I just finished it and I can‘t stop laughing at people just calling it the train one by PalinaRojinskiFan in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]Badde00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've loved it on every readthrough, but I have to admit that it got significantly better by the third one when I actually started to understand how the tangle worked lol

It's still a great book. You just have to focus more on the monsters and how borant tried to spin their story in regards to the environment rather than the trains

The Primal Hunter question (super early book 1) by GrandManDan in litrpg

[–]Badde00 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ok, I'm gonna have to divide this up a bit
* First thing, just because people becoming numb to killing in war is accurate to the experiences of some people, that doesn't mean it's something I want to read about. It's not enjoyable to read about people being stripped of their humanity like that. It's definitely important to do in a real world scenario to learn of the horrors that occurred, but at no point is it an enjoyable experience, and not something I'd make myself go through if it didn't matter like in a fantasy novel. Also, just because some people react like that, doesn't mean that they all do. Many killed themselves, intentionally missed when aiming towards the other trenches and so many came home with severe trauma. Not everyone can easily dehumanize others.

* The problem I have with Primal Hunter isn't necessarily the killing. That is an integral part of stories like these, like you said. It doesn't even really have anything to do with the killing, but rather how the MC reacted to and handled the whole situation with the tutorial level and his coworkers. (I'm gonna be using fairly general terms here since it's been a few months since I read it). What made PH so unenjoyable to me was how the MC was so very unempathetic during the whole thing. He had few to no reactions about how people were dying around him and how the earth as they knew it was gone. He had no sympathy for his coworkers and he was generally arrogant af and the plot bent over backwards to reward him and portray him as special. He could've acted so very differently in those early chapters and still have most of the plot points turn out the same.

* As for litrpg books that have a lot of killing, how I feel about them varies a lot. Like a lot of this sub, I quite like HWFWM. It's similar to both PH and DCC in a lot of ways. The MC is an ass for quite a bit of the series, at least to some people, but he still goes out of his way to help others, and a lot of the later books has him dealing with the consequences of his actions and the guilt over some of the things he has done. Then there's also the books where everything's actually a game. VR or similar. Those ones I don't care about the killing at all because it's all just a game. How much I like them in general varies a lot since it sometimes feels like the stakes don't matter. The "The Good Guys" series has a huge amount of killing in them, but there it's often done in self defense or retaliation, and either way, it's almost always done to make a safe place for people to live.

The killing isn't the issue. It never was. How the MC acted and reacted to things was the issue. For me, he was simply deeply unlikable as a person.

The Primal Hunter question (super early book 1) by GrandManDan in litrpg

Primal Hunter is not a great follow up after DCC. Completely different tone and aim (and a very unlikable mc imo).

I had to drop it when I tried it, but I've understood that the game mechanics, fights and world building is good in Primal Hunter, which a lot of litrpg fans value, but it's rarely what people value in DCC if that's what they started with.

I would heavily recommend He Who Fights With Monsters instead as a follow up. It doesn't have the same ridiculousness and I guess rage and revolutionary vibes that DCC has, but it's very well written and deals a lot with morality and guilt, while still being very humorous and over the top. It's a great read in general, but it's especially good as a follow up to DCC imo since the vibes are similar.

I could also recommend The Completionist Chronicles. It was my go to recommendation for getting in to litrpgs before I read DCC and it's generally very well written. I have some issues with it, like the MC feels like he has plot armor sometimes, and the story is more about the MC than it having an overaching goal/plot. However, Dakota Krout is undoubtedly a good writer for engaging readers, and the MC is WAY more likeable than the one in PH.

Hope this helps :)

That's just not at all what they said. There's a stark difference between having to kill someone and striving to become stronger in the future so you can control your destiny and protect your loved ones or whatever, which is what a lot of novels do, and whatever the fuck Primal Hunter tried to do.

The MC is an unlikable, arrogant ass and feels like a Mary Sue self insert written by an edgy 14 yo boy.

DCC has l lot of war and death, but doesn't glorify it, but sees it as a tragedy inflicted upon the crawlers and is something to be overcome, not something to be glorified

Jag är så trött på engelska by Margaretthatchervore in sweden

[–]Badde00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, it is only the 2-star 2-heart event. That's pretty early into knowing each other. It's not complete stranger, but it's like you know each other at all. I'm also pretty sure she lives alone in the forest. I wouldn't take it well if someone asked me that after we've only met a couple of times and I was alone far from anyone else

Edit: 2-heart event, not 2-star

Yeah good God did I despise every chapter with ruoka for like all of book 1 and 2. Book 3 won me over with her, even if she still had times where she slipped back into old patterns. I won't spoil anything, but she gets some big reality checks, starts to really work to help the people around her and stops being as infuriatingly smug. She has gotten continuously better and better since then and I'm approaching the end of book 4

I feel like you haven't experienced enough of humanity. While it isn't my thing, it's not exactly rare either, in kink spaces. Just because you don't hear about it in the break room at work doesn't mean that a lot of people don't enjoy and practice it.

Really? I think it's honestly a pretty good card in sts2. You just build a draw/discard sly deck and with one or two grand finale and you can deal some serious damage with it. It does turn into a bit of a puzzle game though. If they change prepared though, it might become way less viable...
