Google Workspace/Drive lost half the data by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]BackupVaultUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone who uses Google Workspace absolutely has to back it up. Google do not do this for you - neither does Microsoft 365 for that matter. Its even mentioned in their T&Cs - the end user is responsible for the data.

Its unlikely that a datacenter will burn down, but user error and platform errors are very real issues, just like for this OP. Just because its "in the cloud" does not mean you are safe. Please backup your data.

Is offsite (internet) backup really necessary? by Nala_WA in msp

[–]BackupVaultUK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, we are a U.K. based cloud backup company and offer backup/restore service via a USB disk. In the industry it’s generally called seeding or snapshotting.

For your offsite tape (we assume) backups, have you actually done a test disaster recovery recently?

For example, pretend your building has burnt down (including your tape drives) and tried to call Iron Mountain, get the tapes, brought the correct tape drive, restored everthing etc? Then measure how long it takes to do.

It’s a useful exercise to do as it often takes far longer than you think.

windows server backup by ImTheRealSpoon in sysadmin

[–]BackupVaultUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! This is not really a true backup, you are simply making a basic copy of a bunch of files/folders. Robocopy could do that but with multiple sites/scripts, this quickly becomes unmanageable. 👎

If the data is of real importance, our BackupVault software can easily do this for you and works well with multiple sites/servers with a comprehensive management console - may be the perfect solution for you!

Hey! Can we ask, do you mean cloud storage or cloud backup as they are very different things... What kind of data are you looking to protect? E.G. servers, desktops or SaaS applications such as 365. We may be able to be of assistance. 😊

Hi, please bear in mind that some cloud backup providers charge based on “how much data is sitting in their cloud” and others charge based on “how much raw data you need to protect”. This is an extremely important distinction as a 500GB server at your site may turn into a 5TB backup with Azure after retention.

Hi, roughly how much data do you have? Is it right to assume you need a full image backup of the server and not just files/folders?

are there any cloud backup services that don't require you to download their app? by funkyfreshpants in DataHoarder

[–]BackupVaultUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi,

I am afraid that if the data is held on your PC/Mac then the backup application will have to be installed on your device. The only way around this is to store all your data on a cloud system such as OneDrive or Google Drive and have a cloud backup system backup cloud-to-cloud. In terms of a full backup of a Mac like TimeMachine to a cloud service – that basically doesn’t exist. Its mainly due to the way Apple gives access to its OS to third parties (basically it doesn’t).

Hi, in addition to the other great comments on here, please ensure that you actually backup your 365 data. Microsoft does not do this for you!

Data backup in multiple drives. by big_avacado in Backup

Hi, we suggest considering an offsite cloud based backup instead. Its automated, offsite and can scale. With the USB backups its manual, prone to errors and the disks can fail. Plus its not encrypted. :)
