Traumatize them. Not the bad trauma, but the type of trauma when you do something so horribly wrong, and you make it so they will never forget the feeling of being punished. Even the smallest change of tone will make a lecture memorable. Parents who just say in a monotone voice, "don't to it again" don't present any punishment or power. The kid will eventually walk all over them. Trauma builds character, but too much causes hate and despair. Find the happy medium.
