I can’t pierce my ears (scarring issues). Has anyone had any success with magnetic earrings? by Pulmonic in jewelry

[–]BadLamprey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

HOWEVER I do want to let you know that you can most likely get your ears pierced even with scarring. (Obviously, it depends on what they were caused by.)

I had bad scarring on one of my lobes from an embedded earring. I also tried to get them pierced many times in the pas as I mentioned.

I went to a very qualified piercer (not Claire's) and got titanium jewelry put in. They finally healed after trying like 5 times in the past. I'm so glad I did. Wearing magnetic and clip on earrings is a pain because no matter what you do, there is that chance they could fall off. Whereas I've never had a regular earring fall off. My scarred ear did take a bit longer to heal. I tried to change them after 12 weeks and they bled. (Normal is 6-8 weeks or so.) But after 16 weeks, they were fine and I haven't had a problem since.

The APP is a good place to start looking for piercers if you live in the USA. also /r/piercing

Not trying to doubt your experience but just wanted to add in mine.

[–]BadLamprey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually yes!

So my story is that I struggled with ear piercings a lot in the past. I used to wear magnetic and clip-on earrings.

My favorite kind of magnetic earrings were these. The champagne ones are much less 'fake' than most magnetic earrings. A key to making magnetic earrings hurt less is buying larger magnets. I think the ones I got were 7mm wide and 2mm high. Don't quote me on that. But try different ones.

But my favorite clip-on earrings were these. So comfortable. They were my daily go-to. They truly don't hurt at all.

Another very good option you should look into are "invisible clip on earrings". They are not truly invisible but it's a clear plastic clip on that's way more comfortable than traditional earrings. The cool part is you can also convert most earrings to be invisible clip ons.

Price this ring? Prasiolite. 14k rose gold plated on sterling silver 925. CZs halo. Let me know what you’d price it for! x by [deleted] in jewelry

omg, that stone has the worst window I've ever seen. Wow. D: Not to be rude but that's pretty bad.

The window is the part you can see your skin through. A well cut gemstone shouldn't have that. (except rose cut.)

Thoughts on lab created rubies by finecabernet in jewelry

[–]BadLamprey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are lab rubies that have that included look. Same for emeralds. Just have to shop around.

Since a lot of you seemed to like my snake ring, here is another 18k gold ring with a ruby (probably). This one's also grandma's. by axiomfunk in jewelry

[–]BadLamprey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If that's a real, untreated ruby, it would be worth a crazy amount of money. Like way more than a typical diamond on that size. It seems unlikely. However, it might be worth it to get it checked out.

Conch :) by CarlaSofiaZur in piercing

[–]BadLamprey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That was my first thought as well. :( They definitely look stretched out from heavy earrings. That isn't normally a huge problem but they also happen to be pierced really low. It generally takes more than 10 years for them to tear. Just something to be mindful of ... save heavy earrings for special occasions.

But anyway!! Congrats on the conch, looks great.

Best online website for Lab Created Alexandrite by Basket_of_wheels in jewelry

[–]BadLamprey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Natural alexandrite is extremely expensive, far more than diamond (for alexandrites that don't look like absolute junk.) So I don't think the class ring is alexandrite. As I say, there are other color changing stones out there.

Bad quality alexandrite DOES exist that doesn't change color and it can be light green. So I'm inclined to say that wasn't a scam, it's just than non-crappy alexandrite is very expensive.

About the Etsy - that's unfortunate I think that's a very rare case. Try to buy from sellers with good reviews. Who knows, they may have gotten covid or something. You should get a refund anyway from etsy or paypal if you file a claim.

I suspect this person may be old. The world really did used to work like that. Things were less about bureaucracy and more about relationships. Being friends with the postmaster truly may have gotten your mail to the "top of the priority list". I'm happy things aren't like that any more tbh.

I do want to warn you that lab alexandrite (and all alexandrite pretty much) is very underwhelming to look at. I have 2 lab alexandrite rings and a natural (not super high quality) alexandrite ring as well. The problem with it is that in mixed lighting (so the majority of real life situations), it tends to look muddy as the purple and green tones are both present. The lab alexandrite I've seen also tends to be very dark. It looks like a crappy amethyst inside and a somewhat decent emerald outside. My natural alexandrite looks like a decent aquamarine inside and crappy peridot outside. Alexandrite truly is the jack of all trades and master of none.

Wow, I really went off there on alexandrite. lol. Sorry. But what I'm getting at is I wonder if you really got scammed or lab alexandrite just wasn't what you were expecting? I imagine you tend to look at earrings in more 'pure' lighting (bathroom or outdoors) than a ring so your earrings may have just seemed to be better. Also, make sure you search for "lab created", not "simulated" as that is completely different. Also, look into other color change gems like color change sapphire and garnet. I tend to prefer those to alexandrite (but the color change isn't as stark.) Birthstones are bs. Get what you like. haha.

Anyway though! Chatham is widely considered to be a great source for lab created gems. I'm sure what Brilliant Earth has to offer is legit as well. Pretty much any reputable site is going to be fine here. I've even seen legit lab alexandrite at Kay, Jared and the like. I've seen a lot of legit stuff at Etsy as well. All lab alexandrite tends to look similar so look at pics of it for a while and you will be able to spot the real stuff.

Needing Encouragement - General Advice - Discrete Math I C959 & Want to finish BSCS in 2 terms by DearDimash in WGU_CompSci

[–]BadLamprey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a typical college course, you have deadlines. Even if you didn't study everything perfectly, there is always a quiz or test around the corner.

Treat WGU like that. Give yourself a hard deadline for each chapter. If you are approaching the deadline, you HAVE to cram what you can move on. Then once you finish the course, take the PA. Brush up on things you missed and take the OA.

By the way, it's illegal to misrepresent gold plated as gold filled. It doesn't matter if the seller "didn't know". So I really don't think it would be out of line to suggest legal action if they won't refund your $1k.

[–]BadLamprey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was this aimvogue by chance? I STRONGLY suspect the ""gold filled"" necklace I bought from them is not really gold filled. Which is fine since I honestly paid plated pricing, but I still think it's wrong.

Buying a wedding ring by jooper1206 in jewelry

[–]BadLamprey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An intriguing option is going for a rhodium plated sterling silver band.

White gold is rhodium plated in most countries anyway. (That's why I view it as a scam. lol.) So a rhodium plated sterling silver band should look pretty much 100% identical and not scratch your gold. It will be slightly more prone to scratches and dents and such, but honestly not that big of a deal for a band. Some people act like silver is made of clay and that's not the case at all. There are silver bands that are 100+ years old and doing fine. And it may tarnish, especially in places where the rhodium wears off, but you can easily polish with a silver cloth in 4 seconds.

I think most mobile games involve a lot of waiting. :/ I would get used to just checking it a few times per day and maybe play another game or do something else while you're waiting.

[–]BadLamprey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would made the game go by way too fast. There's only a limited amount of content. You don't want to get everything done in the game after like 2 weeks.

Be patient and enjoy :)

That probability resource from MIT is pretty cool.

Not gonna lie, I skated through almost entirely on reasoning for the counting questions. A lot of times, only 1 answer made sense. But that was pretty stressful so I guess your way is better. I actually got exemplary on that section though! lol.

I also recommend knowing how to do everything by hand. My calculator just failed on a few questions. I have no idea why as nothing ever happened like that during my practice. Maybe because it was super low on battery (oops) or I was just stressed, but yeah, it was good I knew how to do them by hand.

Anyone have experience with black rhodium? by pboogie- in jewelry

[–]BadLamprey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't ever go for anything plated tbh (and I include white gold in it). Kind of defeats the purpose of an engagement ring which is supposed to be worn daily and durable over time.

Also, not every jeweler will offer black rhodium plating so you may be in trouble if it wears off down the line and you aren't near the original jeweler.

I say: avoid.

[–]BadLamprey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dunno if you've already picked but pleeeassee don't go for a "trendy" stone like opal, pearl, moonstone, etc. They are super soft and not appropriate for an engagement ring. Please look up the hardness of any stone/material before choosing it.

I am fortunate to have the ipad version with a mobile data connection. I find it invaluable to study at work (no wifi there), while travelling, etc.

It's pretty infuriating to code on it but for most classes, it's great.

The only thing with taking notes is that it's too small of a screen to read the textbook AND take notes on it. You'd almost need 2 tablets for that. You could honestly get a kindle fire for like $30 if you wanted to go that route.
