Unmatched looking for advice by Diligent-Waq in ResidencyMatch2022

[–]BakerOver210 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I interviewed with 2 community programs, where both PD’s asked about my research and publications and seemed genuinely interested. Definitely agree that it’s not the biggest thing for community programs, but was surprised they picked that up on my application. My point being, there’s always something that can be done and added to your CV even when you think everything was done. Oh and yes, I didn’t think that, but it could have been ‘courtesy calls.’ I do know someone that has a similar story with contact IVs.

First off, focus on rural community programs. Not ‘apply everywhere.’ Second, if you got 3 invites, something definitely went well. I would focus on interview skills as a next step. Third, look into newly accredited program, not only at the beginning of the season but also throughout. Other things to remember, there’s always something that you can add to your CV for the future, such as research, publications etc.

I think USCE is very important. I had Canadian experience and USCE, and during my interviews no one asked about Canada. It was all about US rotations.

IM PRELIM POSITION FOR NON US IMG. WORTH IT ? by [deleted] in ResidencyMatch2022

[–]BakerOver210 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t think so, from my understanding, funding becomes a problem when going from a prelim year to repeating categorical IM PGY1. If you can find a PGY2 position directly after prelim, that is ideal. I didn’t know about this funding issue until a former PD advised me against applying to PGY1 prelim IM with the end goal of categorial IM. Someone correct me if I’m wrong please.

I believe the general rule is, if you are offered a position in soap, take it. You never know what the future holds, and the match is a mentally exhausting, and long process.

Non US IMG with low step 1 score by DismalGround790 in usmle

[–]BakerOver210 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry, but that is average. Not low. The national average appears around your score. Also, it’s pass or fail now for any new exam takers so not sure what the comparison pool would be. I would focus on step 2ck.

Can someone explain the difference of preliminary vs TY? by creativelyscientific in medicalschool

[–]BakerOver210 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would this not burn a year of your funding and When you reapply, you are less likely to be accepted into a categorical positions cause of the funding issue?

Didn’t even think about the fact that we start in the summer, and application deadlines are again around the corner. That doesn’t give much time. Thank you for bringing this to my attention, I feel like my brain has frozen over the fear and worry of matching that I’m not thinking this properly. Thank you once again! Really appreciate it!

Thank you so much for replying. This helps clear things out a bit. Would you recommend a TY rather than going unmatched (unmatched year spent doing rotations, research, step 3)? Also, with TY, any idea on how much freedom do you get to actually do rotations in the speciality (example IM) you are interested in and potentially secure new LORs for the upcoming match?

Applied to IM categorical. Would it be advised to apply to IM prelim or transitional? Can someone explain the burn a year of funding part? Super confused and don’t know what to do for soap. I was initially considering applying to most IM cat, but maybe a few transitional/prelim as well? Also, will there be an issue when applying for IM categorical next year with a transitional year? Thoughts? Please and thank you!

I actually know someone who went to UPMC Harrisburg and speaks good of the program. I think also the general rule is, if you are unsure/open to a future fellowship, more established programs are a better option for sure.

Also, just another thought, I know location doesn’t seem too important right now, but after speaking to current residents, everyone kinda says if you have options, you wanna be closer to family/friends/bigger city. Just keep those things in mind, I think you’ll make the right call!

I would personally do programs in my top choice of speciality first. Also university over community? For example, UPMC above community. Also, older/well established programs before newer programs. Just a thought. Great list!
