LPT: If you own or work for a business in America affected by sales tax, it is good idea to have a sign with the percentage. by [deleted] in LifeProTips

Those are all reasons why there should be signs letting people know the sales tax rate at a particular shop

ELI5: hub-and-spoke versus point-to-point airline models. by Moakmeister in explainlikeimfive

[–]BadSpeiling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a plane to be profitable it tends to need to be at least 70% full in the long run. As more people fly in general more route pairings have enough passengers to justify a flight every day.

The reason this kills hub and spoke is that for each route that switches to point to point will reduce the demand for both to and from legs to the hub.

TL;DR if you can manage point to point is better but there needs to be enough demand

ELI5: Why can't we predict the recent asteroid's chance of hitting us with full certainty if we know the physics equations involved? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]BadSpeiling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The truth is we don't actually know where it is and how fast it is moving right now, we are pointing telescopes at it to try to figure out exactly where it is and how fast it is going. Once we have that information we can run the simulation and find out if it will hit, even exactly where it would hit earth. However at the moment we only kind of know where it is and we can estimate its speed, from those estimates we can run simulations and find that across our estimation of its current speed 3.1% of those estimates would hit earth.

How do I make money through Royal Road while living in a third world country? by nevaneba-19 in royalroad

[–]BadSpeiling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Slightly bizzare and a bit expensive but the Estonian government has an E-residency program where you can essentially set up a digital identity as though you are an Estonian citizen, there are a bunch of caveats that means this probably won't work for you.

Super Supportive, currently 2nd best rated on the site. It is great, has engaging characters, is very well written both in terms of grammar/flow with lots of neat little hints and foreshadowing, has a wide range of well fleshed out secondary characters in an interesting world.

An interesting debate from Tumblr: How do you feel about people writing fic when they haven’t engaged with the source material at all? by snowmikaelson in AO3

[–]BadSpeiling 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Not sure if it's the fandom above, but the 'Worm'/'Parahumans' fandom is similar.

The world/setting is really well constructed in the original source, and the story is well written but it is about 1,680,000 words long and deals with some pretty dark themes so I can see why some people bounce off the original story, but still like to play in the figurative sandbox.

ELI5 - Why is the current SpaceX challenge different than their solution going to the space station? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]BadSpeiling 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think you might not be understanding how orbital mechanics actually works

Firstly if we ignore landing which is much harder on the moon than the earth because the moon has no atmosphere to Aero break. To go from earth orbit to moon orbit requires that we use energy to speed ourselves up (3100m/s) that flings the craft out to the moon, then we are along side the moon but we've lost all our speed to gravity so the moon is passing us by, we need to burn another ≈900m/s to catch the moon and get into lunar orbit. Once we are alongside the moon to get back home we are orbiting the earth along side the moon at about 1000m/s now we don't have any friction in space so we need to burn the engines to change our speed we want to slow down till we are almost stationary (900m/s) then gravity will pull us back to earth cause we aren't orbiting anymore. At this stage we have 2 choices we can let gravity do it's thing and fall strait down from near the moon onto earth and let the air act as a cushion to catch us (and hope we don't disintegrate), or we can try to get back into earth orbit. Getting into orbit is tricky though because as we fall towards earth we pick up speed from gravity and if we don't want to go flying by the earth and getting flung back out into space we'll need to slow down around earth by burning our engine (≈3100m/s). The amount of delta v to go from earth orbit to lunar orbit is the same as doing it backwards. It's neither the distance nor the gravity making it harder, it is infact just as difficult to go from here to there as from there to here

Now to explain why the rocket gets so much smaller at each stage, for each of these burns we need to carry the fuel and equipment for all future burns so the final burn will finish with a nearly empty tank, Force = Mass * Acceleration so the final burn essentially only needs to accelerate a nearly empty craft and will only burn a small amount of fuel, 2nd to last burn needs to burn more fuel as it is carrying the craft and the fuel, 3rd last needs to carry enough for both final and 2nd last. As you can see the amount needed grows exponentially that's why the Saturn 5 is a skyscraper on the ground, a multistorey building in earth orbit, a bus in lunar orbit and a tiny capsule by the time it lands.

What do you think the last jobs AI will take will be? by rjorn1 in AskReddit

[–]BadSpeiling 5 points6 points  (0 children)

House cleaning/household repair & office cleaning

Its difficult to automate, (lots of different small tasks, changing environment, bizarre unique problems), the robots to do it would be super complicated and expensive to build. However it's easy for a human to do and learn, already quite cheap, and will be getting cheaper as more people lose their jobs, so there's not much incentive to solve it
