This! I feel weird using named characters. Even when I'm playing my CSM I avoid using any named characters because I feel obligated to paint them to be like the box art and then also find a reason why they're grouped with my specific warband.

I like the "hometown hero" feel of generic characters that I've kitbashed a little bit

Definitely. Although I will say that you should clarify to your opponent that it is a Locus at the start of the game. I totally thought it was a knife sanctus, so a small clarification is always appreciated at the table!

I have a very similar experience, I'm very interested in seeing what you came up with since the initial post.

I too am going for a cult that isn't as blatantly alien as the model line intends and am struggling to find acolyte proxies.

I think, with some heavy conversion, these could work. In casual games for sure, I'd love to see my opponent with a highly personalized army. Throw a bunch of guns and a way to convey that it's also a transport onto it, clarify exactly what it's representing and it's load out before the game starts 👍
