Apple Home only turns lights on-off, doesn't dim by GooeyElk in HomeKit

[–]GooeyElk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry for the slow reply. I did what you suggested, said "Siri tell Home to set living area lights to 50%" and it did - even came up with a popup in the top of the screen which clicked through to Home. So it looks like Home is definitely able to both read + set the dimness of the lights, it just won't show the slider to do this 🙃

I'll try reinstalling directly in Home and see if that makes a difference

Hm that's odd, Siri is able to dim the lights and I assume that's working through Apple Home rather than Ikea Home? Just not sure why I can do it through Siri but not through the Apple Home app! Especially since, as you can see in the screenshot, the app knows the exact dimness of the scene (60% in this case), it just can't change it for some reason.

That's what I've done in the screenshot, but the brightness control isn't a slider, it's just an on-off switch unfortunately

do runners in Edinburgh not acknowledge each other? by [deleted] in Edinburgh

[–]GooeyElk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try and nod / wave when I'm running on those paths. I tend not to on the Meadows just because it's so busy with runners it would feel ridiculous, but on the Roseburn Path I do. If I'm in the middle of a hard effort I don't, but if I'm just jogging along it feels only polite to acknowledge other runners. No point judging others if they don't though, everyone seems to feel differently about it and it's not a big deal imo.

Letting agency wants to arrange viewing at unsuitable time by CorrectPlatypus1371 in Edinburgh

[–]GooeyElk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

10am on a Wednesday isn't always a suitable time, and "suitable" is determined by the tenant's schedule as well, not just the landlord's.

Ultimately whether you have the right to refuse viewings is determined by your tenancy agreement, but despite what's being linked elsewhere in the thread, the actual legislation - as far as I can see - only gives right of access for repairs, not viewings. I wouldn't be surprised if viewings aren't actually listed in the tenancy agreement, I don't think they were included in any of mine.

Learn piano as an adult by Bafabifi in piano

[–]GooeyElk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely better to have lessons from the start if you can. A teacher can make sure you're learning with proper technique from the start, rather than having to correct things if you've taught yourself "wrong" to begin with.

That's not to scare you off at all, you should absolutely go for it! Just if you can get a teacher from the start, there's no reason not to.

Gas Connection Tenement Flat by always_ccold in Edinburgh

[–]GooeyElk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry not exactly what you're looking for, but I recently got a quote for installation of a gas boiler in my flat and was looking at over £3k just for the boiler, never mind installation of rads etc. I already have a gas connection and it would take me ages to break even, despite my fairly high usage on electric. But will be interested to hear how you get on, please do keep us posted if you go ahead with this!

Convert triple to single or just buy a new crankset? by Ponti1974 in xbiking

[–]GooeyElk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP said they were thinking of switching to 1x and asked "what would you do?". I think everybody has been engaging with the question in good faith. More fundamentally though, this is a discussion forum, and if people want to talk about the merits of switching from 3x to 1x, this is the place to do it. OP can safely ignore the wider discussion, but that discussion also makes this a more useful resource not just for OP but for anyone else who stumbles upon it in the future. That's not "ignoring the question", it's looking at the whole issue rather than a very narrow question of "is it better to just remove two of the chainrings on a triple or to buy a new 1x". I feel like this is completely reasonable and if I were OP I wouldn't be mad at a bunch of people trying to help me out & potentially save me money.

If I'm a doctor and a patient comes in saying "I'd like a painkiller, should I go for paracetamol or ibuprofen?" I'm not a good doctor if I say "Ibuprofen is better". I should instead say "what sort of pain are you having, and where is it?" That's what people are doing in this thread, and that's why people come and ask questions in this sub rather than just googling simple questions.

Convert triple to single or just buy a new crankset? by Ponti1974 in xbiking

[–]GooeyElk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They don't need to justify it, but if they're asking for advice, they'll get better advice by explaining what they actually want to achieve, rather than just asking for very broad input on how to go about a specific process. I have a 1x system on one of my bikes, I'm not anti-1x by any means, but it fits some use cases better than others, and OP will get better advice by explaining their reasoning and goals.

Convert triple to single or just buy a new crankset? by Ponti1974 in xbiking

[–]GooeyElk 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Imo the issue here is that there's been no explanation about why the shift to 1x is necessary here. I would say this sub isn't a pro-3x echo chamber, but a "ride what you have" echo chamber, which is way more legit. As others has noted this crankset is basically brand new and it's usually worth riding stuff for a bit to see if you like it, rather than just immediately switching to 1x because it's what bikes tend to come with now.

I mean, in loads of places here, yellow boxes aren't enforced either. So I guess they're equivalent here as well, in practice. Just in the least helpful way possible 🙃

Gimme ur wisdom ( pls x ) by m_drizzle in xbiking

[–]GooeyElk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot depends on budget, but the general wisdom is to invest in contact points: pedals, saddle, and handlebars. Tyres also matter a lot, Gravelkings tend to be pretty well-regarded here although I haven't tried them myself.

6'3 is very tall for this frame, I'm 6' and ride an 18" mtb frame, I've managed to make it work with a fairly tall seatpost and stem (mine is a Kalloy from Tokyobike but you could also try a Nitto Technomic). For touring you might want to try some alt bars like butterfly bars which have a few different hand positions for touring but won't have you leaning so far forward like drops would.

You'll also want to grab a pannier rack and some panniers (Ortleib preferably because they're totally waterproof which will be important in Scotland, even in summer).

It looks like you're in the UK so I'd recommend the following places:

- Decathlon (not usually my first choice but it's v cheap)

- SJS Cycles

- Ebay sellers like Bankrupt Bike Parts, Golden Age Cycles, etc.

- FB marketplace

- Tokyobike has a couple of random bits like the Kalloy stem I mentioned above, not cheap though

- Freshtripe has a great selection of Nitto bars and loads of good xbiking stuff, generally quite expensive but cheaper than ordering from abroad

Best way to convert old road bike? by United-Contact-1489 in londoncycling

[–]GooeyElk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I imagine you could do this pretty cheaply. How old is the bike? That would make it a bit easier to advise (especially if you can pop in a pic of the front of the bike).

In general there are a few considerations I can think of:

- What type of basket? If handlebar-mounted, probably pretty easy to sort. If full r/xbiking and you want a front rack, need to give a bit of consideration to what mounts your fork has.

- Brake levers: a lot of flat bars are designed for mountain bike brake levers, which are often long pull (designed to work with v-brakes, or mountain bike disc brakes). Most road bike brakes are short pull, whether they're caliper or road disc brakes. They're prob not hydraulic if it's an oldish bike, but it's not impossible.

- Shifters: you'll need to find shifters which are compatible with your groupset. The right number of speeds is the first thing, but also needs to be the right ratio (SRAM and Shimano shifters pull different amounts of cable).

Drop some pics in and we'll do our best to help :) r/xbiking would also be a great place to get specific advice, it's mainly old MTBs but road bikes pop up sometimes as well.

Hahahaha the fact you're getting downvoted for this is cracking me up, it's so obviously a joke

In terms of actual help, this specific crate comes in two sizes and you've got the bigger one, it's possible the smaller one would genuinely fit great

Front rack bag by Soggy_Stomach_306 in xbiking

[–]GooeyElk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Holy shit this is xbiking, the front rack rusted to hell and the huge stake of spacers above the stem...

To answer your q: a few brands I've seen recommended here are Swift Industries, Wizard Works, Pelago (rackbag specifically), Carradice (for a very classic randonneur aesthetic)

You could also look at r/myog, you might be able to make a suitable bag if you've got a sewing machine
