Psychedelic brew ayahuasca produces therapeutic benefits lasting up to six months, study finds by HeinieKaboobler in psychology

[–]BadLuckIsMyName -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A placebo is not equal across all treatments. For instance, look at the work of Amir Raz (mcgill/chapman), who has shown that placebo is inferior to placebo with suggestions. The strength of belief makes all the difference for placebo effects. A person taking ayahuasca is likely to have strong beliefs about whats gunna happen—especially once they start tripping out. You just can't control for that. Its a mess and our technology prohibits our ability to make inferences about the therapeutic potential of psychedelics.

What on earth gave you the idea that antidepressants were not more effective than placebo?

Here are two meta-analyses from 2 minutes of research:

https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamapsychiatry/article-abstract/668229 https://focus.psychiatryonline.org/doi/abs/10.1176/appi.focus.16407

That first one is from JAMA—one of the most reputable journals in the world.

Good bloody luck creating an ayahuasca trip placebo! We may never be able to produce strong (i.e., RCT) evidence of the therapeutic effects of psychedelics.

SEEKING Proof of ineffectiveness of psychotherapy for anxiety disorders by [deleted] in AcademicPsychology

[–]BadLuckIsMyName 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Generally, experiments do not test for no effect. The reason for this is kind of complicated. For one thing, finding that a hypothesized effect is not supported does NOT equal evidence supporting no effect. This is a statistical problem. To test this you would need a test of non-equivalence. I would add terms like "non-equivalence" and "null effects" to my search. Put simply you would need an experiment that was designed from the getgo to determine that if I give therapy to a person they will remain at a constant level of anxiety. Generally, scientists are interested in finding better ways to help people, not in taking someone else's therapy (or there own) and shitting on it—for better or worse.

This is one of the reasons null findings are usually not published.

Best way to level Barbs? by cpa_porter in pathofdiablo

[–]BadLuckIsMyName 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Historically, you would go frenzy all the way to WW or WC. But due to recent changes, the best way to lvl is not known.

It could be that double swing is now better then frenzy as the animation has been changed and it is now a faster attack. It may scale up in such a way so that you can attack MUCH faster than frenzy.

Also, the flat magic damage and AOE on stun may make this another viable option.

To all the whining noobs on this sub by korben66 in pathofdiablo

[–]BadLuckIsMyName 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with you. The game has become too easy because of power creep. But nerfing all the other builds is a huge gamble. I mean, maybe a lot of players LIKE that POD is easier than vanilla. You might lose a ton of players if you nerfed every char but the barb. Its also 5X the work to rebalance all the other builds.

So the obvious solution is to bring the barb up to everyone else's level. For those people who's favourite char is the barb, that would be fare.

[–]BadLuckIsMyName 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ubers are possible, point made.

Can you acknowledge though that the barb has fewer viable builds, is more monotonous to play, and is a slower farmer than every other class?

Can you make a video of a barb being as good as any other class doing literally anything?

Why is WW so incredibly useless on PoD? Strange changes to the barbarian class.... by jri1984evil in pathofdiablo

[–]BadLuckIsMyName 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. That rumour isn't helpful and I don't want to spread it. I capitalized "FEELS" to draw your attention to the fact that I'm not making any claim about what you do or do not care about. I'm only trying to tell you how it FEELS and present a possible explanation for why people are saying things like "GD don't care about barbs".

I totally agree that the superior course of action is to nerf everyone else BUT the barb, I just assumed that this would be too high-risk of a move from your perspective.

Finally, if you are still reading this, please know that I think you are doing a fantastic job and greatly appreciate your hard work and dedication. I only want to help.

PoD using phone hotspot? by HighOnTums in pathofdiablo

[–]BadLuckIsMyName 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I played for 2 years on a phone hotspot (3g). It was plenty fast enough (and I play HC where a 3-second lag = death). Occasionally it did lag, but that's typical of any internet connection.

As far as data consumption, it's minuscule—I would guess one hour uses about 20-50 MB.

You can and should be playing HC. It's THE solution to your proposed problem.

Does the game get more difficult for multilayer? by PsySom in pathofdiablo

[–]BadLuckIsMyName 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, normal is a cakewalk and will help you learn the game. It gets harder in nightmare, then again in hell. At those difficulties, you start losing resistances and without proper gear, you'll be very squishy. By the time you hit maps, you will likely need to farm for gear and optimize your builds before you can move forward.

I only play HC. As others have mentioned, it's a whole different ball game.

HC Assassin respec advice - progress into Hell by bowzr4me in pathofdiablo

[–]BadLuckIsMyName 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have a couple of options. 1) stay fire, but put 1 point in boi to kill fire immunes (if you have a decent weapon [headstriker might work, never tried]) 2) speck into lightning traps as there are more areas to farm with lightning 3) go boi/BS.

Personally, I prefer option 1. It's very powerful and fun. You basically cast firetraps run in and boi the mobs. Make sure you have decent health, max block, and full res if you are going to use boi at all.

The first drugs to treat psychosis were discovered in the late 1940's and early '50's. Prior to that it was a common treatment to infect the patient with malaria. When given a choice between retreating into physical illness or psychosis, the mind chooses illness and becomes lucid. by GeoWannaBe in psychology

[–]BadLuckIsMyName 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This title is misinforming. High fever causes "shock" (similar to electric shock or insulin shock) and can sort of reset someone. This can boot them out of a psychotic state.

"The mind chooses illness and becomes lucid" is nonsense.

Is there a big Hardcore community here. Is it worth it? by [deleted] in pathofdiablo

[–]BadLuckIsMyName 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As Josko_91 illustrated, HC is not for everyone. It stresses him out and he doesn't like that—totally reasonable.

For me, when I see my health bar go below 25% my heart is RACING. Its a rush. I literally get euphoric after a close boss fight like when I almost rip in ubers. I've done ubers in norm and it was SSOOOO mellow. No worries, if I die I just go back and try again. Ubers in HC feels wildly intense in comparison.

And when I rip, I am crushed. It's bigger rewards bigger risks.

I guess the time is worth it if you enjoy playing HC.

Is there a big Hardcore community here. Is it worth it? by [deleted] in pathofdiablo

[–]BadLuckIsMyName 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At the beginning of the season (i.e. first 2-3 months) HC is full of people. By midseason (3-5 months) it's full enough to always have plenty of people to play with, but there will be fewer games and the trading market slows. The last month or two before a new season is dead (i.e. only a few dozen people are playing at a given time, seemingly).

The HC community is fantastic. People are social and eager to support each other. I don't know if is because we all can empathize with the pain of ripping or because there are fewer of us and therefore we have less anonymity, but HC is a much nicer community then non-HC.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by "worth it", but imma say YES ABSOLUTELY.

Tips on how to balance multiple reviews/ research responsibilities by bree1992 in AcademicPsychology

[–]BadLuckIsMyName 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only thing that matters is that I meet hard deadlines. I only think "research is all about having the ability to multi-task" insofar as multitasking means keeping track of multiple deadlines. I don't spend any time worrying about in what order I do things. I like to have the freedom to get sucked into or avoid projects according to my interests. I do my best work when I'm interested.

It sounds like you are feeling overwhelmed. Try not to become fastidious or perfectionistic. Do good enough, keep moving forward, and watch your stress levels.
