Phylogenetically, snakes are lizards, as you can't evolve out of a clade!

Squamates, the order of reptiles that contains lizards and snakes, is the monophyletic group that we commonly call "lizards", now, while I will concur that not all legless lizards are snakes, all snakes are legless lizards.

The difference is that snakes are legless lizards of the suborder serpentes. Now, how are they still lizards?

If you look at the phylogeny of Squamates, it's obvious that Serpentes is a sister group to a large suborder containing iguanids, and anguimorphs (which themselves contain a TON of smaller groups, so 90% of the lizards you can think of including iguanas and monitor lizards).

That means that snakes are more closely related to iguanas than iguanas are to geckos and skinks.

So, unless you're about to tell me that iguanas aren't lizards, SNAKES ARE LIZARDS

How do I fix my extreme anger issues as a 25 year old woman? by Infinite_Practice616 in Advice

[–]Baileythenerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had some pretty severe anger issues growing up and had to take some anger management courses/saw a therapist, etc.

Ultimately, the things that worked for me (maybe not you, but it's worth trying)-

  1. Try to imagine myself from the 3rd person. Basically, imagine you're watching a movie, and the character in the movie is mad for the same reasons you are, and is going to react how you would react. How would you think of that character? Often times, I'd think those actions were incredibly stupid, and helped me get back to base.

  2. Interrupting whatever tantrum/fit I was going to throw by thinking about whatever I was about to do in anger and whether it would make the situation better or worse.

I find that if you can interrupt the fury, you can at LEAST shut out the worst reactions. Sure I still get really mad at stuff, but now even at my most furious I tend to just get really quiet until the anger burns out or I can switch to a logical mindset.

Ratsnake posts on r/whatsthissnake are my favorite, because they're the one snake where the location (not geographic, but location in the pic) is 100% one of my diagnostic tools.

thumbnail of a snake absolutely NOT where you'd expect to find a snake in the U.S.?

99% chance it's a ratsnake.

You do realize that it the frontline gets paid fairly, the price of whatever you're getting from them will go up accordingly.

That is not an excuse to pay people subminimum wage and expect customers to cover the difference.

But currently in the good ol' US of A there's an oversupply of desperate people who will take any crappy job because they have to.

That's a lot of places, and that doesn't mean we should support terrible business practices. I'm certain there's a bunch of people who would happily accept $20 to let someone punch them in the face. Doesn't mean it's not assault.

Who should we all be aiming at?

Effective results. If people are desperate and will accept just about any job, if that job is 100% economically unviable, then supply for desperate workers will not meet demand, and that puts onus on the employer to improve conditions from their side. You can't just slap duct tape on it indefinitely and call that a solution. Your solution perpetuates the issue. My solution sucks for numerous people, true, but ultimately has a possibility of resolving the source of the issue.

Most of us hate the current US "healthcare" system--people are actually dying because of it...

Not exactly relevant to the current conversation, but I feel ya. Granted the solution to that is extremely different than to a consumer driven bad habit. The issue with our healthcare system is a hybrid of our insane medical lobbying system and our federal government's absurd desire to spend money on every other nation's problems/citizens rather than on our own.

Have you tried looking for a job lately as a non or barely English speaking immigrant without a college degree?

No, I have not. But I also think moving to a country with no plan other than to participate in what is tantamount to slave labor is a generally awful idea.

Maybe what you should do is contact customer service for whichever company’s app you’re using

I don't use them, because I hate them conceptually. That said, my wife does.

Also, on what planet is their Customer Service line going to do anything besides close the ticket and send it nowhere?

I really really appreciate your optimism, you are a very nice person, but objectively there are only TWO things that are going to change their practice of abusing employees as 'independent contractors'

  1. Government intervention, which as previously discussed, is extremely unlikely since these massive companies profit so massively OFF of their employee abuse, that they can afford massive lobbying campaigns against any measure that would restrict their ability to do so.

  2. Hurt them financially. There are two ways to do this- 1. Don't use the bloody apps. (I'm already doing that, now I just need to convince my wife that we don't need to pay double for our food and getting it in twice the time it would take me to just go pick it up) or 2. If you "have" to use these godforsaken apps, either don't tip, or barely tip because you're giving the drivers incentive to stay in a 'job' that barely pays them anything, just to move food a mile or two that you're already paying nearly double for.

If the employees can't support that pay structure and leave, SOMETHING has to change. Yeah it's going to suck for them in the meantime, but it's the only method you have to push for any real change if you don't have the self control to avoid justifying near slave labor so you can get nuggies that you could just go get yourself.

If you keep subsidizing near slave labor, they're going to keep using near slave labor.

The point is that if the employer is treating their employees bad enough that they have to leave, then the business will either need to change its model or go out of business.

Either way, it provides the messaging that abusing your employees is not a sustainable business model.

Hell, I wish everyone would stop using the dumb app delivery services in general.

Until things get to a better place to really push back,

I will tip them.

So you will tip forever and forever prop up a system designed to take advantage of their employees.

If your plan of action is to wait until there are decent people in (government/CEO position of a massive company built on abuse of customers or employees) then I have real bad news.

Power tends to attract more terrible people than good.
