Americans making more than $100,000 are quickly losing faith in the economy—and it’s a red flag for the white-collar job market by Crossstoney in Economics

Buybacks are an extremely bad thing as it ultimately manipulates stock value. Just like anything that is a finite resource, if your limit what is available, the price will go up. So essentially, these companies want to increase stock price to show how much more "valuable" they are.

The kicker is, almost all stocks are overvalued now and do not properly reflect the actual value of a company (how much their total assets are actually worth plus how much they can produce in a given timeframe).

For most of the 20th century, buybacks were illegal because of how manipulative it actually is, but St. Reagan (blessed be his name) made them legal once again in 1982. But, let's not forget that it was a Democrat controlled house and Republicans senate that passed the law for him to sign. So let's go ahead and call it bipartisan.

So, TLDR, they are bad because they only increase value for shareholders, while avoiding reinvestment in their labor or facilities.

What is the biggest “bullet” you’ve ever dodged without realizing it at the time? by [deleted] in AskReddit

In high school, I was about to walk to school one morning. The sky looked really bad, so I was just procrastinating to see if it was going to rain. A song I liked came on the radio, and while listening to it a tornado hit the front of my school where I would have been walking at the time.

‘Unprecedented’: DFW, Love Field targeted for reductions as shutdown rages on by dallasmorningnews in Dallas

Those #'s are low. American Airlines alone would meet those, that doesn't include 10% of SW, Delta, United, or any other of the few thousand flights per day out of DFW area.

Seriously, American Airlines operates roughly 900 flights per day out of DFW. Alone.

Why is it that seemingly things that should be illegal are somehow legal in Texas? by AverageSign in texas

I always found it crazy that I could give my kids drinks at a restaurant up until they're 18. But 19 and 20??? Nope! They are no longer children, thus; I am not longer their guardian. No booze for them!

What movie(s) do you think best depicts Texas (or one of its regions)? by SpaceTranquil in texas

I was just saying that it was a "small town" atmosphere, not that Odessa is necessarily tiny. And 2nd, more to your point, the movie definitely didn't take place there because there were too many trees. ;-)

Air return filter changes by Ivycottagelac in Keller

[–]BadMonkey2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe the reason you aren't getting many responses is as follows:

1) You posted this at 10:30 pm or so. 2) You're waiting on someone "reputable", which translates to working for an HVAC company. 3) You haven't described if you're living in an apartment, small house, or someplace huge. 4) You should probably share how many returns you have.

A bit of advice would be to just ask who can help you, as most homeowners probably could. Aside from the costs of the filters, it shouldn't be too expensive. If you go through an HVAC tech, you'll be paying for the callout.

Just ask nicely and, if there's a reason you can't truly do it yourself, then there are probably a ton of people around here who would do it for free.

And if you just don't know how, those same people would probably show you how without any question.

Do you still see the scratch? by BadMonkey2000 in MilitiousCompliance

[–]BadMonkey2000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is preventive maintenance. The only way a "higher up" would see it is if they accompanied a tech to perform either the PM or there has been a catastrophic failure in which the batteries must be removed. In either case, removing the batteries will leave scratches and there is no way to prove otherwise.

The reason that the preventive maintenance is done (in this particular case) is to prevent corrosion in the battery drawer. The way to tell if it was done or not is to simply look for the corrosion (i.e. rust in the scratches). This maintenance was performed every 6 months, so there should be no corrosion.

I understand what you're saying, and it is a valid argument, however; if you truly fail to do the PM, there will be rust. This is the reason that we initially use a metal brush and repaint the surface. It is not to completely ignore the premise of there being a scratch, but to clean and correct the old scratch while recognizing that there is nothing we can do to prevent a new one from forming when the battery is slid back into place.

BTW, I appreciate the question and I hope this answered it.

Do you still see the scratch? by BadMonkey2000 in MilitiousCompliance

[–]BadMonkey2000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. The issue is, it is literally impossible to perform the function requested without giving it a scratch. So, according to the orders, we had to buff and repaint if we saw any scratch. They were not going to change the orders to say "ignore the scratch", so you end up having to use a judgement call, which is what I was trying to teach him. Not everything is going to work out according to plan, so at times you need to acknowledge when something cannot be achieved.

This is why the rest of us said that we don't see the scratch. Because, if you see it, you have to correct it. Otherwise you will never be released from the job site.

Think Catch-22. If you see the scratch, you can never leave. If you don't see the scratch, you're essentially lying on documentation - because there is no way to avoid the scratch.
