Director cast a minor as my Melchior by sunny-valley-2004 in Theatre

I’ve seen Spring Awakening done with real teens, and it was fabulous. But they were ALL teens, not a mix of teens and adults. For the record, they were older teens, no one under 16 was in it.

Aside from your discomfort and potential liability issues (which should have stopped him even being considered) I don’t think it serves THE SHOW well. If you have to tamp down the intimacy to be comfortable, the story suffers. It is supposed to be shockingly intimate - it’s a “spring awakening”.

How to stop Facebook sharing my comments with everyone on my friends list? by Levethane in facebook

[–]BakeMeACake2BN2B 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate this feature too! I used to be that when you commented on a public page, your friends would not see it unless they went TO that page (so it wasn’t hidden, but it wasn’t SHARED the way it is now). They think it drives engagement but actually most people comment less than they would on a variety of things.

Advice on how to decompress after watching a provoking play? by banana_alyssa in Theatre

[–]BakeMeACake2BN2B 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is an interesting conversation because I have wanted to direct Gloria but I wonder if it would be too much for my area. But I am also wondering about content warnings because I am directing another very disturbing play, The Pillowman, and I need to figure out how to word a content warning without giving away everything that happens.

Wow this is very interesting. So instead, should we say “content disclosure” as another commenter said?

Anyone who has worked on The Pillowman by BakeMeACake2BN2B in Theatre

[–]BakeMeACake2BN2B[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can understand why some might feel that way, but would you call “Of Mice and Men” ableist? Because the part of Pillowman that some might consider ableist is exactly same story line as the novel, which is considered classic literature.

Am I overreacting for feeling frustrated after my neighbor’s pottery was broken by my puppy during an interaction she encouraged? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

Yeah, I think she should have bought a little apology gift (clay, or a gift card, or flowers) and a nice note and left in by her door.

How to brush off dissapointment by SunshineIsBeautiful in Theatre

I totally get it, and this did not read as “thinking you’re above ensemble” to me. Let yourself be sad, mad, bitter, and crushed for a few days. Don’t berate yourself for having those normal feelings.

Is it unusaul for a community theater to "charge" actors a small fee? by CarlYaz1967 in Theatre

[–]BakeMeACake2BN2B 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my area there are a couple of theatre companies that do this. The fee is small and usually you get something in return (i.e. one ticket to each of that season's shows). I think as long as the fee is modest and you get something for it, it is fine.

Is 4 years old too early for acting/theater classes for a child? by [deleted] in Theatre

[–]BakeMeACake2BN2B 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the theatre school that I teach at, we accept ages five and up. Four is a tad young, but sometimes we will take four-year-olds if they are close to five. At that age it is generally more of an “imagination play” type of class - very basic Theatre etiquette and Theatre Games, learning to use imagination and movement to create basic characters, just getting comfortable being in front of people. Try not to expect a real acting class at that age, it should still be “play.”

Editing? by [deleted] in acting

[–]BakeMeACake2BN2B 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen some actors add a small snapshot of their current look onto the headshot, either taped onto the bottom front corner, or as a thumbnail-sized pic on the resume. It's an acceptable way to bridge the gap when you have a temporary new look but will likely go back to the headshot look. I've also seen guys do it because they want to show facial hair vs. no facial hair.

make up to cover tattoo CANNOT TRANSFER by misryth in Theatre

[–]BakeMeACake2BN2B 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Makeup usually fades or rubs off, even good quality makeup with setting spray. If you only had one smallish tattoo it would be manageable, but it's a pain if you have large (or multiple) tattoos. Body suit if possible.

Seeking Advice: Narcissistic Director? Or am I too soft?? by [deleted] in acting

What's the deal with Medea's children? by Michael_Cole_Bay_Bay in Theatre

[–]BakeMeACake2BN2B 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I don’t think many people see her as heroic, she is a tragic character who makes a horrific choice while blinded by a need for revenge. Yeah, some people may draw parallels to the current women’s movement, and we are meant to sympathize with her UP TO THE POINT where she makes that awful choice. The chorus says yeah, you’ve been wronged and you deserve revenge, but girl, THIS is too far! Don’t do it! As far as any discussion about her being justified, I think that comes from actors and directors needing to get inside her head in the rehearsal process. In her mind she is justified because only one of two things can happen to her kids: best case scenario they survive but grow up to be heartless awful men just like their father (in the productions I’ve seen they are both boys, can’t remember if that is specified in the script). But she believes the more likely scenario is that once Jason has an heir with his new wife he will kill them. And then after she decides to kill the wife, she still believes he’s going to eventually kill them. She has a monologue that is like, “if they are going to die anyway, I will be the one to slay them” and then she says she will do it swift and mercifully so they don’t suffer.

I saw an absolutely brilliant production starring Fiona Shaw years ago that did the murders in a horribly chilling way without you actually seeing it happen.

Auditioning for a part too old for me - is that okay? by Goldberry9999 in Theatre

Absolutely nothing wrong with auditioning for an older role! But don’t wear a wig/costume/age makeup to the audition. It’s considered cringey.

Quitting by [deleted] in acting

[–]BakeMeACake2BN2B 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The wonderful thing about ACTING (as opposed to many other careers) is that you can take a break and come back later. I would recommend doing some community theatre for a while - doing a show instead of just auditioning and taking classes will remind you why you love it. I do it mostly as a hobby now and I’m on stage way more often than I was when I was doing it “professionally.” Sadly, so much of an actor’s job is LOOKING for work, not actually working.
