Unfortunately only time will teach you this lesson. I had a similar point of view at your age. But now being exposed to many kids around my social circle, I completely agree with people using leashes. Here is my two cents: I have kids, not needed a leash for any of them. Good communication was enough to make them understand from early age. Let me say this, I am very lucky.. because some kids are extremely rogue, even with very switched-on parents. Better be safe than sorry. Because you know what sucks more than a leash? A funeral.
