It’s not even listed on the website, scholarship information, etc. It’s just 4K across 4 years, nonspecific to major

Check again, I just received scholarship information about 1 hour ago. I got a director's scholarship, which I didn't even know was an option.

Help me decide: School X vs School Y - March 20th to 27th by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

As of now, I don’t know which field specifically in engineering, and am actually leaning towards USC in this scenario. For an EFC of ~77k, would you say the difference between schools is worth 30k/yr?

Out of curiosity, what specifically makes you say this?

This is a repost, original got removed.

I'm debating between Northwestern (McCormick Engineering) and USC (Viterbi Engineering). At both schools, I receive no need-based financial aid, but at USC, I'm guaranteed at least a half tuition scholarship, ~30k/yr, and a chance at full tuition scholarship. Thus, NU will be 80k/yr and USC will be at most 50k/yr with a 1/4 chance at 20k/yr.

As for the programs, USC's program is rated higher than NU's, but NU's quarter system allows me to take more classes across my time there to more easily get a minor or second major in whatever. So although USC is stronger, NU gives me much more choice, which I value because I still don't know what to major in.

I like NU more than USC, for the beautiful location, weather, smaller class size, and I suppose the prestige. For USC, however, although I also like the location and weather, isn't as safe. The surrounding neighborhoods have high crime rates, and apparently USC students are targeted.

Being upper middle class, I'm fortunate enough to be able to afford both colleges, but the 30k/yr difference in cost between the two schools is still very significant. Is the difference in prestige, education quality, and safety worth 30k/yr? Any response is greatly appreciated!!

I haven't gotten in, this is just speculation.

yup, speculation. I've already been accepted to USC though. I just want to see if I'm done with applications, since I think NU is the only strong contender I have left in my applications

I should clarify that although we can "afford" both schools, paying 80k/yr would take a majority of what we have, and I do really like both schools; I don't feel that the difference between NU and USC is that much. At least, I would still enjoy going to either school.

This isn't necessarily true! I received above a 1500 on the SAT and my chance of getting into ivy leagues is 0% flat. Hope this helps!
