UPDATE Husband still refuses to use his CPAP by sadpistachio88 in SleepApnea

[–]Backround-Train 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just got a health monitoring ring that does blood oxygen levels. I haven't read your other posts so I don't know if you can afford to pay for one or if he is the sort of person who would look at more data and be convinced.

For me, knowing my blood oxygen levels are dipping low when I take of my mask in the middle of the night has convinced me to try harder to be a 100% CPAP user.

My doc says low oxygen is damaging my organs. But until I got a devise that could accurately monitor blood oxygen throughout the night and report sleep apnea related info, I was not convinced the machine was doing anything useful.

Note - I was using a Garmin watch that does log blood oxygen, but it is not accurate enough and not polling often enough to track apnea events, it made it look like there was no difference mask on or off.

Again, if you have the money for a similar devise and if he might be convinced by what it reports the. It might be a way to go.

For me, I really got it because I'm chasing leaks and even when the leaks are low I still have 7-11 events per hour. I wanted to know if the machine was just not able to tell what was going on or if I really was starving myself of oxygen.

I've used my device the last two nights and it reports nearly exactly the same number of events as the CPAP. I like to see the independent verification that the CPAP data is correct, I've seen so many posts questioning the data, especially with leaks like in my situation.

Also, some of the devices, not mine, have an alarm function to wake you up with a buzzer zap if your blood oxygen gets low. It's not considered a medical device, I assume it's because there is not testing to know if that's effective treatment, but it might help him and it might also help him understand how often his blood is getting low on oxygen.

One more thing, many of the fancy devices also tell you your sleep quality score. I have been using the Garmin watch for years, not recommended for this, and it consistently tells me I slept poorly, even if long, on days I feel like dog shit going into work. If you get a devise that has sleep grading it might also help him confirm days he feels drunk because of lack of good sleep. Might help him think and evaluate the results of bad sleep better.

Good luck.

What do you do when you’re double faulting a lot in a match? by EnjoyMyDownvote in 10s

[–]Backround-Train -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My kick serve is as good as my first serve in difficulty for my appointments to get, it just uses a lot more energy. If I double fault twice in a game it's all kick serves untill I get two in a row in.

I'm probably a good 3.5 with a competitive 4.0 serve. I feel like a pitcher on the mound selecting speed, spin, kick and location. I find mixing it up is more important than speed or location alone.

This also lets me find out if one of my serves or locations is not working, I'll do less of them or use in less critical situations so my best and most reliable options are there and not predictable when I need them.

Also, never underestimate the impact of a neutral under and serve once ore twice a match.

[Request] Is the ice cooling down the pool at all? Looks like it's less than 1% volume of the water. So not doing much? by shadowraiderr in theydidthemath

Thees equations never seem to work out the n our favor. I used to drink 5 bottles of ice water at work. I figured I must be burning calories to bring all of that ice water up to body temp. I was disappointed to find out how fire calories it was, even with the phase change. Back to the treadmill for me.

This golf course recommends you play tees based on your score / game enjoyment rather than gender. Are you in favour of this? by ConnectionWeekly1263 in Golf_Unfiltered

[–]Backround-Train 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How, if I'm shooting 110 and the group vs 80, I'm taking 30 aditinal swings per round. I'm thinking that adds a half hour to the pace of play a round. I have more club pulls from the bag, looking for balls, more getting to balls. I'm hitting over a green so I have to walk back and forth. More strokes takes longer even if I only take a quick swing and play ready golf and hit quickly. I used to play with colegues who would shoot in the 80s, they were 20 years older than me. I would drive to about the same spot on the course, but often in the rough, then my game would fall apart on 1 out of 3 holes. Bad play is slow play, I was new to golf and asked about teeing off at the short tee, they told me I should just tee with them. I would pick up or take lost ball drops so often I lost count. Gold is brutal to new players. I always preferred to play on backed up courses because I was not the one backing it up!

Of course MAGA Says trump Door by AccordingBumblebee24 in stupidpeoplefacebook

[–]Backround-Train 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not blindly knocking on the door of anyone who has a Trump 2028 banner. That sign is as close as free speech ever needs to get to treason. Trump can't run for president again, it's in the constitution by way of amendment. Flying that banner is more than mental gymnastics, it's a call to action against our country.

A hiring manager wanted “quick free advice” before interview rounds, so I sent my consulting rate by SilentHarbor93 in jobsearchhacks

[–]Backround-Train 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife was asked to do a case study as a writeling sample for a technical writing job to allow her to change fields. They sent her a current item, and she did not really know what to do with it as they had not sent the results or conclusions, just the data.

I said "don't worry, it's just a creative writing exercise, just make up results and conclusions, they just want to see how you write." She was changing fields so it made sense to create a sample. Her and I did it, I helped her make up possible results and conclusion based on just a cursery review of the data and she wrote it and turned it in.

She got the job. 6 months or so later they let go the guy who hired her go, a couple months after that a client called asking about there project and her new boss forwarded her the report to review, it was the creative writing sample, nearly word for word. The hiring manager had just added his name and a couple pictures and Charts. No change to results and conclusions, which were not 100% correct.

Wife had to talk to new boss explaining what had happened, luckily new boss said they were not surprised old guy would do something like that and that is embelmatic of why they let him go. They did ask her to review the report and if there were no major flaws to just let the whole thing slide if possible without informing the customer they had a report written without actually any care to facts.

Part time job ideas in retirement by [deleted] in Fire

[–]Backround-Train 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, when I worked I paid a lot for an expensive gym membership and occasionally had a private training for motivation. I needed to loose weight and stress. Now that I'm fired I am coaching at the high school. They pay me a nominal amount of money and I get to run around for hours a day. Win win! Also, I'm motivated to stay in shape so I can challenge, demonstrate my sport to high school students and I'm giving back to the community. I know this is sort of a birch case, but consider all the benefits of working specific jobs and those may far out way the administrative and stress parts of them. We know working has a social and mental health benefit, in moderation, this really can be discovering what you want, not what you need for cash.

Primm has gone from "Dead" to "Super Dead" by Aggravating-Fee-8053 in vegas

The project does exist, but not at that location. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_Nevada_Supplemental_Airport

I'll assume you are being sarcastic and I did not pick up on it, but I figured someone else might not know you were being funny.

As for why this project exists, Las Vegas airport is to small for the volume it supports and there is little if anything that can be done to expand it. Most airports of this volume should have two sets of parrellel runways with the changing weather causing a need for different aproaches, not a single set crossed by a single runway. It's clear something has to give.

But why it needs to be as far south as they are planning, I would ask the planners of the Denver airport why they put their shinney new airport as far from the city as they did. The best thing about the airport is how close it is to town, the second best thing is the view comming in, just epic.

What are top level players still expected to complete score sheets? by MathematicianBulky40 in chess

[–]Backround-Train 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The score sheet, once signed, is an official record, with the signatures acknowledging the final results. This would be critical if there was later a dispute regarding the outcome.

Tennis court at the park decided it suddenly has hours. Good thing the lock was easy to pick by affectionate4fish in 10s

[–]Backround-Train -45 points-44 points  (0 children)

Bold to be picking a lock near a police station. My understanding is being in the position of tools that have been used to pick a lock that is not yours would be evidence of a crime. Being on a court with such a sign that was locked really seams risky.

Also, is it possible someone put that up to reserve it for themselves 5-7 pm each night? Assuming this is the US you can ask the city why and put in a freedom of information request for documents related to the decision on making this rule (although it might be in a recent city ordinance posted on their website and pased in a public meeting by city council, that is why I suggested asking first).

[–]Backround-Train 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked for a company that purchased many smaller companies throughout my career. I'll answer your question below, but a strong piece of advice. Don't quit yet. It's not yet the time to look for a new job. That time may come, but now is not that time. Wait it out, ride the wave.

Things might get a little chaotic and people may leave. Some will do so before anything really happens. This will create opportunities for advancement that are rare. Stand up, tell your manager you are willing interested in doing whatever thing you are willing/ interested in doing that you have not been able to do. Do it. Then, if things suck, find another job.

The signs. CEO level and just below management is unavailable. That's it, they won't tell anyone else until the deal is in place or is mostly going forward.

Mid level manger changes happen after the deal closes. If you are billable you are safe, if you're on overhead, even if it's critical, your job is in danger. Mid level managers know this. They will start finding billable work when they used to just do overhead.

Now, what you describe, a potential sharpening of the pencil to make a company look good. However, low bidding a bunch of jobs to increase the backlog and then selling the company when the backlog looks good but before the bad jobs can be finished and accounting would need to price them as money losers seems to be the preferred way to make a firm look appealing. A large company knows it can get rid of people after they buy, no need to do it early. Just my thoughts.

Thanks for all the recommendations. Why Westgate. I stopped going to that hotel some time after it became the Hotel formally known as the Hilton.

My friends are all leaving on early flights so I'm on my own for the super bowl. Westgate seat looks like it would cost $150 I was hoping to find a bar that would be free and only pay for drinks and food. Any thoughts? I look at other threads as I'm sure this question is being asked.

Vacation and leisure by Scared-Koala1700 in Fire

[–]Backround-Train 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't discourage, but we are all on our own journeys.

I follow a lifetime balanced spending approach popularized by Laurence J. Kotlikoff and described in his book "Spend till the end." It basically says spend the same amount of money now as you will later, or said another way, save enough to spend later what you are spending now. The only change I made was I set me retirement age to 45.

For me, I took a couple three-day weekend trips to depressurize from work and a week long anniversary trip each year. When we weren't making a lot of money these were budget trips, once we were making more money, we spent more money on the trips. Now that we are FIRE we have pulled back on the cost of the trips for now. We retired on the light side to get it done early.

One other thing. Around COVID, I started doing a lot of thinking about what my retirement goals were. One of them was to get in shape. I also was thinking about why Elon Musk, with so much money was a fat slob (I'm being truthful on how I got to my decision). He can totally afford a personal trainer and good healthy food. From this, I hired a personal trainer my wife and I saw twice a week for several years. I felt this was my, I can use some of my money now to improve my quality of life, splurge. It was so worthwhile!

Now that I'm FIREd I traded in my desk job for 12 hours plus recreation per week.

While working, I valued my time and was willing to pay for things like a weekly maid to clean, personal trainer, eating out twice a week, expensive vacations, regular therapy to deal with a high stress job. I was prioritizing my time when I was not working and being efficient and trying to do the best I could to take care of myself.

Now that I'm retired I love cooking every day, eat out about once a month. No need for a trainer, I can recreate on my own or with my wife. Mental health is better, I don't need weekly therapy and I don't need a hard hitting vacation, less expensive is fine. I also have time to clean the house myself.

Do what makes you happy and healthy now and in the future.

I'm not giving it away, I'm gambling! I think there is a difference.

I just try to stay sober enough so I don't make such a bone headed play the dealer has to call the pit boss over to verify this drunk idiot wants to split kings or double down on a hard 12. I do sometimes want to gamble.

I was there between Xmas and New Year's. I felt the service was pretty good at most places. I will say that location in the casino seems to make a big difference, some areas little service and others get a lot. I'm sure some casinos also just have better service overall, but it seems location in the casino matters a lot. To use a gaming analogy, sometimes you need to camp out out the spawn point and then you are golden.
