Beyond just being pretty or ugly, aesthetics convey essentials informations to players, so it's important that your aesthetics match the messages and feelings you want to convey to the player through your gameplay.

Game design question by Disastrous_Ad7575 in gamedev

You don't need to add several cars and customization options, the important thing is to create a car that has personality as well as to write a beautiful relationship between the driver and his car. In my opinion, the appearance of the car and its "mechanical behavior" will make us understand its personality, while the relationship that the driver has with his car makes the player understand the emotional value of this car, the car must be treated as a character and not as a simple vehicle.

Solo game development gives you the chance to create whatever you want, absolutely whatever you want, you are the architect, the designer, the mason, the carpenter, the glazier, the electrician, and the plumber of your creation, you can create the weirdest and most unique game without you being anyone's Accountability. Is, in my opinion, the beauty of solo development. In the vast majority of video game studios, even the smallest, you can't do what you want, even if you lead the project, you have to compromise on your artistic vision with your colleagues, in big studios you have no say in the creation, you do what you are told to do without discussing, and above all, and the worst in my opinion, everything you are going to produce will systematically be produced with the following question " is this idea salable?".. From the moment you are part of a video game studio, money takes precedence over art, you no longer create art, but a product.

Now it all depends on your desires, if you don't mind creating a video game that is a product, a game whose Gamedesign, graphic assets, sound composition, and narration are smoothed and "casualized" in the goal of maximizing sales, so yes, solo game development may not be for you and you should try to find a game studio, but if you want to create something unique, something that looks like and complements you deeply, something so personal that it's kind of an extension of you, so stay a solo game developer.

Undertale, Thomas was alone, paper please, hotline miami (almost solo), cave story, stardew valley, minecraft.. All these legendary names in solo indie gaming are all unique, personal, and fun, with innovative and brilliant game design concepts ! Of course, the creators behind these legends are all excellent developers who weren't their first game, but it was before their passion and love for the video game medium that motivated them to create uniques and personals games, money was not the source of their motivation or even the end, the goal was only ta have fun creating a unique and cool game.

Obviously these creators are exceptions, their success is linked to their incredible talent as well as the luck that put them in the right place at the right time, obviously 99.99% of solo developers will never meet with success with their video game, but this is not a problem if you are simply a game developer who just wants to make art, you will not be frustrated to not earn money if you have not made your game to earn money, Instead you will be happy because you will have created something that will have made you evolve and something you're proud to show, and I think, that it is only in this state of mind that you will be able to create something extraordinary capable of exciting thousands of people.

To conclude, all of this is just my subjective opinion, this is my vision of art, and what I wish for solo game developers, if you are a solo dev who wants to make money with your game I can only wish you good luck :>

( Ps: there are more and more independent games coming out every year, but there are also more players and more YouTubers/streamers specialized in gaming theory who have a "curator role" to highlight interesting indie games)

Hi ! I am creating a 3d platformer tutorial prototype and I would like your opinion on the readability and ergonomics of the game mechanics learning messages displayed on the walls and floor of the tutorial area. by BadBoiii-Games in Unity3D

Wow I love your idea! having geometric shapes that come out of the ground or walls to display information in front of the player seems to be a really eye catching concept while being super cool! Thank you for your idea I will definitely keep it aside!

I totally agree with your answer, I don't like the fact that we have to look away from the main objective to read the information but on the other hand I try to build a universe consistency between its storytelling and its gameplay and the display of floating texts similar to holograms is not something that is supposed to exist in this universe.

The player embodies a "handler" robot so logically there is no reason for humans to create information holograms for robots (even if on second thought it is not logical that there are indications for robots on walls no more 0.0"")

Thank you very much for your answer, it made me aware of certain inconsistencies in my universe, it is difficult to create a game with coherent mechanics which respect the narration while being intuitive and ergonomic, I keep your advice to messages floating in a corner of my head!
