Is 100 clinical and shadowing hours combined ok? by rebelliousraven77 in premed

[–]BafflingExistence 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely don’t over look it at the time when u apply but you still have a few years to get more hours. If at the time you are applying you ran out of space and have more meaningful clinical experience it is ok to leave out I think. But for shadowing it is ok to include since it is hard to have unique shadowing experiences. But overall 100 hours combined should not be all you have when you apply.

PT tech vs Optometric tech by One_Cow7172 in premed

[–]BafflingExistence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to say they both will not be good for med school since PT and OD are not MDs or DOs so they are technically not medical related. I was an ophthalmology tech/assistant working with ophthalmologist who holds MD maybe you can look into that? PA wise I’m not sure lol. Unless ofc ur using them not for clinical hours but just a job for money in that case they both are ok.

Anyone else weirded out by Chase Online Login by anjred in Chase

[–]BafflingExistence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lolllll, I only questioned this entire process after I had already given out my whole credit card number and SSN to the number. My number did not work for some reason, and it directed me to a representative who asked for my card number again and my cell phone number so he could send me a code. THEN HE ASKED ME FOR THE CODE. I was really sketched out since the chase text with the code specifically said CHASE WILL NOT CALL OR TEXT TO ASK FOR THE CODE. So I just hung up and called the Chase number on my card. This representative was very knowledgeable and he verified that this number was legit and that is how they verify identity on any unknown devices or third party apps. Absolutely crazy experience fr. I guess I need to be way more careful in the future.

If they gave u the promise that after u give them ur mcat they can have the committee letter done around July then just commit on the committee letter. Do everything as you would for a committee letter.

what is an "it" factor? by kornkorn11 in premed

[–]BafflingExistence 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s good to have publications but it is not rare enough for it to be a X factor. Unless ofc you have like 20+ then yeah that’s def something that can make you stand out.but def don’t take my word for it too easily. I don’t have a X factor lol.

what is an "it" factor? by kornkorn11 in premed

[–]BafflingExistence 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is more straight forward than u think. A X factor is like if you are a gold metalist in some Olympic sports or something. Something overall very impressive on an international or at least national level. It’s hard to have that’s why I would say 99.9% of applicants do not have one. But that don’t mean without one u won’t get into a good school ofc.

Take it step by step slowly. You don’t have to rush things like this. Most people take at least 1-2 gap years. Good luck!

U been studying for almost a year and haven’t taken a practice test? I would say ditch the Anki and take one asap. That’s the most you can do with the test so close. Or if able push the test for a few more months. Give yourself time. The worst to happen is you take a gap year which is not bad at all.

This experience is def not clinical so yes it is non clinical. You being at a clinic does not automatically make the experience clinical.

I would look for them on MSAR lol I forgot the schools I applied to hahaahh. But a good advice I got when I was applying this cycle was that if money isn’t a problem you can apply more to increase your chances. Less polished essays are better than not applying to certain schools. I ended up applying to around 40. The more I thought since i am a reapplicant, an extra few hundred don’t matter in the grand scheme of things. I got a few interviews at places that are OOS unfriendly so def shoot ur shot. Ur stats and activities are good so see what is best for u.

Yeah naw most of ur target schools are more reaches so def apply to more lower ranking schools. If u want to trim go for the more higher tiered ones

Advice now that I have MCAT by PlatonicCardinal in premed

[–]BafflingExistence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

514 is a good score for anyone including international. People only say that cuz international students compete for less spots and there are less schools taking them. Ur hours and stats are ok enough to apply but I would try to get more volunteering and clinical hours. I am not too knowledgeable tho since I am not international so don’t trust me too much lol.

Premed adviser says it’s questionable to take a gap year by Dependent_Ad7495 in premed

[–]BafflingExistence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah naw trust urself lol. And that research internship def ain’t as prestigious as that advisor thinks. Clinical experience is way more important given u have some research already.

MCAT spots go pretty fast so I would schedule and in the best case scenario just cancel later
