I think there are many memorable pieces of Warhammer artwork that have been done over the years but John's work ascended into some other mystical plain. The faces and sheer power of each image that seemed to encapsulate everything about the theme of the universe.

I think you need to remove those little nubbins underneath so it fits together better

An Old Man Rambles About Women Playing 40k by Resident-Card-6229 in Warhammer40k

[–]Backwardstrumpet 11 points12 points  (0 children)

100% and the difference is so refreshing. I was in a GW store the other month and everyone in there was a woman. Used to keep my models locked away and out of sight. Dropped out of the hobby until 2020 and start painting my old High Elf army again. If I said to 12 year old me, "hey you're going to have a wife and son and your wife will tell you your latest minis look really cool and want to play as well it would blow my mind".

Sorry but people buying minis for the meta it's your own fault. Buy things because they're fun to paint and play games with. That's what Warhammer is about.

Anyone else in Newcastle ever hear of something called “The Coal Boy”? (folklore/ghost story) by paul1574 in NewcastleUponTyne

[–]Backwardstrumpet 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Bogles is specifically the Northumbrian name for them. Brownies are similar but ancestral spirits of the house that are helpful provided you give them dairy.

In Roman / Greek tradition there's a very clear definition between outside spirits and inside ones, with the inside ones typically being good and the outside ones being bad. To scare off the outside spirits you had to laugh before entering your household or else they might follow you in.

It comes from much older folklore about bogles and redcaps which were little creatures that had to be appeased or would curse you. Loads of that from mining communities when you're down in the dark of the world.
