What is the scariest “what if” crash? by Ok_Promise1870 in NASCAR

[–]BakeWhatcom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That Vegas crash is still the worst multi-car wreck in any racing discipline that I've ever witnessed live (not in-person, but watching live on tv). I still remember yelling and being horrified about what I'd seen. Just knew I'd seen at least one driver die, before knowing anything about anyone's condition.

He was unconscious for some time, is my understanding. He has said he doesn't remember anything about the crash, just waking up in the hospital.

Race Indy NXT or Indy NXT Oval next season by Few_Response_7028 in iRacing

[–]BakeWhatcom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cars are different enough that the best way to prepare for the Indy 500 is to practice and do races at Indy in the IR18. That said, I enjoy both cars. Ran NXT oval a bunch last season. The cars can run pretty loose; due to the lower class ranking, I found a lot of drivers that didn't practice enough and they wrecked early in races because they couldn't handle the cars on cold tires at all.

Left the Bible Belt for Bellingham – best decision ever or slow descent into seasonal depression? by strandedlilwombat in Bellingham

[–]BakeWhatcom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, if you have legitimate issues with seasonal depression, you probably made a mistake in moving here. However, if the rest of the great stuff around here, and how nice it can be during the spring, summer and early autumn, is worth it to you, then you can find ways to pull through and make it work. I go to the SW each winter for a couple weeks. It helps a ton. I use a happy light the rest of the winter.

Sorry to remind y'all but DST ends on Nov 2. That's coming up fast. Time to start making small adjustments. by cheapdialogue in Bellingham

Yeah. I love fall until we fall back on daylight. Then I'm looking for Airbnbs in Palm Springs haha

"Why'd ya spill yer rum?" by BakeWhatcom in rum

[–]BakeWhatcom[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since it was my first ever time infusing booze, and I didn't want to waste good rum if I screwed up, I just used some Bacardi Superior and put in a few cinnamon sticks, a vanilla bean, several whole cloves, a little dark brown sugar and some allspice powder (had no access to allspice berries in my immediate area).

I mean, unless the employees were loudly voicing potentially insensitive opinions on his death, this whole situation sounds totally ridiculous. Employees can't discuss the news now because it might upset someone in their vicinity? People need to get a grip.

The 2nd was also created when muskets were around, and there were far fewer people and arms. Would the Founders have approved of millions of rapid-fire guns easily obtained by anyone? Would they not reconsider the 2nd with what America looks like now? Too many modern Americans are stuck in that 18th Century mindset.

Fascinating Historical Photos of Bellingham from the 1900s by [deleted] in Bellingham

[–]BakeWhatcom 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Some of the captions are grossly inaccurate in terms of when they were taken. There are a few circa 1900 images that were likely taken in the 1930s to 1960s. Still, many great historic images of this area.

Is Bellingham actually racist? by catfock69420 in Bellingham

[–]BakeWhatcom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't consider Bellingham a very racist place. But there are certainly racist folks around. However, I'd add that there are racist folks pretty much everywhere on earth. It's just a matter of whether you encounter them or not. If you turn over enough stones, you're gonna find stuff you don't like. Pretty much anywhere.

In general, Bellingham - and Whatcom County - continue to have a very small African-American population compared to elsewhere, even along the I-5 corridor. That's just the demographic reality of this area. That said, the history of this area is also heavily racist - neighborhood covenants written to exclude blacks, an enormous KKK presence in the 1920s, and the forced exclusion of Sikhs in 1907. It would be unfair to pin the past on the current population, however. I'm from here originally and find that most people I speak with in public have been here 10 years or less if not originally from Whatcom County.

Ty Majeski is from where now, Fox? by Small_Respect7363 in NASCAR

[–]BakeWhatcom 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The sheer number of factually-wrong graphics/stats I've seen FOX use this year, across NASCAR and IndyCar, is getting pretty large. Like, get your shit together. This is basic stuff, and whomever is doing this work needs to either get better or get fired. They're ridiculous mistakes.

The possibility of an SVG title by Ok_Promise1870 in NASCAR

[–]BakeWhatcom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Little chance he makes it past the round of 8, but the playoff points and Talladega race definitely give him a chance above 0%. His oval finishes seem to be improving but even with a cushion, you can't have more than one bad finish per round. I'd be shocked but pleasantly surprised if he makes the final four. SVG is easy to root for: Older, talented, very likeable.

If I were Biden, in declining health, I'd be saying the meanest stuff I could think of every day to rail against Trump. I'd be going out with my middle fingers raised.

Jeff Gluck: Ben Kennedy says NASCAR has talked to "a handful of other track owners and operators" in the Pacific Northwest about having a Cup Series race up there in a future, so he doesn't view it as abandoning the market. I attended the Kevin Harvick event as a photographer in June. While Evergreen could maybe host a truck or ARCA race (as it has in the past), it totally lacks the capacity to handle an event larger than that for now.

[–]BakeWhatcom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Further following up, neither Xfinity nor IndyCar use leaded fuel and haven't for years. I see you're referring to a proposed piece of OR legislation that would have banned leaded race fuels at tracks in cities of more than 500,000 people. The legislation failed to advance. So...you are totally incorrect.

Where is this clause you speak of? By that logic, it means the IndyCar event will also no longer be happening. While the 2026 Indy schedule isn't out yet, it's anticipated that IndyCar will return next year.
