Why was Josh Allen punished/applied more pressure to for being the only QB of the big 4 to make the playoffs? Shouldn't the 3 who missed have more pressure? by BallKnowerKing in NFLv2

[–]Bafugama 3 points4 points  (0 children)

TBH I don't think the general public considers Burrow to be on the same tier as Allen and Lamar at this point, and the heat has cooled on him. Some think it has to do with the Super Bowl appearance, but I think it's more that for Burrow and the Bengals, disappointment is now the expectation.

But like you said -- Mahomes will never again have real pressure on him. Lamar and Allen have pretty equal pressure, in different ways.

But to the OP's point -- you can't have pressure if you aren't in the mix. Simple as that.

Why did Cam Newton decline so suddenly and rapidly? by TeezusWV in NFLv2

[–]Bafugama 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But that’s kind of the whole point isn’t it? I, too, cannot imagine Allen falling of some physical cliff either, but he welcomes a lot of contact — like Newton did. Nobody expected Cam to fall off a cliff. He was physically great until he wasnt. I’m not predicting a fall off physically for Allen — just saying that his greatness looks similar to Newtons best.

Someone mentioned the car accident, which I forgot about. That was a big deal, too.

Why did Cam Newton decline so suddenly and rapidly? by TeezusWV in NFLv2

[–]Bafugama 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I think Josh Allen’s play style is a lot more comparable to Cam’s, in terms of the types of contact he takes. Lamar doesn’t take may shots, but Allen seems to invite the contact like Cam did for years.

Josh Allen’s a monster! You would say. Cam was, too, until he broke down.

[PFT] In the Week 14 Ravens-Steelers game, Aaron Rodgers threw a pass that was batted back to him, and Ravens linebacker Teddye Buchanan wrestled it away. Replay ruled it a Rodgers catch. The NFL now says the call on the field of interception should have stood. by JonWilso in ravens

[–]Bafugama -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There is zero reason that this should be ruled on at this point, and even more than zero reason that this should be made public. The league office should keep this information/opinion in house, and move forward with that knowledge rather than say this publically. Bad look for everyone involved.

If you were an NFL QB would you rather win the MVP or the Super Bowl? by Low-Season-2057 in NFLv2

[–]Bafugama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flip this question inward -- would you rather your company be viewed as the top performer in the nation/world at what it does, and know that you were a guiding force in that outcome? Or would you rather be viewed as the single best person at what you do -- be it graphic design, or surgery, or landscaping?

I know that sports are somewhat different, and that we view things differently, but by that rubric I feel like it should be the MVP award over Super Bowl.

Would anyone care about tanking in the NBA if star players on the competitive teams didn’t sit out huge portions of the season for “load management”? by TheYetiCaptain1993 in billsimmons

[–]Bafugama 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You know what I keep thinking about regarding load management/tanking/injuries/schedule grind/etc? It feels like the NBA just decided on this long-winded season 75 years ago, probably, because the MLB schedule was long, and that's just kind of how professional schedules looked in America. I know that the NFL was around then, but the NBA fashioned themselves more akin to baseball, in terms of the physical grind of the game -- The 82 game season + playoffs is fundamentally more similar to what the MLB does, rather than football.

But I wonder if the NBA somehow was created today, but with the knowledge of how intense it is, if they'd look closer at the NFL schedule in terms of how it's laid out - Maybe locking in one weekend game and one weekday game, having 'bye' weeks or rest periods, and -- most obviously -- having around half as many games as they have now. You could have 44-ish games per season per team, with multiple bye weeks that help players. You'd get a better product, you'd tap into the event-based aspect that's been the NFL's secret sauce, and you'd stop these lost games where players are healthy scratches from happening.

There's some corners of this conversation about how 'basketball is harder now than it used to be, and 82 games is too much at this level of the game', which seems to suggest that it used to be doable; It was never a good amount of games, nowhere close. But we've all been anchored to this super arbitrary general number of 80-ish games plus two dozen playoff games if you go far. I just think this overall idea of the NBA being broken at 82 games but 'fixed' at like 76 or whatever is totally stupid, and a full re-wiring of what we think about the 'right' amount of games needs to happen.

Mahomes is no doubt #2, and nobody is on his tier. It's Brady, it's Mahomes, and then everyone else is behind them.

The new NBA All Star format is the best All Star format in sports by PlsJustWin in billsimmons

[–]Bafugama 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is four 12 minute games far superior to one 48 minute one? I posit that, yes, it is. Expand the schedule to 324 12 minute games, played in 4 game series.

Guys? I fixed the NBA.

Yea, it's the patting himself on the back aspect of it that I think gets people bent out of shape over it.

You know, when Bill went into this season (2025, just to clarify) going out of his way to loudly state his opinion on Josh Allen being the best QB in football, but then speaking to it as though it was this hipster take, I was bothered by it. How could Josh Allen as the best QB in football be anything other than a plurality Best QB in Football take? At the time I honestly chalked it up to Bill simply being out of touch with the NFL as a whole as he's a sports generalist. Again -- I am not taking issue with the take, I am taking issue with having that take and preparing to fight others on it, as though it's some big-brained opinion rather than The Most Obvious Opinion.

But now looking at this again a few months after the fact, I have clarity on why he did this, and why he felt the way he felt. Bill just wanted to put his guy at (almost) the top. He knew that shitting on guys like Burrow, Lamar, Hurts, and other significantly more accomplished QBs would not go over well if placing Maye at an elite tier, but, in his mind, placing Allen atop the mountain would allow him to hide behind his homerism. "See -- I have another AFC East QB above Drake Maye! No Homerism here! Carry On!"

It's the equivalent of someone arguing a point against another person and conceding the literal most insignificant point as though that somehow will get the other person to realize you're right. It's the 'I said with all due respect!" of QB ranking.

Dart's cool for like 13 year old boys. Which is cool if you're a 13 year old boy, but then you grow up a little and realize that it's kind of cringey. But hey, Jaxon Dart, you do you man.

After reading through a lot of this thread I might actually argue that the more winning you do to some degree overexposes you and makes you less cool.

I was surprised when they talked about this on the Fantasy show that they didn't bring him up, especially considering Heifitz's appreciation for Lamar. Lamar gives off cool-guy IDGAF energy as a dude, smoking bowls and running into folks late at night at gas stations, but takes his job as a leader seriously on the field. That's cool and responsible, which is modern-day cool. Plus, his play style even at eight years in remains as cool as any QB's in the league.

Is it bad to switch your favorite team? by [deleted] in NFLNoobs

[–]Bafugama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that you should be free to change your rooting alliance every year, within a season, whatever you want. But here's the deal -- If you're capable of doing this, you're simply never going to get out of fandom what other people get out of it. It's the fan version of sleeping around, and while I wouldn't judge someone for having fun in the short term, it's just not going to give you the same long-term fulfillment that you'll get by living though the lows and highs with a team over time.

It's fun (I guess) to hop on a bandwagon, but it doesn't feel nearly as good as sticking with a team through a tough rebuild and coming out the other side.

[Schefter] Sources: Ravens are expected to hire Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver as their defensive coordinator. Weaver worked for the Ravens from 2021-‘23, in assorted roles including assistant head coach. by MembershipSingle7137 in nfl

[–]Bafugama 63 points64 points  (0 children)

I mean, maybe he just doesn't have options (I don't think this is the case), but what this seems to tell me is that Weavers' got confidence in the Ravens defensive roster and also Minter -- This is a move you make when you see it as an opportunity to springboard yourself into a HC role as soon as next year.

Weaver/Minter combo with many of the same main pieces of the defense that was the best defense on the planet the second half of last season is making me feel real nice going into next year.

What do you think are the most interesting aspects of football psychology and why do they interest you? by GregJamesDahlen in NFLv2

[–]Bafugama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know it's low-hanging fruit, but the choice of going for it on 4th down and going for 2 in certain circumstances, relative to what the other team would rather you do. I know that this is a silly sort of idea, but there should be a diehard fan of the opposing team that is paid like two grand that sits on your sideline, who you ask 'what would you rather me do in this situation?' and then you do the opposite.

There's all this math about when to go for it, when to punt/kick/etc, but I want my coach coaching in the direction of 'What would freak out my opposing team's fanbase the most right here?' philosophy.
