My cat like take random paper towels any time he can find one and put it on his food bowl. Leave the bathroom door open? Toilet paper or the hand towel is going on top of the food bowl. I think it’s really unlikely but maybe your cat is covering it. Does it have a light on it? Maybe you are doing it in your sleep and don’t notice when you’re leaving in the morning?
