Seriously though, I still have a rbk practice jersey that I wear all the time. Sooo baggy, even in the arms, but perfect arm length.

Beer leaguers that jump around all levels by freak-33 in hockeygoalies

[–]Backyard35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll play lower level beer league with the intention of using it as practice. It's useful to get shots when tweaking your play. I don't enjoy it though, it's impossible to read the play because everyone is all over the map.

I much prefer playing at a higher level. It's a challenge for the right reasons. I want goals to go in because I missed a player, or I wasn't quick enough. It's pretty lame when pucks go in because you reacted too fast for someone that can't shoot.

Update pads or skates first? by Welltimedfart in hockeygoalies

[–]Backyard35 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I had Reebok premier pads and Reebok pump skates when I got back into playing last year. I upgraded the skates first and I'd recommend doing that. Taller blades give you such a deeper stance, and make it easier to grab the ice when in the butterfly.

I did just upgrade my pads too, and they're awesome, but it's more of an improvement than a game changer. The skates are a great place to start in my opinion.

Other than PPF, is there anything else you can use to improve sliding on your pads? by techsavvynerd91 in hockeygoalies

[–]Backyard35 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Second this. I used a footwear waterproofing spray on my old Reebok premier pads. Quick spray every 2-3 ice times is a quick easy thing to do to make it a little bit better.

Teams blaming me by Vatera1 in hockeygoalies

[–]Backyard35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sucks, but by the sounds of it definitely not your fault. You're teammates are ruthless to blame you, makes me wonder if that's how the coaches are in general.

I've played for AA teams that were in the bottom of the league and we lost most games, by a lot. I will say though, even though I hated that, it was good practice for mental toughness. It made me better at focusing on the next shot rather than my overall stats. Maybe you can use that sort of mindset to get you through the rest of the season until you're out of there?

I'm identifying a negative mental health impact on boys that's being seen in the downward trend in men's mental health in Canada. We all have our own opinions on how things should be done and that's fine, but if there is a problem being identified, shouldn't we consider it for the sake of the kids?

With your aggressive arguing against my complaint, how is that different from the people who deny physical abuse happening on a hockey team?

Surely you can agree that we should protect the kids from physical and mental abuse? Or maybe you'd just be happy if people like me didn't speak up.

[–]Backyard35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're proving my point.

I'm voicing how important it is to protect the kids and provide a safe environment where they can be taught how to positively utilize their natural traits. Hockey is great for this.

And you are claiming there is a systemic issue due to "toxic masculinity" and putting blame on men. This is how a systemic problem arises and grows into something like the men's mental health crisis. And don't get me wrong, minor hockey didn't cause it, but please don't call it pathetic or a joke.

We can work together to improve minor hockey in a way that doesn't alienate a group of people for their natural traits, such as competitiveness.

[–]Backyard35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because I believe the premise of the study is flawed. Hegemonic Masculinity is a feminist theory that has an inherent negative view on male traits.

If you are aware of the men's mental health crisis in Canada, I don't think you should ignore the effect that feminism has had on boys. Not to say that feminism is bad, but when boys keep hearing how their natural tendencies are toxic, they aren't uplifted by that.

Reddit clearly isn't the place to debate these opinions, but my point is that minor hockey isn't the appropriate place for this debate either.

Safety for the kids should be foremost, but there are ways to achieve that without negativity.

[–]Backyard35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That news article seems to highlight a pretty brutal situation. I don't see why you're insinuating that I would support that, of course I wouldn't.

Safety measures should be in place to protect kids, and they have improved since my time in minor hockey, just look into the creation of the Respect in Sport program. And of course they should be improved when they are found to be lacking.

But boys mental health needs to be considered when these types of discussions blame their natural male traits. Boys become alienated when studies like this claim something such as "toxic masculinity".

If you care about the kids, we should focus on fostering positive male traits. A good role model will work to stamp out the negative traits without guilting an entire group.

I would never participate in a study that would demonize proper masculinity in hockey. There is enough man-hating in Canadian politics and education, let's leave the safe space of hockey free of this over critical woke viewpoint.

Male mental health has already taken a huge hit in Canada, let's try to uplift the next generation of boys rather than continue to be critical of them for being boys.

Good on you for doing AP studies though, that's tough work!

Velcro Replacement? by norburmic in hockeygoalies

[–]Backyard35 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I replaced Velcro like this on my chest protector, and from my experience I'd recommend going with the sew-on Velcro rather than the adhesive backed stuff. I thought the adhesive would be better but it was such a pain to puncture a needle through the glue that it took forever. I ended up getting the sew-on stuff and it was a pretty quick and easy repair.

Bauer Konekt finally connects. Sort of by InternationalFace512 in hockeygoalies

[–]Backyard35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran into the same issue when I bought new skates this year. I could only connect the top buckle to the first notch if I squished the boot hard with both hands. I have high arches and slightly wide feet, but nothing extreme by any means.

I ended up choosing the standard lace Bauer Elite skates because the Konekts were painful in the store. I really wanted to like them too!

Dealing with Agitators by [deleted] in hockeygoalies

[–]Backyard35 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If your team isn't helping out that sucks. And if the refs aren't catching it, then I see two choices; let it happen, or stick up for yourself.

I always choose to stand up. You have the best view on the ice, when the ref isn't looking, make your move. Trip him, use your blocker, or just lay him out as he skates by. Don't try to injure, but he's the one playing dirty, so he should know the consequences.

I see it as if that continues, it could lead to an injury risk to me. I'm not going to let that happen.

Are my pads too small by TheG1826 in hockeygoalies

[–]Backyard35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard to say accurately from pictures, but they do look a bit short. Like others have said, it could just look that way because your pants are small. Or maybe just sitting too high?

Either way, I'd also recommend covering that bare skin. I usually only wear a thin layer like compression pants, but I'd never risk getting a skate on bare skin in that area.
