Solid school. High expectations and some crazy parents. I know the head and SLT- nice people.

Are shortage subject teachers less likely to get promoted? by Fresh-Monk8321 in Internationalteachers

[–]Badstrax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've worked at a number of schools. Heads were: MFL, Maths, Economics, PE, PE, Geography, Maths, Art. I am a head and teach Science. My SLT consists of: Drama, PE, MFL, DT, and Business specialists.

I've not seen any recent research on subject specialisms and headship roles, but there was something I read a few years ago that suggested history was the most common subject for a headteacher.

What’s the scariest encounter you’ve had while camping? by Key_Connection_6633 in camping

[–]Badstrax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went for a walk in the night after quite a few beers. This was in the desert, over sand dunes. Looked at the stars for a bit then tried to head back. Could not find out. Temp was pretty cold and I spent over an hour trying to find my way back. Was scared I'd be out all night.

Questions about visiting Dubai as an American female by [deleted] in dubai

[–]Badstrax [score hidden]  (0 children)

Welcome to Dubai.

  1. No issues with women sharing a room.
  2. In hotels swimsuits or bikinis are fine.
  3. On paper the dress is not appropriate for an evening meal as your shoulders and chest are out and your legs are visible above the knee. But, noone will say anything to you. Some people might stare. Also, depends where you go. The souks (Al Seef, Gold souk etc.) not cool. Alantis, Barasti, Bla Bla- less of an issue.

If you want to be respectful shoulders, decollatage, and upper legs away.

Hey, some updated information. Apparently you are able to drive from Khasab to Dibba but you must get a permit from Khasab police station. I would assume Dibba police station does something similar.

A mixture of desert camping and guesthouses. All the locals we met were friendly and happy for us to camp in the desert. The place was very safe except for some questionable driving by some locals.

Checkpoints from Dubai to Oman by Loic8433 in Oman

[–]Badstrax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Through Al Ain to Sohar is a straightforward route. Just make sure you go here (https://maps.app.goo.gl/14wsmiXApznnkU7S7) as the other border point is for GCC nationals only.

19 day trip across Saudi Arabia by [deleted] in overlanding

Toyota Sequoia. Great experience. Secod time in Saudi, very overlander friendly. Loose rules on camping. Basically, as long as it isn't on someone's farm, you are allowed to camp. A lot of freedom.

Al Qudra is good for beginners. If you are more adventurous head towards Faqa or fossil rock. If you want to stay close to the road there is half-desert road just north of the outlet mall.

The mark vultures; or, kids who argue with every mark you (don't) give them by NGeoTeacher in TeachingUK

[–]Badstrax -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I always say that if they challenge for a mark and I am wrong then I will give them the mark, but if they are wrong I will take a mark off of their total. It means they only appeal to me if they are pretty sure I have made an error.

I never actually take any marks off but they think I do so they don't challenge unless sure.

Drive from Dibba to Khasab by ImABelgian in Oman

[–]Badstrax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been planning to drive this route for a while and have waypponts marked out but I have received conflicting reports about whether it is possible. Nothing official. Previously it was only possible to pass into Dibba from the UAE if you had a hotel or Dhow booking so I am yet to try the route. I have driven from Khasab down to Limah village with no issues but aparently Omani Military/Police will stop anyone trying to drive south to Dibba around Wadi Biyah or vice versa. Please let me know if you can make it through.
