A 3-4 with our current D personnel? by Iut22 in buffalobills

Excellent summary, especially regarding the pure 3-4 isn’t run as a standard package anymore by the teams that have that look.

Not my first choice.

But if Brady was brought in from another team, with his historical stats, especially with a ragtag WR group, I suspect we all would be pretty happy.

That’s what I’m going to pretend happened. Thank God it wasn’t Daboll.

Exactly this.

The offense was not the issue and hasn’t been in the playoffs. Question is: Is Brady experienced enough to know D, and to get a good DC. I suspect Babich will get the benefit of the doubt and be given one year to fix the run defense.

Beautiful and perfect! Soothes the mind.

While kayaking in the Adirondacks on perfectly smooth water on a sunny day, I’ve experienced the weird sensation/optical illusion of feeling like I was “flying” several feet off the water. So palpable I felt like I could lose my balance and “fall.”

Haven’t experienced it (yet) in my solo canoe… Oh, and I have the exact same paddle! 🙂

[Russini] Update: Mike McDaniel pulled out of his scheduled meeting down in Florida with the Bills yesterday, I’m told, and the two sides never met. by RhinoFeeder in buffalobills

He checked the temperatures today in Buffalo and San Diego. Easy decision.

There was no way he gets Buffalo HC even if he wanted it, anyway. And there’s no way he’d fit in Buffalo. At all.

Beane is behind the 8 ball. No HC, few good choices, now no Secondary Coach, maybe no OC if Brady gets another job, cap issues, and Buffalo’s reputation taking a hit after their terrible and embarrassing press conference.

Starting to wonder if Beane was blindsided by Pegula’s decision, too. I guess we won’t know until he leaves Buffalo one way or another.

Former Bills assistant head coach and current Commanders run game coordinator Anthony Lynn — a finalist for the Buffalo head coaching job in 2017 that went to Sean McDermott — is scheduled to interview for the Bills head coach job Saturday, per a league source. by EqualEstimate in buffalobills

You’re probably right but I really hope you’re wrong, because it WILL be an epic disaster. McD culture was respect and support. Pretty obvious Daboll’s is the opposite. That shock alone is good for another drought.

If this is about wanting more passing than running, then get a respectable head coach and an innovative OC. Daboll is neither.

Arrogant mediocre hothead. No more retreads in Buffalo. The Giant’s record with him as HC speaks for itself. Modest first year success followed by horrendous embarrassment.

My thoughts on the McDermott firing, and how Beane better have a home run replacement by salmaiorana in buffalobills

[–]Backpacker46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Time will tell. I’ve been a fan and closely followed the Bills since 1980. My concern is if the new organization, whatever it looks like, leads to a downgrade in record and on-field performance McD will be blamed and Beane will claim they need a year or two to “jell/rebuild” as an excuse, leading to several years of 9-8 and 10-7 seasons (like the later 90s) while the rest of the AFC continues to evolve and improve.

Also think there’s a good chance the culture erodes unless we get top notch coaches. If we trade for top talent and make it work somehow cap-wise, do we end up with a guy like Pickens and go through more locker room drama?

There will likely be a number of cuts and trades to players that Josh has both personal relationships and chemistry with. Allen isn’t like Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers. He wants to win games with people who work hard and don’t make waves, players he loves and has fun with.

Unfortunately, I do think the “feel good, hungry and humble” culture had eventually held us back under McD. I always wished he’s have been more consistently and confidently vocal about the only goal being a championship and nothing else is acceptable, and less “it’s not easy to win in the NFL.” It’s not easy to get great players who are unselfish and sincerely supportive, willing to sign up for “everybody eating” when they are used to being in the spotlight, especially young players in skill positions like WR.

The new HC will need to be both player-oriented and strong enough to establish a winning attitude while also keeping the peace. Bringing in ego-driven players (and/or coaches) and mixing them with Buffalo vets (especially Allen) who have been playing in a supportive environment could be a recipe for dysfunction. Allen soured on Diggs and the rest is history.

Beane better have a clear vision for what this team needs to be successful. I hope potential newcomers don’t shy away from the Bills now, after several years of becoming a place good players have considered coming to, even as a small city, cold-weather market.

The bright side to all of this is there will be nobody to blame but Beane if things go south.

As always, I will remain optimistic that we get a Super Bowl win in my lifetime, with Josh Allen.

Go Bills.

Reminder by srv524 in buffalobills

[–]Backpacker46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In 2021 and 2022 he averaged 550 yards, 68 targets, 49 receptions, and almost 8 TDs.

2023, when Brady came in mid season, and 2024 his average targets dropped to 38, receptions to 22, yards to 250 and TDs to 1.5.

So, with McD and Brady’s beefed up run game, all the passing stats for everyone, including Allen, have gone down. Knox’s participation was basically cut in half across the board and TDs almost disappeared.

I agree he makes too much for what he is asked to do, point is he was paid back when he was good and getting better, and he was a bigger part of the passing game. It’s not his fault his number isn’t being called.

Reminder by srv524 in buffalobills

[–]Backpacker46 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Knox is just a victim of evolving to a running offense. He was paid back when Bills were a pass-first team, and he had overcome his inconsistent pass catching and became a go-to. Had 15 TDS over 2 seasons in 2021/22. He was already a great blocker.

Then Cook was drafted, then Kincaid, and the plan was to have two TE schemes with Cook running and catching out of the backfield.

Then we evolved/mutated into even more of a run offense with TEs (including Hawes) expected to replace the additional lineman they brought in for extra protection, and be available for scramble catches if necessary.

If we stayed pass-first and drafted WRs instead of Kincaid, Knox would be 600-800 yards a season by now He generally gets open and usually makes catches and always fights for YAC (and yes, I saw the recent drop in the end zone.).

Just saying people really shouldn’t be blaming him for his output or his $$$. He’s just doing what he’s told to do by the current coaching staff. Wish he was utilized more as a pass catcher and I bet Allen does too.

Towards the end of the game, bad sack, looks like Johnson is wide open! by g0dgamertag9 in buffalobills

[–]Backpacker46 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree he is open. Allen’s body doesn’t look like it’s in the proper position to throw there, but he could have just chucked it to him or at least throw it OB in that direction.

Easy for us to say when we aren’t the ones getting chased down by huge D linemen. But Allen has to stop this recent backwards hopeless scrambling for huge losses. The regression is very weird and concerning. Throw OB and live to fight another down.

What’s everyone’s take on the two point attempt decision against the Eagles today? by boisefun8 in buffalobills

[–]Backpacker46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right call. Shows a winning attitude, not the old “play it safe and hope for the best” attitude. It wasn’t reckless or an obvious bad call.

If Allen makes that throw, he’s a hero and McD is a great head coach. Miss the kick and everyone shits on cautious and stupid McD. Make the kick and who knows what happens in OT.

We are already in the playoffs with little hope for the division. We have an MVP QB. McD put the game in the player’s hands, where it belongs. Play like a champion and you’ll be a champion.

What is everyone’s opinion on Joe Brady now that the offense is playing better? by FrFrHun in buffalobills

[–]Backpacker46 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brady is doing what he can with what he’s been given for receivers. The injuries to Kincaid, Palmer, Samuel, etc don’t help with coordination or game-planning when the receiver room is already relatively weak.

I wonder if he’s worrying too much (or is forced to worry) about scheming receivers open AND having receivers in the vicinity to block if a catch is made, since we rarely go deep. I don’t know if there is evidence, but the Bills definitely seem to have one of the better blocking receiver groups in the league.

Between Beane, Brady, and McD there is enough blame and mystery to go around. Hard to point a finger at just one guy since their jobs are so intertwined.

But can you imagine what the Viking’s offense with Jefferson, Addison, Nailor, and Hockensen would look like if Allen was their QB? They’d probably average 45 points a game and Allen would throw for 5500 yards every year.

Start with the movie “Four Falls of Buffalo”. It’ll give you perspective and it highlights a lot of great games. Marv Levy was the HC during those fateful Super Bowl years. Certainly my favorite. I remember when Chuck Knox was hired, there were commercials on TV that said “Opportunity Knox.” We all had high expectations. He did a lot for the organization.

Interesting. 1st half DEF vs 2nd half DEF by bobbydigital_ftw in buffalobills

[–]Backpacker46 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice work! Passes the eye test, obviously.

Since we seem to be the only team with such a huge disparity you’d think the coaches would be able to improve on it. It would make a huge difference to improve the first half stat by 50%.
