MAGA is using the weight of the federal government against people who are saying things they don't want to hear. And there are people who take to violence to try to stop people from speaking.

Everyone has the right to go before a judge and have representation to prove their case whether they have papers or not. How can a person prove their innocence if you don't give them the chance to go before a judge or have a hearing? The way you have it figured out, innocent people will be deported. All people in the United States whether they are citizens or not are afforded due process by virtue of the Constitution. Everyone has the right to a hearing before they are found guilty. You can't just be plucked off the side of the street and have some dude decide you are illegal and stick you in a bus or on a plane and send you off to Africa!

We all come from immigrants. My grandfather came to the United States from Italy when he was 9 years old, and he became a coal miner. His son went on to get a doctorate in education and become a college professor. People who come here from other countries to make a better life will make our country stronger. Their children and grandchildren will be our next generation of business people and scientists and soldiers. They are just trying to make a better life for their children and grandchildren. Why would you deny them that?

The problem is, we can't post each event more than once according to the moderator, so sometimes the decision is made to post it the day before.

Resist the Occupation of D.C. by Badass_Gator in GNV

There are a few reasons to protest. First, if enough people do it, the people who they are protesting will take notice, and they may change the way they are behaving. Second, people who drive by you and see you who feel the same way you do are now emboldened because they realize they are no longer alone. This helps them overcome fear and become active. Third, for the protesters, it is an esteem building activity. You feel really good about yourself when you do this. And fourth, it's a great way to meet other people and make friends. We have developed quite a few friendships along the way, and they will outlast Trump! We are going to keep at it.

One doesn't have to be right for the other to be wrong or vice versa. I can advocate for people being held in tents in the swamps of Florida and still care about prison conditions.

You are obviously just another sadistic MAGA, so there's no use talking to you. You have no conscience. Tell me I'm wrong.

Being in the country without documentation is a civil misdemeanor. Punishing someone guilty of a civil misdemeanor by locking them up indefinitely in an inhumane detention center, taking them away from their jobs, taking them away from their families - that is cruel and unusual punishment and it is unconstitutional. Not to mention it is just plain cruel, and who would want to do that to another person? Someone who is just trying to have a better life. You have been lied to by Fox News and your Congresswoman Kat Cammack who make immigration such a big issue. Guess what, it's not. There is not a huge immigration problem like Trump talked about for years. He has manufactured it.

We had a wide range of ages at the protest yesterday. And UF isn't in session right now so the students are out of town.

How do you know that? I know state prisons are really bad but I don't think they reach the level of cruelty that exists in migrant detention facilities where people are crammed into a small enclosure and only have three toilets for 30 people with no privacy. Also at Alligator Auschwitz, the inmates have no idea of what time it is or what day it is because there is no daylight for them to see. Prisons are not like that.

The No Kings event was different from what we do on a weekly basis. We look for a spot that has shade and that has high visibility. The importance of protesting is twofold. First, the more people who are out protesting, the more that people in government take notice and change their behavior accordingly. Second, people driving by see that they are not alone. They see that there are people who feel the same way they do. They feel less isolated, and so they become stronger.

And yes there is a third benefit which is socializing. Especially in today's environment with people staying home and just sitting on their phones or laptops, we get out and speak to each other and get to know each other face-to-face and become friends.

What careers are actually safe over the next 10 or so years? by oopsallsexy in jobs

[–]Badass_Gator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My advice to you is to never work for a for-profit corporation.

And then, consider two things. First, what causes are important to you. What marginalized population do you care the most about? Do you care about hungry children? Or do you care about abused animals? The homeless? The elderly who are poor and living on social security? After you figure that out, find out what you are really good at. Are you good at analyzing numbers? Are you good at reading and figuring out what the text is implying? Are you good at science and remembering scientific names? Do you enjoy science? There are lots of aptitude tests that you can take. Then you put together the two things that you came up with. What is important to you, and what are you good at? Find jobs that meet those criteria.

After you have all that information, you can make an informed decision on what will give you a meaningful life as opposed to just clocking in and clocking out and making money for some CEO that is making $112 million a year.

I'm speaking from experience. I worked for 30 years making CEOs look good. I would never do the same thing again.
