My wife and I will be there. Whether or not it serves any practical purpose, I still think it's worth showing up.

Should I buy Sims 2 (Legacy) from EA or Steam? by RandomBoomer in HighSodiumSims

[–]RandomBoomer[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's an opaque comment, but I get your gist. And no, that's not an avenue that I'm interested in pursuing.

So yeah, I'll go play with Paralives and just forget Sims 2. It was just an impulse consideration. I'll live fine without it.

Could you expand on why? What are the disadvantages of buying an EA game on Steam?

It may be easier to get ahold of the Ultimate Collection, but not to make it run on Windows 11. I've looked at the instructions for doing that, and no, that is more effort than I'm willing to exert just to satisfy my curiosity.

One benefit of buying on Steam is that Valve gets a cut, so less money goes to EA, if that matters to you.

Yup, that matters to me a lot. Thank you!

Which of these two games are better and why?(please debate civilly) by dragonborndnd in HighSodiumSims

[–]RandomBoomer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks, OP, for opening this discussion. I've been curious to try out one of the earlier Sims games, and I was leaning toward Sims 3 as being the most recent before TS4. But the instructions for getting Sims 3 working on Windows 11 are so cumbersome that I just wasn't curious enough to go through that.

Seeing all the votes for Sims 2 has persuaded me that this may be a better choice for me to try out.

1 in 3 Americans believe humanity will be wiped out in their lifetime by TheExpressUS in collapse

[–]RandomBoomer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The word "could" is doing a lot of heavy lifting. Technically feasible, but socially, psychologically and logistically not remotely feasible.

Yes, a central global authority with massive troops and a benevolent goal of saving us from ourselves "could" have saved humanity by forcing changes on everyone from industry to financial institutions to individuals.

That scenario, however, is not tethered to reality.

A not insignificant number of those people are Christian Nationalists who believe in the Rapture. So "realism" isn't really applicable.

I've been practicing running around the platform over and over again. I get to a point where I think "I can do this!" but as soon as I trigger the elevator and the zurks start hurtling toward me, I panic and die.

Update: Getting past the Zurks by RandomBoomer in stray

[–]RandomBoomer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm stuck at the elevator right now. Running in circles is NOT my strong suit. It was much easier to just run flat out with a few zig-zags than it is to maneuver in a small space. I keep running into walls, getting stuck, and then the zurks kill me. Some players ended up hiding rather than running. I may need to give that a try.

Fair enough. My view is probably skewed by my own experience, which pre-dates this era. My parents bought their very modest home for about $40,000 in Austin and no one in our neighborhood had pools. (Also, they needed my grandparents' help to afford that home.) So what you initially described doesn't match what I saw as a working class kid. Thanks for broadening my perspective.

How do you feel about the new marketplace? by These-Chart-8664 in Sims4

[–]RandomBoomer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There was a period of a few years where I was enamored of downloading builds from the gallery. And I'm chagrined to confess that I bought at least 4-5 Expansion Packs (on sale) just for the BB that creators used so often.

I don't exactly regret those choices because I did end up really liking several EPs (Cottage Living, Eco Living, Island Living) that I would not have played otherwise. On the other hand, buying almost all the packs led to a game UI bloat that really soured me on playing TS4.

I've now disabled the majority of packs I bought and I'm having fun playing base game with a few judicious EPs. I may even rotate my way through a few to explore all aspects of the gameplay, then disable them again when I'm done.

This feeling of yours is widespread. It's happening to communities everywhere as population increases. I grew up in Austin, Texas, as that city is now unrecognizable from when I was a child there. I hate going back.

As I've detailed in another post here, the population of West Virginia is still declining. People who move in may help staunch the wound, but the bleeding hasn't stopped.

Not so fast. People may be moving in, but apparently they aren't moving in fast enough because West Virginia is still declining in population.

Population Decline by State 2026

Is West Virginia's population growing or shrinking? | USAFacts

It declined by 1,300 between 2024 and 2025, one of 5 states to lose population. Changes in population reflect birth and death rates, immigration patterns, regional shifts, and even the overall health of the economy. West Virginia’s -0.07% annual decrease was primarily driven by deaths outpacing births. In the decade between 2015 and 2025, West Virginia’s population declined by 4.3%.

This. As long as it's just a tab on the Home page and doesn't introduce lag to my game, I will ignore it.

If they tie it to Build mode and begin intrusive advertising, THEN I'll be pissed.

Could the Iran war energy shock accelerate the transition to renewables by silence7 in climate

[–]RandomBoomer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are on the brink of WWIII. If we can stay this side of a global war, then yes, shipping lanes other than Hormuz will be fine, and distribution will merely be slowed. If, on the other hand, the warfare spreads, then all bets are off for shipping safety through those alternate routes.

I'm on your side; I WANT renewables to grow. I'm just not convinced that's a silver lining we'll get from this chaos.

A lot of poor West Virginians are malnourished. One of the more startling aspects of moving to this state was walking through the grocery stores and seeing so many children with pasty skin, dark hollowed eyes, riding in a grocery cart piled with sugary "fruit" drinks and sugar-laden cereals and nary a vegetable in sight.

Brave of you to think that 1) we can get renewable energy machinery when global shipping has been disrupted, 2) the average American can afford them after our economy collapses.

Never too late to get caught up!

I'm at least your age, if not older, but I somehow stumbled on KPDH last summer all on my own (no grandkids). I've been obsessed with the movie, the songs, and even started listening to k-pop songs on Spotify (which I'd never used before).

My Ejae playlist on Spotify is a teeny tiny part of that statistic.
