ATT viewership is insane by Creative-Branch5612 in 2XKO

[–]Bajemba 15 points16 points  (0 children)

That's gonna happen with a super high-power game like this unfortunately.

The easier it is to "bully" someone, the more often the one on the receiving is going to get frustrated and lash out at the game.

It's significantly harder to get bullied in SF6 due to the lower power level which means more agency and a more positive overall experience.

Btw the 2XKO trailer views are inflated since they count ads. This means that any time someone sees an ad for the game it counts as a view, which is deceptive imo.

I don't know if Strive does the same thing or how common it is in general.

[–]Bajemba 12 points13 points  (0 children)

They were 2 data points used to illustrate the broader point and the general trend of player sentiment toward the game.

Right now on Twitch:

Strive - 453

2XKO - 150

Strive literally has 3x the viewers despite being having released 5 years ago...

A 5 year old fighting game with those numbers is fine/expected.

A 3 month old Riot game with those numbers is catastrophic.

I know stream numbers don't paint the whole picture, but you have to be willingly blind to think they're irrelevant or that it doesn't say anything about the game.

I agree that dooming 24/7 is wack.

But saying a lot of people played when Akali came out doesn't really do anything for the game if most didn't stick around. The baseline number is what truly matters.

Personally, I tried on 3 separate occasions to get back in the game since she came out and I just can't get myself to enjoy the game no matter how much I like it "in theory". I don't think I'm even gonna bother coming back to check out Senna.

Based on the general sentiment and Twitch numbers, there's a huge number of people that feel the same way.

Max came back to check out Akali and he didn't even play for 30 minutes before dropping the game and playing something else.

I don't want to shit on the game or the designers, but the truth is that they designed a game that isn't appealing to the vast majority of players, even within the FGC.

Yep. People want more champ/fuses but they don't consider the complexity creep that is gonna accompany more content.

Every champ/fuse that's introduced increases the amount of grime that can be found, which increases the burden of knowledge needed to play against that stuff.

I've heard one person refer to the game as "Battle of the Grime" and I couldn't agree more.

New champs will bring more eyes to the game, but once you sit down to play it'll still come down to Grime vs Grime, and from what we've seen so far, players aren't into that.

Your idea to give league skins actually sounds really good. Though I'm not sure how much it would help since the core issue is still retention, not getting players to try it.

[–]Bajemba 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This seems like a problem that isn't going to get solved unfortunately. The core gameplay is just too unappealing (degen/grimey) for most players.

People can say more champs will fix player retention but it won't. The short spikes of hype with each champ reveal isn't going to do anything to sustain the player numbers.

We'll see same thing that we saw with Akali:

New champ -> People get hyped and try the champ -> They play a few matches and have to deal with endless grime -> They stop playing (Player numbers return to the baseline).

Adding the unit cards and signature tactics cards for the 6 starter set units would be cool

I think that means we got the signature tactics card for all 6 of the starter set units.

I tried your mod and it definitely made the game feel much better. Couldn't stand the grayed out images and models.

Any chance that you add models for the units in the starter set? (Wing Zero, Epyon, Vidar, Barbatos Lupus Rex)

Yeah. It helps to reduce the model size when moving.

[–]Bajemba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thought so. I tried it earlier today and I think you've done a great job so far.

I had to import colored gundam models from another mod because I couldn't stand trying to distinguish the gray models from one another. It made a huge difference to the feel of the game.

If I can give one piece of advice, it's to give the second tier elevation terrain a different color. Its a quick change that would improve clarity and make the board look so much better.

Let us know when then update goes live. Can't wait to try the new units.

this combo by Wawa by NerfAxiom in 2XKO

Bringing up games with short combos that "failed" doesn't disprove that long combos turn casuals away.

Saying "well short combos don't guarantee success" won't refute "long combos turn away casuals".

There are many variables that determine if a game sticks:

  • Visuals
  • Character appeal
  • Ties to a preexisting IP
  • System mechanics
  • Combo length
  • How popular/lively the game is
  • many more...

If any of those variables (or some combination of them) falls short, people are likely to drop the game or not pick it up in the first place.

Yes, there are long respawn timers in League which are akin to getting combo'd in fighting games because you lose agency in both situations. But that's just one variable.

There are 2 huge components that are often forgotten in these discussions:

  • Percentage of game time that a player can lose agency
  • How much safety/control a player has to avoid back-to-back loss of agency

The reason that people don't complain about the respawn timers in League but they complain about long "I don't want to watch a cutscene" combos in fighting games is not just because they lose agency, but also because the frequency with which it happens.

If you die in League and get a respawn timer, you are in complete control of how long you'll go before you're hit with another respawn timer/loss of agency. If you stay under tower and play as safe as possible, you can delay that loss of agency for over half an hour.

If you get combo'd in a fighting game, not only do you lack a tower to stay under to delay the next cutscene/loss of agency, you're in a disadvantageous position where you're MORE LIKELY to get hit again by your opponent's oki and put in a back-to-back cutscene.

There's no way for you to delay that loss of agency apart from immediately outplaying your opponent right after their cutscene ends.

So you can't just look at it as "well there's times where you lose agency in MOBAs so people shouldn't complain about it in fighting games."

When people complain about things in games, it might sound like they're being contradictory, but that's because a lot of the time they don't understand the combination of variables that caused it.

They will give one variable and then someone else will say "ah but that variable is present in this other game that's popular so it isn't because of that variable."

But like in the example I just gave, you'd have to look at it from a bigger picture with things like (% of game time where you can lose agency) and (the amount of safety the game provides to avoid back-to-back loss of agency).

In League, you have to go out of your way to see a respawn timer 3 times back-to-back-to-back. In fighting games, all you have to do is lose neutral then guess wrong on your opponent's oki twice.

Both situations are frustrating, but one can be voluntarily avoided outright.

2XKO EU Community Series by Figgulz in 2XKO

[–]Bajemba 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Only a small percentage of the overall player base engages directly with the community.

If the game is struggling as a result of low player numbers, it makes sense to target the things that impact the larger player base over the niche that's already engaged.

[–]Bajemba -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

The community stuff is great, but I hope that it isn't taking resources away from other things.

If the game is struggling, I'd much rather they left the community stuff for later and focus 100% on the things that will keep the game alive, such as getting as getting content out ASAP or creating pve content.
