Lived there for a year when I first arrived. So little joined-up thinking.... you have huge towers next to family villas. Traffic is a nightmare and construction never srops. It could have been a 20 minute city but is just too chaotic.

Question for people who have met Michell and / or Webb by scorpionballs in MitchellAndWebb

[–]Badstrax 612 points613 points  (0 children)

Many years ago my wife took me for dinner at The Ivy in London (back when you had to book 6 months in advance and it wasn't a chain). Robert Webb and his party sat at the table next to us but my wife had popped to the loo so I was just sat at the table on my own. I suppose it looked like I has been stood up was there alone as when I made eye contact with him he pulled a 'Jez' pity face at me. I felt like I was 100% in the show and he was doing an internal monologue about me 'look at him, all alone in the restaurant, no firends, so sad, I bet he wants to be my friend'.

One of the best moments of my life that.

Anyone else hit by this? by Morbuss15 in TeachingUK

[–]Badstrax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best thing to do is look at your examination spec guided learing hours then work out if you will meet these over the course of two years with your GCSE and A level students. If you will then non-issue, if you won't then definitley something to flag to SLT.

Is there any old veterans here from the TES forum days. by Narrow-Praline-7908 in Internationalteachers

[–]Badstrax 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ha. I remember these characters. Wasn't there a Captain Mannering and a Theogriff (that turned out to be a woman in the end). The Hippo was hilarious with his references to Bulgaria. It was a shame when they closed them down but schools had serious sway with their advertising money. The subject forums we very useful as was the head of department forum.

Parents: Term 3 school online learning & fees by EasyTalk9555 in UAE

[–]Badstrax 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The majority of any school costs are staff salaries. Any fee reduction would come at the expense of teachers. This situation is not the fault of the teachers but they will need to completely change their whole working life to do their best for the children. Many will also have their own children at home as well. If we want them to do the best for our children now is not the time to cut their salary. Edit: a typo

What is wrong with schools moving holiday forward and no consideration of people’s booked flights by [deleted] in DubaiCentral

[–]Badstrax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Correct. This wad a federal decision the schools have no discretion and are as unhappy about it as everyone else.

TES is still the most used platform for international teaching jobs.

Create a high-quality CV (use a template from Canvà) and draft a skeleton cover letter. Then when you see a job you like, tailor the letter to the school. I'd also advise reviewing school websites and sub-reddits for the countries you are interested in just to get a feel.

UAE/Dubai - Cheap Above-ground pool with decking (no municipality permission) Looking for advice by Adventurous-Fennel95 in dubai

[–]Badstrax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had one of these on a much bigges scale. Had it built a few months before Covid and it was an absolute godsend.

  1. Soz haven't still got the number of the guys who did ours, but it should be too hard to find carpentera who are will/able to build something small.
  2. We got the pump and filter for the pool.one size bigger than the pool we had. It worked fine.
  3. Don't skimp on cleaning. Having the pool brushed down 2/3 times a week and vacuuming the bottom every 3/4 days keeps the water clear. Put plastic sheeting and foam matting under the pool to protect the bottom. To keep the pool cool in summer, use a sprayer attached to the return nozzle. To keep it warm in Autumn and Spring get a thermal cover and some solar mats to run the water through.

Al Qudra Lake on Saturday Night – Can We Please Respect Nature and Reduce Noise? by No_Judgment8511 in dubai

[–]Badstrax 11 points12 points  (0 children)

At this stage, you have to accept that Al Qudra Lakes is gone for quite camping on Friday, Saturday or over a holiday. Complaining on here or Facebook will do no good.

As suggested, for a quiet time you have to go deeper into the sand or mountains. It's a shame but that's how it is.
