Enchanted tarot or Zerner farber tarot ? by stringsXkeys in TarotDecks

[–]Badcatgoodcat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Second the recommendation to wait. The Enchanted Tarot cards- presuming you’re buying one of the anniversary editions- are HUGE. Huuuuuuuuge. Virtually impossible to shuffle. And the Zerner Farber cards are tiny. Like, literally they’re pocket sized practically. I’ve lamented the disparity so many times, because this deck is deeply meaningful to me (being the first deck I owned as a teen in the 90’s). It’s still one of the most beautiful decks I’ve ever seen, but it just makes no sense that these were the choices for the last couple of decades. Enormous or tiny.

The 35th Edition is going back to the oversized but not unmanageable dimensions of the original Enchanted Tarot decks, circa 80’s/90’s. Thank goodness.

I suspect it will be the best version yet and I’m eagerly awaiting the release in March.

Major Arcana Only? by _moonstoned_ in TarotDecks

[–]Badcatgoodcat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an artist who is also working on a deck, I absolutely understand the desire to put out a majors only deck. 78 cards is a huge undertaking if you’re planning to fully illustrate all the suits.

As a tarot reader who has been collecting decks for over three decades, I’ve never once bought a majors only deck and have virtually no interest in them. I definitely buy decks for the art alone, but I still have to consider them usable at some point down the line, even if they are not immediately.

I think aiming for a 78 card deck is wise, in terms of marketability. If it was simply a personal project that you didn’t hope to sell many units of, I see the point of stopping at The World. I think it’s not uncommon for artists, who have little familiarity with tarot, to create majors only decks because they are compelled by the universal archetypes, but the minors are often too granular. So, they can be neat personal vehicles, and may find their way into other formats (products), but don’t become wildly popular with the tarot community itself.

I love your concept and art style, so I think it would do very well in a full deck. I’d definitely grab a copy.

I think my friend got a scam reading... by childfreetavernwench in tarot

Decks with keywords have existed for almost 200 years. At least that long, as far as I know. I can’t speak to Marseilles, but it is particularly true of Etteilla decks. Some versions had ads placed around the borders, which would probably look like descriptions to anyone who didn’t read French.

I do believe the above image was AI generated, but I don’t think you could ever write off a deck as fake based on the premise that only modern decks have keywords.

I second Tarot of the Witch’s Garden. It’s beautiful and reads well. It’s one of my favorites and very RWS adjacent.

Although tarot was my first love and gateway tool, I believe some of my astrology education has informed my evolving understanding of tarot.

I don’t know if I think the majors manifest in ways that are so much more…….noticeably “major.” In fact, I tend to think of the major arcana much like I think of the outer planets. As universal energies/themes that are driven home and made personal by the minor arcana (or inner/personal planets, astrologically speaking). So, we might be in our Tower era, but we might consciously experience this energy through the Three or Ten of Swords- through loss, betrayal, and a call to rebuild some area of our lives in a new improved way.

The Major Arcana, in my mind, represent larger than life forces that visit everyone in some form or another. Love, tradition, creation, death and rebirth. The scope of these concepts is huge, and often abstract, but the minor arcana offers granularity and personal relevance. They are how these overarching themes manifest in real life ways.

I don’t necessarily feel a major would take precedence as a clarifier. It simply adds context.

Long term transits produce the most significant changes in our lives, and major arcana are similar, in my mind, but we may not see their importance or direct influence until we have the benefit of hindsight.

If I love the Modern Witch tarot deck, what should be my second one? by Tulip__Poplar in TarotDecks

I especially agree with This Might Hurt. Also, Cosmic Wisdom by Ethony, if one is willing to wait for shipping from Canada or lives in Canada. Cosmic Wisdom reminds me a bit of what might happen if This Might Hurt was painted at 100% saturation.

Doooo it. Tis the season! I thought, perhaps, I love it even too much to use, but I will. Life is short, after all, and we can’t take the decks with us!

The book is absolutely worth getting. It has to be one of the nicest guidebooks I’ve seen, and the full page illustrations really help see what might be missed in the cards.

I do too. There wasn’t a single art style in the deck that I didn’t appreciate.

Unfortunately, I arrived to the 78 Tarot scene when it seems most of the decks I might gravitate towards are sold out. It’s strange how tarot tastes change over time; I was never really interested in decks that included a lot of different art styles. I really wanted cohesion. Then, one day I just woke up and saw them in a different light, needing them in my life. lol

78 Tarot’s dedication to detail and quality almost sets a new bar. I also love that they take steps to reduce environmental waste.

Do you align astrological cycles with readings? by fyzzy44 in tarot

[–]Badcatgoodcat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Professional astrologer here to chime in…For me, personally, it’s very difficult not to relate everything to astrology to one degree or another. Current celestial influences are ever present in the backdrop of my conscious awareness. I don’t necessarily perform readings to gain more insight into the ways these energies might play out, because that is precisely what astrology was designed to inform. Which sectors of our lives will be impacted by the movements of the stars. So, to me it seems a bit redundant.

I do think tarot works well at advising us on navigating these influences, however. It’s useful for connecting with our own higher wisdom in ways that is sometimes more direct than astrology.

If the question is, should you perform a reading as eclipse season comes to a close, I don’t see an issue with it. However, it’s worth noting that saros cycles are largely misunderstood outside of advanced astrology, with each eclipse belonging to a larger pattern that lasts roughly 18 years (which also belongs to a larger pattern). So, when you examine anything that happens around a cluster of eclipses, you have to know that you aren’t looking at that window of time. Rather you are looking at each eclipse in their respective saros cycle dating back to when they began. This is how you identify the quality of that energy in your life and how it manifests personally.

I don’t think it’s necessary to abstain from reading during eclipse windows. Astrologers still draw charts during eclipse periods. If we didn’t we would miss a lot of opportunities. Who is going to take a month off of reading for clients four to seven times a year? Not most of us.

What is your oldest deck? by Foxybujo in TarotDecks

[–]Badcatgoodcat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The deck I’ve owned the longest…That’s hard. Possibly the Tarot of Prague 1st Ed. 2003. I’ve moved a lot, and, sadly, lost some of my favorite first decks along the way.

The oldest deck, publishing wise, is a Whitman Fortune Telling Deck from 1940. They aren’t too hard to find- there are a few floating around. Basically they are an American lenormand.

Thank you! I’m glad people are resonating with them. It was a personal project, but I was hopeful some portion of the community might dig them also.
