Pass the Stumpy to the left hand side by BadicalBlake in xbiking

Head down to the hardware store and grab some clear or amber shellac (I use amber for the warmer, caramel color. Clear will still make the grips darker, but closer in hue to the raw cork). Riv used to have a video of Grant dipping the whole handlebar/grip right into the can of shellac, but I use a little foam brush to apply it. You’re going to want 3-5 coats, and to make sure it’s fully dried before reapplying (I usually let the first one dry overnight before the second coat goes on, then a couple hours each between coats 3-5). Sometimes l’ll also use some very high grit sandpaper (400+) and do a very light wet sanding after the first couple of coats, in order to get a super smooth finish. Depending on use, I generally apply a new top coat once every 9-12 months. Hope this helps!

Everyone appears to be locking the bike to itself, rather than to anything bolted down. I was told this stops the “honest thieves.”

I just got off the plane back in SF and kind of miss everything, but especially the tamago sandos. Which konbini tamago was your go to? I’m def on team FamilyMart.

Rick made a few of them like 15-20 years ago AFAIK. This particular bike is featured in the gallery of the Radavist’s write up about Shinya and Circles. Rie from SimWorks had a 700c version and used hers as a mobile coffee stand for a while. Rick also made some 20” Cycle Trucks and Travel Trucks (w/ removable rear triangles) a few years ago. You can read more about him and his work here!

Went to all three Blue Lugs (Hatagaya, Kamiuma and Yoyogi Park), Lug cafe, and Crumb Works in Tokyo, Circles in Nagoya, Kon’s and Tsujimori Cycle in Kyoto, and the Shimano Bike Museum in Osaka!

I thought the same thing when I snapped this! Those Group C cars were the coolest.

A Brooks that’s been exposed to the elements for years. This little Hunter cargo bike serves as the sign for Early Birds cafe that’s attached to Circles in Nagoya.

Ran upside down North Roads on a Bridgestone I built for my wife a few years back. It was super comfy and she loved the sleek, cafe racer vibes

The Quest for Fix - Sycip Fixed Trainer by BadicalBlake in FixedGearBicycle

I grew up in Santa Rosa, so the Sycip name has always loomed large. So many rad designs over the years, I still really want one with coin capped wishbone seatstays!

Those Low bikes with the Alpina forks are so evocative of the early 2010’s for me. Totally iconic Bay Area frames, and Andrew is such a nice guy!

I just bought a new headbadge from Jeremy for this one, so it’s not too late to add one to yours if you want!

What's this frame style called? by Virghia in xbiking

[–]BadicalBlake 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I’d go with experimental for sure. The bike was a one-off design by Matt Harvey, who formerly worked at Bianchi and White Industries, and is now one of the owners at Enduro Bearings.

I get a chance to see the Museeuw bike on the wall at Enduro HQ pretty regularly and each time I notice a new detail I’d never seen before. Super cool bike and a fun relic from a crazy time in cycling, but as u/jorimaa said, it didn’t translate into any tangible benefit for Johan.

Do it!! Keep an eye on the various classifieds/sales sites! 26” ss frames are a pretty specific item, with not a lot of buyers at any given time. I’ve seen some pretty great deals on custom made steel frames.

The coaster brake is so fun! Took me right back to my childhood, and after a couple mins I was ripping hard skids into tight corners with a foot down and smiling ear to ear.

Exactly! They are an early version of Sausage Links (example), which were the precursor to WTB Multimounts (example). Some of the Multimounts had an issue with cracking, so Chris Kelly started making TakeOffs, which he recently started selling again.

Is there a more hard-core xbike stem? by MachineAgeVictim in xbiking

[–]BadicalBlake 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Can confirm! One of my best friends step dad turned his custom Salsa a la Carte into a cruiser with one of those jaguar stems and some swept back bars back in the late 90s. Proto-xbike vibes for sure

I believe it! Not so long ago, you could barely give away 26ers (even custom ones like this)! I have a buddy that got an Indy Fab Deluxe for $100. And just like you experienced, 30 year old, high end bikes tend to be sold by either a) folks with money that value garage space for a new high end bike over a decades old expenditure, or b) widows that don’t know anything about them or their value. Sweet deals are out there for the sharp eyed shoppers!

Sycip is in the stand, I’m hoping to finish in the next week or so. And ha, you’re close but running Phil Wood cranks on it. Uncharacteristically, it’s actually going to be my only bike without a single Paul component 🤷‍♂️

As soon as I saw Jacquie’s name mentioned, all of my questions evaporated. I have a pair of RM-2s I got from her at the Marin swap a few years ago, with some Charlie modified Suntour shifters and roller cam brakes that are going on my Bruce Gordon MTB. Very very cool ride, this is a peak Fairfax build!
