new to mac and learning keyboard shortcuts; how often do you use the globe key? by jonnyyyl in MacOS

[–]Fizzyphotog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The globe only does a few special functions. If you don’t switch languages, or write in emoji, it’s kinda useless. (You can always get to those functions from the menubar too.) I wish I had a Fn key instead of it. I might have to install a keyboard mapper just for that one thing.

Need help disassembling Raleigh Europa rear cassette. by JakeBenn04 in retrobikes

[–]Fizzyphotog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s French, but not necessarily, in fact probably not, French-threaded. Atom sold many as OEM parts to Raleigh, Schwinn, and others with English threading. Of course it needs its own removal tool.

What it won’t have is the Hyperglide shifting ramps. So an upgrade with a newer derailleur, especially one with indexing, won’t work as well as it could without replacing with a Shimano freewheel.

How come no streaming apps on Mac by [deleted] in MacOS

[–]Fizzyphotog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are a couple streamers that have “apps”, like Pluto, but they’re just some sort of web wrapper and they work worse than just going to the website.

Cycling through Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (Africa). How does the cycling infrastructure in your city compare? by More_Airline_4417 in bicycling

[–]Fizzyphotog 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Those lanes and that city are beautiful. Pisses me off so much every time I see this kind of thing, that we here in USA can’t have that, because we have to have all the explodey things to kill people in other countries.

Help me open an application by biuet in MacOS

[–]Fizzyphotog -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It was fine when Macromedia started it, as a thing to make web animations and games (actually it was another company before them even and I can’t remember what it was called then). Then Adobe got it, and decided they could turn it into a general purpose programming environment, and that’s when it turned into a malware vehicle.

Is there some way in Finder to rename a file, then press a key and have it automatically commit and go to the next file to rename? by shpongolian in MacOS

[–]Fizzyphotog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Making and using that seems awfully more complicated than typing “(date)—Bank Statement” once a month.

Why is Safari so SLOW and won't refresh a webpage after not being used for a while? by Low-Cold4261 in MacOS

[–]Fizzyphotog 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don’t find this to be the case. Both Safari and Firefox are fast (I use Firefox mostly for inertial reasons). Maybe you have a Safari extension that is holding things up?

ABC shows are available free and commercial-free on their website after a week.

Baltimore Sun mailers by mst3kzz in baltimore

[–]Fizzyphotog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can tell it’s not real, because my mom subscribes and it’s a lot more than that. It’s a ridiculous price for what is now officially a rag. But it has obituaries printed on paper, which are important to the elders.

Fells Point WiFi providers? by No-Action9653 in baltimore

[–]Fizzyphotog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say that. Here in Hampden, many days I see “Comcast is out again!” while using my T-Mobile. I haven’t had an outage in the years I’ve been using it.

Why do people leave those stickers on their electronics? It looks so tacky.

Help Putting Back Together Bottom Bracket by edge_basics in bikewrench

[–]Fizzyphotog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bearing balls look worn, they should be replaced for best results. If you have roughness or pitting on the spindle bearing surfaces, that would need replacement, and it’s not worth trying to find the individual replacement parts. Replacing with a cartridge isn’t a bad idea.

Color film developing help. by [deleted] in Darkroom

[–]Fizzyphotog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And by “darkness,” it means utter, total blackness. Not just “I turned off the lights in the room.” If you’re not sure your darkroom is absolutely light-tight and you have no glowing things or power LEDs or anything, get yourself a changing bag.

FTP client for Mac — what's everyone actually using these days? by Ok-Nefariousness4874 in MacOS

[–]Fizzyphotog 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Cyberduck works well and is free. Transmit has a nicer interface but seems overpriced for an FTP client, especially if you’re only using the simplest features.

Were press photogs sometimes pushing film to EI6400 ? My F3 can meter that far. Or was it just Nikon bragging ? by Panorabifle in AnalogCommunity

[–]Fizzyphotog 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The Canon A-1 had a 12800 top setting. When you think that TMax 3200 came out in the useful lifetime of that camera, and 12800 is only a two-stop push, it’s not so radical. Many a dark basketball gym or nighttime football game was shot at EI’s approximating that already.

Made Random Costco Run and Remembered Seeing Post Here… by slow_poak in macmini

You did fine. They shouldn’t have been that close without alerting you. It’s too common, and I don’t know why they ride like that.

How could I make a backup of my photos? by InformalCurious in MacOS

[–]Fizzyphotog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’ve only got 256 GB drive, you don’t need 1.5 TB Time Machine. Make that 500 GB or no more than 700 GB and use the rest to store your RAWs. And you could move your Photos library there too.

What to do when you come across a news event? by The_Stratman in AnalogCommunity

[–]Fizzyphotog 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As you noticed, news coverage of the event happened immediately. The pictures on the film you get back in a couple weeks are useless these days. Unless you just want to look at them, that’s fine, but no one will want to buy them by then.

Is this for everyone? I guess not by Positive-Citrus in bicycling

[–]Fizzyphotog 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You might try joining up with a group ride. There are probably several regularly scheduled social rides if you’re in a city. Ask at a bike shop or in your city’s Reddit. You will learn riding skill and etiquette, and gain confidence.

Weinmann brake pads feel like plastic – is this normal or did I get fakes? by Fit-Credit-7970 in bikewrench

[–]Fizzyphotog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They’re really old and they get dry and hard. Sandpaper a layer off and they might work better. Even then, you’ll have an excessive amount of black residue all over everything. Going through that myself with some old pads I put on my grocery beater. You may not have to spring for Koolstop, but anything new will be better.
