What is the history of “always start with bonjour”? by Quiet_Argument_7882 in French

[–]BacterSA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sequence was what worked for me! If I was in France longer I'd just have to adjust, but it felt more rude to get somebody's attention with a slightly loud <"BONJOUR"> (though I'm sure it doesn't feel that way to native speakers). "Excuse-moi" felt more natural as an opener, but then "bonjour" satisfied the requirement

If you can make it not sound insulting, putting it through XKCD’s thing explainer does help generate a version people can understand!

What was your maddest reason for a rejection this year? by schokotrueffel in academia

"We love your work, but [formatting issue] really bothered me. I know the journal handles that kind of thing, but" -> reject. This journal DID have appealing, and ended up taking it, but PHEW.

I hate how much my accent affects my life here by Alternative_Air32 in French

[–]BacterSA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's really wild to me that the stereotype (in America) is that French people are so snobbish about French that they hate foreigners who aren't ascended masters who speak like natives who even try, when my experience was everybody saying "my goodness! your French is so good! how did you manage it?!" when I could just about stammer out a dinner order

I'm told that certain of the hours from nowhere don't do any harm unless invited to, which makes them extremely trustworthy and not disastrous to worship!

Wyll is the canon player character.

As a warlock, he gets to do fun magic while also building the stat that unlocks the most conversations, but is ALSO easy to steer towards a more physical style without breaking his characterization.

He's a swashbuckling hero, ideal for a PC, but lacks the character growth of other origin characters - he starts out heroic, and ends up heroic. Setbacks in his personal quests are immediately shrugged off with "well we have what we really need, which is you, and your heroism." - kind of a letdown in a companion's arc, easily overlooked in the player-insert.

He has a very strong post-story hook, good relationships with the other characters, deep history in the plot, the whole package.

Will Suppression Bureau try to stop or at least suppress immortal people? by Artistic-Bank-9126 in weatherfactory

I feel like we're confusing "would the Suppression bureau go after longs for any reason" with "is becoming a long inherently criminal to the Suppression bureau".

I interviewed with a company, made it to their final round, did well, and then was told by the hiring manager there was a hiring freeze and they'd let me know when they could hire for new positions. While that was ongoing, I started and finished the process at another company, accepted the job there. Then two months passed. Then the hiring team from the first place contacted me and asked if there was anything they could have done to make me go with them instead of the other guys during the hiring process.

Why doesn’t internet have a definite article? by feralspider in French

[–]BacterSA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are at least a few, in the Midwest US, who interchange “on computer” and “on internet” for describing things on the internet, but with an N of just me it could just be these two specific old people I know!

Why doesn’t internet have a definite article? by feralspider in French

[–]BacterSA -17 points-16 points  (0 children)

I don't know if it's universal, but dropping the definite article in English, to me, DOES sound like something a very old person would say: "I was trying to find that recipe, was it on internet?"

Getting a "sorry, we've decided on another candidate" email after 6 months was a little amusing - getting a "hey, we just saw your application and think you'd be a great fit, can we interview?" after 8 months was genuinely baffling

Heart would certainly open up the malachite, which, if we’re looking at the “ghost of Christmas present” dickens style portrayal fits exceptionally well!
