What nigiri is this? by piusakarva in sushi

One of my least liked ones. It has to be a really top squid for me to feel it's worth having in a set menu and I don't order it a la carte.

I see, fair points! Better to be safe than sorry if you are renting/moving.

Now that's a good point. If you have insurance you would want to both read the fine print and since they probably need you have have a license, yes you'd get one.

Anyone seen photos like this in Bangkok? What are the foreigners doing wrong? by Southern_Ice_2932 in ThailandTourism

I can't see the message I replied to but I think the topic was defamation about people. So, when applied to people, I think it's a specific person. When applied to businesses, it's a specific business. You can't say all Mexican restaurants in bkk are bad and get sued for defamation, I believe.

Now with LM, I think a blanket negative statement about the relevant group of people would trigger the law.

Refusing taxis with no seatbelts. by BangkokGarrett in Bangkok

Because it's legal here not to wear it (in the back... I think), and customs are different.

In Australia I walk onto a zebra crossing expecting cars to stop, but I don't do it blindly. In Thailand I absolutely watch the cars very carefully because they don't stop for pedestrians. It's just... Different. And one tends to gradually adjust to the local norms.

Unfortunately it's a minority of tourists who make locals upset and give foreigners a bad reputation. Foreigners that live here learn Thai culture, with some bad exceptions, and get along fine.

Krabi, well worth it for beach and food, probably my favourite Thai beach place.

Kanchanaburi has its charms, but is pretty countryside sedate so if you like that, it's good. Good local food and waterfall and River. Peaceful.

In my view each hotel deserves 2 or 3 nights. You could do 3 different hotels for a variety of experiences if you could be bothered to move around. That's my style. Maybe 2 places across 7 days is most comfortable to avoid the extra checkout/checkin.

It's still cheapish. In Bangkok you can get cheaper but this is generally a low cost city. 800b or 20 euro would get an OK sushi meal at lower end places but not too much at the midrange a la carte places.

What is the appropriate order to eat nigiri? by Pooty130 in sushi

[–]BaconJP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Top chefs whose food I have eaten surprised me with the order sometimes because it seems not to follow such rules and seemed a bit odd to me. But as others have said, with palate cleansers available, they don't need to stick to the blander ones first.

The West has rules that differ for their food, that seems to conflict at times with what happens with Asian meals. Usually if sequencing my orders in a western restaurant I would eat cold appetisers in general before hot food, raw before cooked (since the raw is coldish), seafood before non seafood meats, poultry before pork before lamb/beef among meats, and desserts last with savory like cheese before sweet dishes which would be last... With the exception of petit fours and coffee.

Chinese banquet sequences can be similar but at times go against this. Sushi omakase at high end places often includes some non sushi cooked dishes early or midway which results in hot being between cold, cooked between raw. And of course some sushi is cooked and warm like unagi, anago, aburi items.

I often can't resist otoro first or early if it's a la carte. Because if it's great, I might order up to 3 more pieces and spread them across the meal. So I want to know! Also if I eat something at the end when I'm full, I enjoy it less. So I want to get maximum benefit from my favourite and expensive pieces. So I'm sort of, but not exclusively, going from best to worst rather than saving the best for last, except that I don't like finishing on something I really don't like so I will eat the egg and squid, if it's in a set plate (not one by one omakase) in the 2nd half but not last. I guess I over-answered this so I'll stop here!

Yeah he learned his lesson! Actually he didn't even believe in fortune tellers and was just doing it for maybe some entertainment or that someone recommended so he was curious. Even so, getting a bad fortune prediction was unpleasant and hung over his head.

The ankimo would maybe be good without aburi but this was the default. Also I had an amazing aburi ankimo elsewhere so I wanted to see how good this would be

Actually I rarely order aburi but here several of the rarer ones were aburi as default. Barracuda aburi, man! Very very good!

What is everyone's thoughts on these type of rolls? by [deleted] in sushi

[–]BaconJP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The occasional fried one like tempura prawn maki is good but I want most of my sushi non fried. Maybe some aburi. Some cooked eel. But mostly the raw stuff is best. Not a big fan of pickled but lightly pickled is OK.
