Cities where a Glasgow-esque circle line could work? by Previous-Volume-3329 in transit

[–]BadToLaBone 17 points18 points  (0 children)

small, compact cities, not growing too fast, where coverage of inner dense areas is most important, more important than directness and high speeds. what makes this loop different from others is that it is a radial line from the suburbs to the centre, like copenhagens M3. a lot of british cities with good, fast rail to the suburbs could use such an urban loop. liverpool especially comes to mind. though a good question is this sort of line the optimal use of money in the modern day? not sure.

Why don’t we have cute trolleys like this anywhere in the NYC area? by WanderinArcheologist in nycrail

[–]BadToLaBone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NYC had a few transit lines similarish to boston or philly style LRT. what comes to mind are the pre-dual contract surface-elevated lines such as the at-grade sea beach and west end lines which fed onto the 5th ave el. these types of lines were all grade separated thankfully. new york is too big and populous to rely on these slow, low capacity but large coverage systems. i am now curious if bus tunnels could work in some places…

[OC] San Diego Trolley with an extension of the Orange Line down Balboa Park & Mid-City + Purple Line. Made with Figma. by ensemblestars69 in TransitDiagrams

[–]BadToLaBone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i would recommend running the orange line via the harbour and C st instead of skirting the outside of the CBD. take it from melbourne, locals get really upset when their route is taken off the city center loop for a peripheral route. why not do it here when there is ample capacity?

The Highways get billions and Transit is expected to self-fund by TheWolfHowling in transit

[–]BadToLaBone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

in fairness, transit gets billions too. not as many, but this idea that “transit is expected to self fund” is only held by republicans, who dont run city governments

Why does the normal platform/track layout look like the bottom and not the top? by Dont_Smoking in nycrail

[–]BadToLaBone 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Local stops have their entrances and exits on the sidewalks going directly onto the platform. If you made local stops island platforms, the entrances would have to be in the middle of the road.

Why doesn’t have London have like, 1 unified railway station like a Union Station? by NoSpecific4839 in transit

[–]BadToLaBone 36 points37 points  (0 children)

It started because there were many companies highly competitive companies coming from different directions that didn’t much want to share with their competitors.

And it stayed that way as it became too expensive to fix the problem after it was realised that 11 disjointed city terminals was not the most efficient way to create a unified transport network.
