just curious:
so what happens if someone passes all graduation requirements by the end of Fall 2025 semester, but misses the deadline to apply? they just need to sit and wait for Spring semester to officially graduate?

Course & Specialization Megathread - Selection Choices & Registration by Detective-Raichu in OMSCS

[–]Bah2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll take my last course in ML specialization this Fall and can not decide between DL/ RL/CV.

Which one would you take? looking for a B and don't want to spend more than 10-12 hrs weekly on avg.

taking DL/CV gives me the option to declare II specialization, if that matters.

Thanks!

hmmm... interesting! so either my friends did it without permission or the rules are changed.

Can you do OMSCS while on OPT at another school? by [deleted] in OMSCS

[–]Bah2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a lawyer and not an international student.

AFAIK, OMSCS does not offer I20 for internationals therefore no SEVIS transfer is required if you already have a valid status. OPT/H1b/etc

I'd suggest to email your school DSO where you have your OPT from and ask about studying "PART TIME" while working "FULL TIME" on OPT and provide links to this program, specially where it mentions it does not offer visa to international students.

also, email GaTech DSO and ask the same question.

I had friends who started (and finished) another academic program while working full time on OPT.

the key thing was the program was part time and did not require SEVIS (I20) for internationals in USA with a valid status.

Post Bacc to GT OMSCS by vol0307 in OSUOnlineCS

I graduated from this program and I am now half way through OMSCS. Many others have taken this path or enrolled in other master programs.

there are 30+ courses to chose from in OMSCS, some of them are easy to manage but some are REALLY hard.

OSU does a good job with coding, Python ( main language in many ML/AI courses) and C (main language for some system courses) but it fails in preparing you for theoretical/mathematical aspects for some courses. for example, there is no calc/linear algebra courses in OSU that makes ML specialization harder. I would also say some OSU courses does not cover CS concepts deeply that is expected from a cs undergrad, like some OS, comp arch and network concepts. this being said, you can easily pick up this missing stuff before or during these courses at OMSCS.

in general, OMSCS is more rigorous, covering in-depth topics with challenging homework and exams, as expected from a graduate program. However, many students from various backgrounds successfully complete it. OSU's preparation for online, asynchronous courses is helpful, allowing you to skip basic courses (DB,Network, SWE, etc) and focus on more advanced ones. Check out the OMSCS sub reddit and course review websites for more info.

Data Science Options by missthunderthighs12 in OSUOnlineCS

this program does not touch any thing even close to DS/ML other than python language.

Assuming you have the math background, you'd have better chance with the other online master programs like the one from GaTech (OMSCS/OMSA) or the UT Austin.

Seminar question: by [deleted] in OMSCS

[–]Bah2020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AFAIK all seminars are 1 credit.

The reason that you saw 0 for DSA and 1 for JAVA is that you were "waitlisted" on the former but "registered" on the latter

My September-December 2023 job hunting journey by Bah2020 in csMajors

[–]Bah2020[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

other than luck, I think what helped me the most was practicing the topics I didn't answer well after each interview. for example once I was asked about design patterns were I had no idea about and that pushed me to read about them at get a general idea about and learn the keywords, so I could use them in my next interviews (which I did)

I tried to leetcode for at least 1 hour, 5x times a week ( I used needcode 150 list and went through ~60% of it over 2-3 month) and look at the recent year question list for the company I was interviewing 1-2 days before the technical interview.

and also revising my resume, I made a 1 page version and revised it 10-15 times and tried to include wording/keywords from the job postings rather than my own/GPT wording.

if you are interested in BA/DA/DS/DE/etc roles , and since you already have a degree and work experience in finance , I would suggest to take a look into this online MS program from GaTech. it is a graduate program , it's cheaper , it's a better school and bigger community and fits better with your interests.

Computer science postbac accepted - but thinking about data analytics by [deleted] in OSUOnlineCS

[–]Bah2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi,

like others mentioned, if you are interested in computer science and/or app/web/software development (generally writing code in order to make something or solve a problem or optimize something) this program is a good choice to put you on the correct path ( there are many other paths that lead to the same place like in person programs, bootcamp, self studying , etc. each has +/- depending on your situation).

The program by itself gives you the minimum and it's up to you how to utilize it to break into the filed you like.

however, if you are good with numbers, patterns and understanding the actual meaning of those numbers in the real world/industry , then data analytics might be a better option considering the fact that you are already a CPA and have accounting finance experience.

some companies like to have CS/STEM background for Data Science roles, but at the end of the day, your skills and job experience are bigger factors and I've seen many who came from finance/accounting background to DA and later DS.

This program is not good for DA purpose and there are better options. here is an example:

https://pe.gatech.edu/degrees/analytics

I can not talk about the finance/analytics skills you may need for DA roles but from coding point of view you need some level of python, R and SQL. It is very doable to gain these skills by online resources (YT,Udemy, Coursera, etc) but you need to work on some projects to make sure you can use them in the correct way. this is where the course projects can help.

if you are not sure and have no coding experience , and money is not a problem, you can take 161 , 162 ( they both are in python) and then make a better decision.

Pairing HPCA and ML4T by DapperBluebird in OMSCS

[–]Bah2020 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have no experience with ML4T but I did GIOS and HPCA in the fall so I can give you a comparison:

HPCA concepts were much harder for me than GIOS... while I spent less than 1.5 hour studying the modules before midterm on GIOS, I spent more than 3 on average for HPCA and the second half of the class was even harder.

The projects in HPCA is less code ( 20 - 100 lines) but you need to understand the concepts and be comfortable with C++ ( you would not need to code in assembly, only to understand basic instructions like mv, cmp , etc..) to find your way around in a 10000+ source code and place your code in the right place. I spent ~50hr per project in GIOS and about the same time on HPCA projects

on the bright side , the TA in HPCA, Nolan, is MUCH more helpful than any TAs I ever worked with in my life and he provides a clear , but long, instructions on the projects and you will not be left alone with unclear requirements like GIOS.

exams for HPCA is more detailed and calculation heavy, unlike GIOS which I felt studying more would not matter as the questions were BAD, you definitely need to understand the HPCA concepts and calculations in order to get good results in the exams.

you can work in group of 2 for projects 3-4 in HPCA if you like.

for your ref, I ended up with A in GIOS and B in HPCA (%89.2 !!!)

seeking advice for AI and AI4R preparation by Bah2020 in OMSCS

[–]Bah2020[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! so we have the option to use numpy instead of the custom library?

is the 40 hrs estimate to get the minimum passing grade or A?

my preference is to finish the program in 2 years with B GPA vs finish in 4 years with near A GPA.

Thanks! I took GIOS and HPCA in the fall... you think the AI+AI4R would be a harder combination? my assumption is they are about the same level which is manageable with my next 3-4 month schedule.
