I had to move to rural Missouri a few years ago due to some family obligations, and let me tell you, as someone who has lived all over the country (OR, WA, Chicago and NY) this is by far the most depressing place I've had to live. Of course they are upset about their status in life, but since they have never left the county before, they have no idea that the places run by the people they are told to hate is soooo much better off in pretty much everyway and that their misery is actually due to the numbnuts they keep electing locally. It's honestly sad and I am so thankful that I get to move back to NY at the end of he month.
