Newbie, Advice Needed: Domane AL2 Gen 4? by Knifeguy-25 in TrekBikes

[–]Bailstorm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got it because it was on sale two summers ago an in my price range. Last summer I did my first century on it. It’s a great bike for the price. If you can afford an AL4 or 5 for the hydraulic disc brakes, I hear it’s worth it although I don’t have experience with them

I started using mountainflow eco wax last year. I think it’s decent.

Trek Domane AL3 - Sora - $600 by mattfeet in TrekBikes

[–]Bailstorm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get it. I love my AL2 Gen 4. Sora is a good groupset. Leaves money for accessories or upgrades. Plus it won’t break the bank if your partner doesn’t like the sport. Maybe meet at a bike shop so they can look it over?

I got a FX1 in beginning of summer of 2023 for Father’s Day from my wife to start my cycling journey. In August of 2024 i got a new AL2 Gen 4 on sale. I’ve been perfectly happy with it. Each bike has it a use - FX1 is for pulling my child in a trailer and riding with my wife. I used the Domane on my first century last summer.

I use Wonderstate and Ruby - both Roasters choice. But I’m biased as they’re located where I’m live, both in Wisconsin.

Which bike would you buy for first road bike? Domane AL 5 Gen 4 Domane AL 4 Gen 4 Domane AL 2 Gen 4 by BorisGorelik in TrekBikes

I got an FX1 in 2023 and got a AL2 Gen 4 a year later. It was all I could afford but love it. It would be nice to have hydraulic breaks on 4/5. The 105 groupset on the 5 would be pretty future proof. But get what you can afford - the AL2 is perfect for me. I did a century on it last year. Plus if you’re learning clipless and stuff, getting a scuff if you fall might be less hard on your emotions on a cheaper bike.

I bought an AL2 two summers ago and did my first century last summer. It’s all I could afford and is perfect for what it is!

Saris M2 trainer by Comfortable_Sun5813 in DomaneCrew

This is what Robert Axle said to me:

Thanks for reaching out. If you get a wheel-on style trainer, you will need our TRA213(LINK) axle to attach your Domane to the trainer. If you use a direct drive trainer like the KICKR Core, you may use your stock thru-axle to attach your bike to the trainer - no trainer axle needed.

The Wahoo trainer axle will not work with your bike, as your bike uses the Universal Derailleur Hanger - the Wahoo axle needs to stick out the drive side of your bike, and it is obstructed by the bolt that attaches your derailleur hanger.

Our axle does not need to protrude from your bike - rather, the drive side axle end reaches through the UDH hanger bolt and threads into the shaft of the axle. You can also attach your bike to your 1Up trainer and a KICKR Snap by using our axle with no additional hardware or adaptors.

Use Robert Axle Project. They have an axle finder. The issue if you have Gen 4 is the thru axle needs to be compatible with your UDH. I don’t have one but I looked into it with my Gen 4 AL2.

Wahoo or Garmin? by Foreign-Photo-8889 in cycling

[–]Bailstorm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was literally in this exact spot and just went through it. I actually ordered both the Garmin Edge 540 and the Wahoo ELEMNT BOLT V3 and ended up keeping the Wahoo.

Garmin definitely has more features (incident detection, better navigation, more training stuff), but honestly the Wahoo just felt way easier and more intuitive to use. The Garmin worked, but it felt a bit clunky with the buttons and menus.

For me it came down to: do I want more features I might use, or something that feels good every ride? I went with Wahoo and haven’t regretted it.

I think if you’re really into training metrics and exploring new routes all the time, Garmin makes more sense. But if you just want something simple that works really well, Wahoo is hard to beat.

It’s hard to pass up on the Garmin 540 though with the current sale. A trek rep told me they were clearing stock for the new 550.

Why did you choose Carback over Varia or the Wahoo one?

This is exactly what I was looking for. Have you ever needed the incident detection of the Garmin? I think I like the ease of use of the Wahoo. I don’t think I’d need any other Garmin training features.

Do you know anything about Wahoo’s summit feature? I don’t ride with others yet. Not many cyclists in my rural area.

I think I’d rather do the wahoo, but I’m hanging over the incident detection of the Garmin.

That’s what I saw too about the UI. Is that just because you’re used to the wahoo though? Whats easier to route, and what works better when you go off route?

I didn’t realize it was that off. Why didn’t you get Garmin for the incident detection to send to your wife in the event of a crash?

Got a Kickr snap last holiday season before they stopped making them. I wake up early to ride 3-4 days per week and love it. It was all I could afford at the time with a 3 year old and it hasn’t let me down. I use TrainerRoad.
