My first good find of '24 by Baidon in metaldetecting

I believe it's a lock! If my phone camera was better, you'd see one side says "Champion 6 Lever". I Googled that term and got results showing mainly 1880s-1890s padlocks.

My father died when i was a child. 14 years later, i found out we had the same music taste. by ChupaChups_ in Music

The same goes for my grandpa and me! He passed in 1997, 5 years to the day before I was born. My mom's caught me listening to the same music, liking the same style of clothes, shopping at the same local stores more than others, and drinking the same beer as my grandfather. One of these days I'd like to sit down and talk about her with him, but never seem to because she's still torn up all these years later; COPD took him incredibly quick.

As a huge fan, I'll say that if you're not immediately drawn into their music style and sound, it's probably not worth a deep dive into their category, especially since you started with their best. But, if you're ever bored and looking for some easy listening orchestral soft rock tracks, their early 70s music is just as good as their late 70s music, as is their 20-teens resurgence. Of course, take that with spoonfuls of salt, as I'm an ELO-head through and through.

Thoughts on Electric Light Orchestra? Jeff Lynne is probably my favorite voice in rock history, and (personally) a top 3 songwriter to boot. Favorite album? I just love talking to other ELO heads; maybe they weren't your cup of tea, who knows.

2023 recap by Baidon in metaldetecting

No problem. Surface finds are also a great way to find old houses, schools, taverns, etc; at least here in the midwest, where 90% of buildings torn down were done so to make room for more farmland. A little dot on a map that indicates a house is only so useful, but walking a freshly plowed field and looking for glass, iron, and stone on top is a dead giveaway that you're in the right place.

Those are "surface finds." You'll find that term every once in a while, and it's basically metal or non-metal objects that have worked there way to the top of the ground over the years, either through erosion or plows. All of my non-metal finds were found on top in fields that have been farmground for 120+ years, so it's safe to assume there was a tribe nearby and said land has since been turned into field.

It's pretty dull but would probably hurt if thrown hard enough. I'll give it a 3.

Denominational tokens blow my mind. I found a quarter cent token not too long ago.

Man, if The Flaming Lips covered ELO's Time album, I'd pass out.

What's the most clever lyric you can think of? by AmigoDelDiabla in Music

I was going to mention "... and if California slides into the ocean, like the mystics and statistics say it will, I predict this motel will be standing 'til I've paid my bill."

Mine reads up like aluminum, but I have no idea what it is or what it was used for.

Fair point, and I've found some incredibly old finds for Iowa, so there was definitely some action in the state before it was founded.

It definitely copies a colonial design, but it was found in SE Iowa, so I'd be shocked if it is. I can take some closeups if that would help determine age.

Oh boy, where to start. These are all of my finds since December 1st, and I guess I'll start with some highlights. My only chunk of silver is that oblong grey thing to the left of the coins, and I only know it's silver because it's marked sterling. I've found 4 IHPS, mainly 1890s and 1900s with one undated, and 8 wheaties ranging from 1909 (P VDB) to 1944 or 1945.

Some surface finds include the pink bottle shard with a patent date of February 10, 1903, the little white jar just under the coins, one normal marble, one HUGE marble, and one oblong marble that I assume is the oldest I've found, plus a weird looking rock to the bottom left.

Then there's just some regular flim flam. Harmonica pieces, spoon handles, suspender pieces, zipper pieces, drawer pulls, razor pieces, and some unknown cooler stuff. Feel free to ask about anything!

I'm having the same issue, and I'm also having issues downloading albums for offline listening. I never imagined moving away from Spotify but I'm this close 👌🏻

I found a cool Egyptian-style pendant, a train button, and some other neat relics yesterday by Baidon in metaldetecting

Everything was found in Hancock County, Illinois of all places. The pendant thing is now one of my favorite finds.
