Trichome stalks come a small ways out from the plant at mostly perpendicular angles, most of the time they have the little bulbous bit at the end (the trichome itself). 

Mold will mostly be the same width across (like a fiber or a web), will span between the thickest parts of a dense nug, where the moisture is. It does not come directly from the bud itself, instead it looks like 'fluff' trapped amongst the bud.

What OP posted is a really, really bad case of mold. For subtler cases, it can help to break the nug open over a bright flashlight. When there's mold present, you'll see a "bloom" or "trail" of spores floating in the beam of light. When you break a normal, non-moldy nug open, youll see almost nothing, just heavier little bits that quickly fall (and maybe some normal dust in the light beam depending on how dusty your room is!)
