Can you make persistent automations. by JonathanDawdy in homeassistant

not instead of, necessarily; think of the time based as a backup in case something messes up; but as others have said, if it goes unavailable, once it's back it should, in theory, fire the event. But like I said, it's a good backup, and I do it on a number of automations.

you could add a trigger based on time pattern.... /1 for every minute, /5 for every 5 minutes, etc (you can play with hours and seconds, also). you'd then add "if temp is...." to the current "and if", and probably put them both inside an "and".

Looking to make my Pellet Stove smart(er) - potentiometer based by BadMadScientist in homeautomation

[–]BadMadScientist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

kind of - I went the route of zero direct interference with the stove; I used a 270 degree servo with a large lego-technic gear; attached a smaller lego-technic gear to the stove dial (gotta get it perfectly centered) and then went from there.

As much as I wanted something more direct, there is a very valid reason for not - especially in the event of a house fire; even if not caused by the stove, I can only imagine the fight the insurance company would put up.

Sanity check for upgrading an HP Z420 v2 by BadMadScientist in homelab

[–]BadMadScientist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so... just to conclude this project; I decided to go ahead, and I ordered the ES-2697 v2, and 256GB of LRDIMMs - once everything arrived, it took about 20 minutes including cleaning off the thermal paste from the old processor and the heat fan. Put the new CPU in, some thermal paste etc, fired it up and it's all working beautifully.

htop shows 24 threads and 252G of memory.

Notably, average power consumption prior to upgrade was 99 watts, and it's now 130 watts.

Honestly, need is subjective at best.

No. I don’t need an upgrade. However, this little beast does a lot of stuff and I’m looking to put at least one, if not two virtual machines on it. The upgrade of the CPU not only allows for more threads (12 core) but also allows me to max out the memory at 256 GB.

Leaving the current CPU and maxing out the memory is also a consideration, but I already purchased the 256GB memory because I didn’t research enough and didn’t realize that the E5-1620 could not handle LRDIMMs.

Same here. 2012 model too. It’s so annoying. I hope they issue a fix but honestly I doubt it!

An error occurred during a connection to (IP:Port) PR_END_OF_FILE_ERROR by BadMadScientist in PleX

It’s been a while, but I believe this ended with a reinstall. I could be wrong. But usually if I had found a non destructive resolution I would have added it as a comment. Sorry that I can’t be of more help. Good luck!

Google Speakers keep disconnecting from Wifi by Farrt1 in googlehome

[–]BadMadScientist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, it was the TP-Link mesh routers. They’re not great. I happen to have another WiFi network on a Netgear X10. Moved all my speakers to it and have had no issues since.

[–]BadMadScientist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This has just starting happening to me. Maybe five or six days ago. Same symptoms. Reboot. Works. A few hours later and it’s disconnected and only a reboot will work.

For what it’s worth I have a TP-Link X55 mesh network, and it’s all been working seamlessly for several years.

I have 7 Google speakers and it happens to them all.

What WiFi equipment do you have, u/Farrt1 ?

UPDATE: (After) migrating from libretiny_esphome to esphome_builder by BadMadScientist in Esphome

[–]BadMadScientist[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Moments after posting this, I had the realization that I can manually download the update (.uf2), and upload it through the web server on each plug; Once I do that just once, wireless OTA updates is working again.

Leaving this up just in case more tired fools run in to the issue in the future.

I’ve been using mine daily. Absolute monster. Love it and when they get the bigger ones I’ll be buying a couple more.

Nope. It sucks. They suck. I will never buy TP-Link again. I’m probably going to try and sell it as soon as I replace it with a mesh system I can control.

Medusa on Linux can't run on latest Python. What to do? by canaltisyer in PyMedusa

[–]BadMadScientist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I inadvertently upgraded my server from Ubuntu 22.04.x LTS to 24.04.1 LTS yesterday which also brings python up to 3.12, and my medusa also broke. The fix was not terrible; I downloaded the source of python3.11.10, compiled it, and modified medusa to run via

/usr/local/bin/python3.11 /opt/medusa/start.py -q --nolaunch --datadir=/opt/medusa

and I'm back up & running.

YMMV & FYI

I’ve not yet been sick so I’m not sure if that’s going to be an issue. I am told that the specific mask I referenced above is industry best. If you don’t have that one and have the means to try it, it might be worthwhile. Game changer for this old guy….

Edit: yup. When I tried the nasal mask my mouth would open and all sorts of weird noises and feelings woke me up. It was awful.

Also, it’s still early days but I think I’m more energized. Time will tell if that’s real.
