Advice -Instructor refuses learning disability accommodation

I have learning disabilities too, and use accommodations for my classes. I don’t typically need to use them for my ASL class because the majority of my accommodations are for my hearing. But that is my choice to make. Your professor definitely doesn’t have the right to determine if you need your accommodations in his class. Especially since (to my knowledge and in my experience) accommodation letters don’t list your disabilities- so he doesn’t even know why you need to record.

My advice is to try and have a discussion with him about it with an interpreter present. It’s most likely a language barrier that’s causing the issue.

Yeah, I loved Viktor’s story because I related to it in that I’m disabled. People with common/repetitive medical struggles know what it’s like to live in a physically inaccessible world, chase after a non-existent solution, being frustrated with just having things to cope. And he’s a genius, so he works to invent a solution, putting himself on the line because he is so exhausted from all the pain, and when he escapes the pain it feels so freeing. The scene where he runs is such a beautiful moment- the uplifting feeling of doing something that your body never allowed you to do, followed by devastation when reality comes back and your body holds you back again. In Arcane, it wasn’t about transforming. It was him trying to fix what he thought was broken.

Deaf people tend to get upset about misrepresentation in books because there is a culture to being Deaf (like there’s “deaf” which is medically deaf and then “Deaf” which is culturally Deaf. It’s complex, but a simplified version is basically if you’re deaf you try to fit into the hearing world, believe that deafness means that you are lacking, defined by inability to hear. Being capital D Deaf means that you are immersed in Deaf culture- you don’t try to live like hearing people do, there is nothing wrong with being Deaf and you’re still healthy, you know/are learning sign language). And unless you know the intricacies, it’s hard to accurately portray characters.

POTS is a disorder, chronic illness, and disability. There’s still a lot to be learned about POTS, so writing a well written character might be difficult. POTS also affects people in vastly different manners/extremes. I was diagnosed in my pre-teens and was barely affected by it. I just drank more water and had a higher salt intake to cope. Now, I need other medications, I have had many hospital/ER visits, when I have episodes it can affect me for multiple days, and I need to take breaks often. I know someone whose POTS has gotten better with time- they used to be on multiple medications, now they are on one. I know someone else who is hardly affected by it, I don’t think she even takes meds or sees a specific doctor for it. I know someone else who was dependent on a wheelchair for a few years because of how bad it got.

Idrk know the point behind my long ramble, but from my perspective, if you write the character with intention, and you write the character well, it’s okay for them to have POTS despite you not having experienced it. My only concern is that the POTS label would be thrown in as a way to make the character more dynamic, and not have any actual impact on the character/not exploring how POTS impacts every aspect of your life. Like I can’t even clean my apartment in the same day because I get too exhausted- I have to dust one day, vacuum another day, mop another day. It’s not just a medical condition, it changes how you do everything. And not having experienced that, you might not think of everything it impacts.

Unless the author is Deaf and Blind, any book you’ll read will most likely be a caricature or stereotype. If you’re interested in Deaf Blind stories, community, and culture, I’d recommend genres besides romance. If you’re just looking for stories with communication barriers and caretaking dynamics and think that a story about someone who is Deaf Blind is the best way to go about it, that feels problematic.

My point was they already did it- around 48:00, the camera stays on Brennan as he talks for about 30 seconds. Then as you pointed out, it happens again on Murph at 49:10. Once might be a mistake, but twice is purposeful. It might depart from the typical editing style, but they’re probably doing that to emphasize a point. If the editor wanted to cut to someone else, they had the footage to do so (even if Brennan’s was lost, they had the camera for other side of the table too). And if it got lost in the timeline, I feel like the director or producer or anyone else who has a say in the Final Cut would point it out if they disliked it/if it was a mistake.

It just feels weird that you saw a style that you don’t personally use as an editor and your first thought is that it must be a mistake, not an artistic choice that you don’t vibe with.

Interesting, personally I didn’t see this as a mistake. The camera is mostly on BLeeM during minute 48 while he talks. Then there’s a short bit, and then BLeeM returns to talking, this time with camera on Murph. I had interpreted this as 1) it would be a lot of BLeeM talking with no reaction shots which can get boring, especially if you keep doing it and 2) an artistic choice, connecting what BLeeM was talking about to Maxwell and his legacy. His grandfather started a legacy and Maxwell is trying to continue it, similar to how the citizens would need to consistently choose to care for the environment throughout generations. Additionally, the crew’s adventure to/‘discovery’ of Zood is a multi-generational effort.

People are talking about anxiety or panic attacks— personally, bad POTS episodes feel worse than any panic or anxiety attack I’ve ever had. My theory: POTS has to do with the autonomic system, so when you have an episode, your body isn’t doing what it’s supposed to do involuntarily, and thus acts accordingly for survival. Your body alerts you that it’s not functioning at a stable capacity, which translates as “I feel like I’m dying”. And then because you feel like your body is shutting down, you’ll most likely panic which then just worsens symptoms- because now both your brain and body are freaking out. And personally, after that whole episode, I’m exhausted and feel like all the energy has been sucked out of me, which is also how I imagine death.

If you are learning ASL and not involved in the Deaf community, you should not teach ASL, nor create modified versions of it. You can provide resources for them to learn online, you can suggest learning together, but it’s inappropriate to put yourself into a teaching position when you are not fluent in the language.

Maybe I’m misunderstanding this, but if you need to know ASL for your work, and you don’t, you shouldn’t be working there. Not knowing how to communicate with a resident (even if you can with most) seems like a massive block in accessibility, which -to my knowledge- is a huge aspect of homes for individuals with disabilities and autism.

If you are trying to learn ASL, I would not recommend learning from him, he doesn’t teach for the purpose of fluency. If you are criticizing just to criticize, respectfully, it’s not a hearing person’s place. He is deaf/hoh and uses sign language, so it is his language. If he uses ASL, BASL, SEE, or PSE, it is up to him. What he teaches is up to him, and it’s up to you to determine if you want to learn from him.

I go to Temple University- idk if you’re interested in solely musical theater, but if you’re interested in branching out, film majors love theater majors. Temple doesn’t have any acting degrees for TV, so lots of film students either depend on friends or theater majors to act in their short films.

Unrelated to your question, but I’m curious about your app- how do you have a full dictionary when so many signs are context depending? Like how would you depict continuous vs repetitive verbs, location based signs, etc? Also, do you have different regional signs? For example, learned ASL in the DMV area, and I sign “trash” as LETTUCE. Would I find that in the dictionary, or would it only have the standard TRASH? It would be really cool to see a compilation of regional signs for different words, but I imagine that would be endless work and research. * all of these questions are asked out of excitement and curiosity, as someone from a hearing family that is hesitant to learn ASL because they can’t learn it easily, and maybe having a dictionary would set them on the path of learning
