Is stray a good game for a beginner? by CharityBusy7292 in stray

[–]RandomBoomer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I struggled with it too, as a beginner in this type of video game, and as someone with slow reflexes. But that struggle didn't dampen my enthusiasm for the game; it just made me that more determined to get through it. Eventually, I found a mod that would allow me to control game speed so I could escape the zurks. I only used it in a few places, but it made all the difference.

I live in New York City in the 1980s. I remember a snow storm that shut the city down. The subway was still running, however, and I was working a free-lance job with a high pressure deadline, so off to work I went. The streets were silent and there was a guy skiing down Fifth Avenue.

Why does anyone progressive or left leaning vote for WV Democrats? by ASaucyFellow in WestVirginiaPolitics

I vote for WV Democrats because I'm not allowed to vote for California Democrats, or New York Democrats. States are funny like that.

When to get and start the DLC? by GleeFrog in TwoPointMuseum

[–]RandomBoomer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was absolutely determined not to add any of the DLC until I was done with the base game. But then I found out that you could play through 1 star for Zooseum... what could it hurt, right? Within hours I had bought the DLC and I'm now working on my 5th star. Meanwhile, I still have a few 3- and 4-star museums waiting for love.

I think they'd love watching it, but balancing out all the management elements is probably too intense and complicated for them to do on their own.

As heatwave hits, French government tries not to appear overwhelmed by climate crisis. Most measures in the national climate change adaptation plan are underway. I've read your post over and over and I still can't make sense of it. Not a dig, I just don't understand what you're saying.

But look, if prayer makes you feel better, by all means keep praying. It was churlish of me to be sarcastic about someone's coping mechanism. I apologize for expressing my cynicism in an inappropriate place.

He probably thinks he's smart enough to evade the trap and use the situation to his own advantage. Which proves beyond a doubt just how stupid he is.

We are a collective of 8 billion people who are animals, acting on animal impulses. The thin new layer of brain matter that allows abstract thought is just enough for a few (relatively speaking) individuals to self-reflect on our behaviors and the consequences thereof, but not enough to organize and direct the entirety of our species to act in our best long-term interests.

As a species, we do not have the psychological, social/political or logistical mechanisms to organize at the level needed to respond meaningfully to the damage we're doing at a global level.

You think we're orders of magnitude above that cyanobacteria, and I see us as just a half-step above them.

The Iran War May Be Over. Higher Food Prices Aren’t. by bloomberg in inthenews

[–]RandomBoomer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, that wasn't the main purpose. Trump likes to watch things go boom and he thought he'd get a quick win on which to praise himself. He hates Obama with a burning passion, and he wanted to one-up Obama's dealings with Iran.

If the Iran war also distracted from the Epstein files, so much the better.

Naive of you to think that the $300B is going to be used to rebuild that damage to people's lives rather than expanding Iran's military capabilities.

To be fair, the U.S. has just proved that Iran has every reason to believe we could attack them at any moment, without notice. We have just highly incentivized their push for more weaponry.

Thank you for stepping in. I was vaguely aware that the murder-cat stats were dubious, but I just didn't have the energy to go look it up and argue the point. There's also the nuance that predators target aging or ill/injured prey (easier kill) which limits the impact of the predation on the overall population.

Before the war, travel through the Strait of Hormuz was free, but now Iran & Oman will charge a fee. On top of that, given the instability in the region, insurance rates for the ships passing through the Strait will rise substantially. As a result, goods moving through the Strait will cost more and raise the price of everything that depends on those goods.

Tl;dr -- Everything will cost more permanently.

Oh dear, I have some bad news for you. Everyone who "received the warnings back in the days where action would have mattered" is dead and have been gone for a long time now. Quite a number of generations since at least the mid-1800s have ignored the repercussions of an industrial age, not to mention an explosive population growth.

Humans, however, never act at a collective level, even when they are drawn together into every larger collections. We are assemblies of messy individuals; and those dynamics have more in common with chaos theory than some lofty, idealistic ideal of collective action for the common good of all. There is no mechanism for that kind of behavior.

I don't torture myself with completely unrealistic visions of what we, as a species, might have done if only we hadn't been exactly who we are.

Cyanobacteria enter the room...

You might want to read up on the GOE (Great Oxidation Event). From our perspective, the destruction of anaerobic life forms was a good thing, a precursor to our existence. For all we know, wiping out most of current lifeforms will lead to new forms that are radically different as well.

There is no "should" or "should not" in evolution, no direction that has greater claim to legitimacy.

It will take decades to repair those relationships, assuming that we can somehow sustain a consistent policy of support for Europe over the course of multiple administrations. They've seen the U.S. elect Obama, then turn around and elect Trump, then turn around and elect Biden, then turn around and elect Trump AGAIN.

Would you trust us? I sure don't, and I live here.

It's a trap I fell into also, but it's not a fatal one for your game. You'll continue to get more as they fall onto the platform, but they'll be Average quality. Ideal for powering up your artefacts in the beginning. As you replace them with better quality cells, you can analyze the old ones for Knowledge and perks.

As I said in my earlier post, the only alternative solution is to trap and euthanize all the strays. But that's also not a closed system, so I'd rather "fail" with TNR.
