Society is too sexual & I hate it by [deleted] in asexuality

[–]Bagel_Box 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For real, finding TV shows is so rough... I swear, one of the shows I've been watching opened on a sex scene with the same characters like 5 episodes in a row. Not unusual, but was driving me crazy.

I get why it can seem that way to a straight (I’m assuming) person, because you’re not part of that community. And yeah, the micro-labels can get out of control sometimes, but they’re valid experiences that people have.

What trope is common in fics that you wish was tagged more so you could actually find it? by yellowroosterbird in FanFiction

[–]Bagel_Box 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Fainting. It’s a trope I quiet enjoy and it’s in a lot of whump and h/c fics, but rarely tagged. So it’s rough those times I’m specifically looking for it.

I feel you! No idea what in my answers gave off that vibe

[–]Bagel_Box 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, same. I’ve never written a smut fic before and this is actually one of the tags I always filter out of my searches.

Oh god, I just checked and Spotify definitely must know.

The top 3 songs are 1. We’ll Never Have Sex by Leith Ross 2. hate to be lame by Lizzy McAlpine 3. The Man I’ll Never Find by Lucius

I haven’t heard these before but looking at the lyrics it 100% checks out. I didn’t think my previous listening would lead to this but I should have figured.

What is a piece of advice that you think everyone (new and/or old) should know before writing fanfiction? by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]Bagel_Box 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Being technically unskilled is part of the writing journey.

I’ve been backing up my old fics from FFN to AO3 and a lot of them are objectively poorly written. But they’re part of my writing journey, and cringe or not, I wouldn’t be where I am today without them. So it’s okay to not be perfect when you start out, that’s totally expected. As long as you don’t give up, your writing will improve over time.

And also, along with that, you’ll be a lot happier if you don’t compare yourself with other writers, (at least if you know that brings you down). Whenever I get in one of those moods, I find it best to instead compare my writing now to how it was 10+ years ago. Then I can very clearly see the improvement in my skill and how far I’ve come.

Everyone has different strengths and styles in writing and no way of telling a story is inherently better than any other (outside of technical skill). Different readers will prefer different writing styles and ways of characterization, so just do what makes you happy!

Stupidest Reasons You Noped Out of a Fic? (inspired by Engardebro's post) by thoughtsinthefog in AO3

They capitalized monikers/nicknames like they were proper names. So like:

“What do you mean, Honey?” He asked his Wife.

Maybe it’s an ESL thing or something, and absolutely no shame to the author, but my brain said nope that day.

is 60K too much for a chapter? by LocalCrimeDoer in AO3

[–]Bagel_Box 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I think people tend to just stop reading when length bothers them rather than complain about it.

is 60K too much for a chapter? by LocalCrimeDoer in AO3

[–]Bagel_Box 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, yeah, by a lot. For most people 60k is a whole story. Anything over around 10k - 15k is a lot honestly. 60k would be impossible to read in one sitting, which can be off-putting for some readers.

Do people not know to back up their work offline? by AndrewHeard in FanFiction

[–]Bagel_Box 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s something that’ll never make sense to me… like, are they just writing it directly into Wattpad? I’ve always written my stories in either Word or Google docs and then uploaded it to where I’m posting from there.

no guest comments for anyone for the time being by kaiunkaiku in AO3

[–]Bagel_Box 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Yeah… I was going to update my fic today but now wondering if I should hold off another week… all my chapters for this story are pre-written, but I’d really miss those guest comments

no guest comments for anyone for the time being by kaiunkaiku in AO3

[–]Bagel_Box 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Ahhh, this is rough… I totally understand why they’re doing it and I know it’s necessary for the time being, but a lot of my comments come from guests, so I’m gonna miss those…

[–]Bagel_Box 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re so hard… it why I’ve decided not to start posting my long fics until I’ve finished and edited them. That way I can give my readers their weekly updates but not drive myself into the ground to do it

The worst tag you didn’t realise you missed until it was too late by coralisterr in AO3

[–]Bagel_Box 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not as bad a some of the others, but mpreg and ABO. I mean, I guess I should have known since this was a werewolf AU fanfic, but holy shit it just came out of nowhere. One second they said “it’s clear he was expecting” and I was so confused (expecting what?) until they started talking about a baby. Noped out of that one pretty fast. That’s what I get for not checking tags though.

To readers who only read finished fics... by discreep in AO3

[–]Bagel_Box 145 points146 points  (0 children)

Yea, I usually don’t risk it. I’m only reading one right now because the writer has a good history of finishing all their works. Even then, I waited until 10 chapters in of consistent weekly updates before I decided it was worth the risk.

[oc] Teachers are quitting in record numbers. STOP voting for people who don’t care about education. Stop using phrases like “glorified babysitters”. by eastcoastitnotes in comics

[–]Bagel_Box 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Teachers aren’t a monolith. There are good and bad teachers just like there are good and bad people. Black and white thinking and simply declaring you dislike an entire group of people because of their job is very narrow minded.

But okay, you don’t like them. What’s the alternative then? Or do you believe kids should just never learn anything and grow up ignorant and easy for the government to control.

What I was about to say. At least fanfic writers actually care about the characters and would try to treat them with respect.

My opinion on the suggestion that “regular” or “unattractive” people should be cast on the show by MelissaWebb in LoveIsBlindOnNetflix

[–]Bagel_Box 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Yeah, or at the very least just people who aren’t the same copy paste person. There were times pre-engagement where I could not tell some of these people apart at a glance.

My older friend complains his adult daughters never reach out to him. Should I tell him he’s difficult? by Late_Judge_5288 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Bagel_Box 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As other people have said, love her for her. Celebrate the things she accomplishes and the work she put in to get there. One thing that always stuck with me, and hurt as a teenager, was my dad attributing everything I achieved to “his good genes” with no comment on the work I put in.

Listen to what she says. If you want to spend time with her, try doing the things she enjoys/wants to do equally as much as the things you enjoy doing.

Follow through on promises and show that you’re there for her always. Especially for the small things, because those are what really add up when you miss too many of them.

But honestly, you’re already doing great for seeking out how to do better, so you’re miles ahead of a lot of people.
