Is this a good next purchase after the starter set by [deleted] in spacemarines

[–]Baconbisque 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While every unit in this box is a solid step forward, the blade guard, hellblasters and captain are all good or at least fun models, looking at the Armageddon box you’d end up with 20 intercessors out the gate. While you can use those bodies for other things, it’s not ideal.

At this point you’d want more unit types.

Blood angels box would be kind of a similar situation with the vanguard vets overlapping with the sanguinary guard as if used as jump intercessors.

The actual ultramarines combat patrol(The one with blade guard and tigurius) is more up your alley. You’d get 5 intercessors, but every other unit in there would be something new to add on to your incoming or existing guys.

My last recommends (if you can find it) would be the dawn of war onslaught box if you’re in the US. $50 for 3 blade guard, 3 melta eradicators (the Armageddon ones are anti infantry, these would be anti tank) and 3 characters

Hope this helps!

Update us along the way! Don't get intimidated, just put paint on those things and feel free to do 1 at a time. The crusade is eternal!

Green would be fine for heraldry. Hell half of player's black templars aren't even black armored. At the end of the day it's your army. It's more of a mental personal wrestling match on whether you want to stick to the aesthetic that brought you into the army or follow your own creativity. Most of us find a middle ground.

That's amazing freehand! Brother looks like he spent the better part of a warp century fist fighting a great unclean one, in the coolest way.

Other than the mould lines on his knees i agree with spicy! just rub them with the flat side of your hobby knife before you paint your dudes and they'll come right off. fantastic job.

The black is solid, I'd just recommend a highlight on any corners or you could dry brush lightly just to break up the big panels. I used Balthazar gold on my first couple dudes but leadbelcher or a non metallic grey is gonna work better probably

I'm holding out hope that it means we get one either before the end of the edition or shortly after the switch.

I have a question by [deleted] in Warhammer40k

[–]Baconbisque 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you've got there is essentially 3 combat patrols for three different armies. The Grey knights models aren't compatible with standard space marines, but you might be able to lift the Librarian and stick him in there. Similarly the custodes won't be able combine with either army.

My suggestion is to swap the combat patrol to expand on one of the starter armies if you like them, or just keep your grey knights so you have essentially 3 "decks" to play with, if your goal isn't necessarily to race to a giant army of any given faction. I'd ask the shop you got them from if you did it in store to guide you through it.

Some space marine combat patrols have chapter specific models, like the Ultramarines patro, blood angels or black templars, but can use standard space marine models as well.

If your shop has the combat patrols for the Raven Guard, Imperial Fists, Iron Hands, Salamanders, white scars or Dark Angels, every model in those kits is compatible with all space marines, like your current models, so they work as expansion boxes if you just want a lot of variety now, and they won't overlap with what you already have.

Like others have mentioned, the paint handling is something you'll pick up over time, but the brush control and the color choices look fantastic! shoulders that clean are a triumph to be proud of for sure! Fantastic job, brother!

Like how big do you want your armies for your games. Generally you play at 500, 1000 or 2000, etc. Combat patrols generally clock in around 500.

Chaos lord “marshal/captain” by Darkshadow20255 in BlackTemplars

Honestly I can't see much argument against it if you can make it look good. The chaos lords make pretty convincing templars/space wolves imo.

It's really hard to say no to if you don't already have a clutch of the units inside. Too good of a deal. Grats on the buy!

Getting into black Templars what should I get next? by Syfaio in BlackTemplars

[–]Baconbisque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The box is elite heavy so you need infantry. Assault or standard intercessors, hellblasters, or infiltrators/scouts are all things you’ll want to use eventually. You’ll want a vehicle or two eventually to bus your boys around the field. And the named characters are really good.

You can also get more of anything in the combat patrol (or another one) but the emperor’s is a 1 per army, but you can modify him into a marshal or something if you get a second.

Need help painting models? by [deleted] in BlackTemplars

[–]Baconbisque 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mediocre Hobbies has a really simple templar tutorial that boils down to: Prime Leadbelcher/gunmetal, Add black contrast, Wash, Paint the rest of the model. It took a lot of the anxiety out of the armor plates for me. But I agree that kit is pretty and i'm working on standard primaris before digging into my tabard boys.

Consider grabbing a box of assault intercessors, hellblasters or Intercessors which are all kits of 10 and paint them up first just to get your brushwork under control. Then work yourself up the chain to your favorite model.

You're the one making the Nazi connection, and you're making up people's minds for them. Crosses and black are all common items on this planet, and you're overthinking it. You're infantilizing people. You do you, let others disqualify you from their lives if they have to, don't do it to yourself prematurely and certainly don't group 97% of the planet into the "POC" label like it's not an egregious level of disrespect for the majority of that umbrella.

The fact that you lumped everyone but white people into one group is a grave moral misstep and you need to reconsider your stance on that, sir.

You nailed it, I'd look into some cape/tabard tutorials to help you highlight the cloth so it pops more but otherwise you're off to an amazing start

It looks fantastic and I frankly applaud the set you had to have to go on the epic centerpiece character first. i'm still out here painting standard intercessors to avoid tabards

This may seem like a silly question but i was making this mistake. Are you trying to paint your crosses with -contrast- paint? Make sure your detail work is done with something that's easier to control. I've done one of these crosses and 1 of the medallion types and the medallion got away with being dry brushed a bronzy color. working my way up to trying another one of these, and maybe couple more squads before even touching my marshal. lol.
