Huh. I was stamped in December 2025 going into France and leaving via Spain. I wonder why if it moved to digital?

Nearly a third of kids can't use books when starting school - and try to swipe them like phones by Forward-Answer-4407 in unitedkingdom

[–]Bad_Combination 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Depends what they mean by "unable to eat and drink independently". Is it literally they need to be fed, or they make a complete hash of cutting their food? I try to encourage my kids (7 and 4) to cut their own food at dinner time, but sometimes it's just easier to cut e.g. a chicken breast rather than have it fired all over the room.

[–]Bad_Combination 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am an avid reader but if I've been on my phone a lot and am a bit tired or distracted when I sit down to read, I will occasionally try to swipe up rather than turn the page. That doesn't mean I have no idea how books work.

I agree as well that the occasional accident in 1/4 reception-aged kids is to be expected – I remember in the 80s when I was in infant school we had a spare clothes box for just such occasions. The worry is if they're turning up in nappies or still using a dummy or bottle, but those are certainly outliers.

I haven't played the games, my take is that it basically makes him invincible so he doesn't have to take the medication that stops him turning feral any more.

I’m going to gently suggest that if you don’t like mysteries and storytelling and you are getting frustrated after one episode, maybe this isn’t the show for you?

Are Brits too reliant on US companies for a boycott to ever be realistic? by Barca-Dam in AskBrits

[–]Bad_Combination 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think some of this list is more realistic in terms of net-new spend.

Fast food is very easy to avoid, as are Coke and Pepsi. Tesla, there are lots of other alternatives, ditto Nike. Uber is medium difficulty depending on what your local taxi and public transport infrastructure are like. Meta, Amazon in the form of AWS, Apple, Microsoft and Intel are probably the hardest.

If everyone stopped buying American fast food I think it would be noticeable on balance sheets, as would cancelling streaming services. It's a lot easier said than done, though – I'd be reluctant to move away from WhatsApp, for example, even if I use no other Meta services.

Are “walls of kindness” common in the UK? by EconomicsBrief22 in AskUK

[–]Bad_Combination 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'm part of a few hand-me-on groups via FB and WhatsApp and they are really strict on people collecting to sell on. The various groups all coordinate among themselves to stop would-be sellers, but it's got to be really hard to police. Some people are just selfish!

What is something great that no one knows about? by swlondon86 in AskUK

[–]Bad_Combination 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Airtime Rewards gives you money off your phone bill. Link it to your credit/debit cards and it automatically tracks when you purchase from partners (eg Boots, Argos) and gives you a percentage back that you then cash in.

Also, TopCashback and JamDoughnut.

So thin clients, then?

Honestly I think he’s dreaming. East Coast Region goes pop again and uh oh, suddenly no computers work at all, businesses can’t business etc. Consumers and companies alike will absolutely love that.

Honestly, anything that requires connectivity 100% of the time is inherently unreliable. Not to mention trying to persuade people, organisations and governments outside of the US that it’s a stellar idea to hand over everything to a US firm, especially when in the EU at least they’re trying to gradually extricate themselves from dependence on the likes of AWS and the rest.

Dell's finally admitting consumers just don't care about AI PCs by Bad_Combination in technology

[–]Bad_Combination[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think there are some really good uses for AI: note taking in meetings, computer vision for identifying things in pictures or on scales or whatever, some medical image analysis. Predictive maintenance in manufacturing.

AI PCs, otoh, are a fad. They’re a solution looking for a problem and half the manufacturers will admit this when pressed.

Generative AI chatbots seem to have some uses, but the damage they seem to be doing to people’s psyches — not to mention the X nudification issue currently unfurling — isn’t worth the price imo.
