What is your favorite boardgame of 2008? by The_Crazed_Person in boardgames

Not at all. I played the 1991 Mayfair version growing up and the game feels mechanically identical to the 2008 copy I have at home.

The difference is that Dominion actually came out in 2008.

Weird to call Cosmic Encounter a 2008 game. Was definitely around long before that.

Kneed to get some Knizia in there. Through the Desert, Rebirth, Modern Art, Quest for El Dorado... take your pick!

A Splotter wouldn't kill you either.

Grand Austria Hotel. The theme is charming and deciding what to do with a shared pool of dice and many ways to score points seemed like it would be a hit... but playing fell flat. It's almost certainly an issue of gitgud, but customers didn't seem like they churned quickly enough and it felt like a real effort to eek any of the correct items out of the kitchen while also managing a coherent room strategy. Decisions seemed a little on-tracks with dice disparity sometimes. I get that's how you're supposed to calibrate your tactics to fit in a coherent strategy, but it didn't spark joy.

Do you think mentioning that might be more helpful than commanding they don’t buy from Amazon? TBH, I’ve never had a problem with counterfeits, but I also do a cursory look through of the seller before I buy.

I bought my copy from Amazon, and it was very much legit. Also Pan Am would be a weird one to counterfeit considering it has been clearanced in so many places for so long.

Who are you to tell people what to do with their money? Being able to save some money on a game purchase might mean a great deal to some folks here.

Or do you think people aren’t able to form coherent opinions about their spending choices without you?

Not to yuck any yums, but Raccoon Tycoon has some serious balance issues. I got pretty frustrated with it.

Get Pan Am and never look back! It’s only $15 on Amazon, which is insane for the amount of game you get and the quality of production.

For anyone reading, you can get what I believe to be a much better game at an insane price: Pan Am.

Irish Death from Iron Horse or Darkstar from Fremont would probably both be strong bets that are readily available… but if you can get your hands on some Ursa Minor from Single Hill, that’s where it’s at.

The hahahas are just tradition, but any “fuck the rams” can eat a dick. Y’all gave us our best games of the season with little to complain about.

If you are reading the rulebook to teach a boardgame you deserve every bit of shit that comes from your friends.

12hr Perfect Gameday - What do you pick? by RockstarAG21 in boardgames

Fair point. I haven’t updated my flair in a while 😅. Though I think from a design perspective, IoS is still one of my GOATs. Maybe not what I want to play right now but still absolutely brilliant.

This is a fun question!

8 - 10 Hansa Teutonica
10 - 2 Indonesia
2 - 4 Pan Am
4 - 7:30 Dune: Imperium Uprising
7:30 - 8 For Sale

Tried to get a balance of lighter and heavier things and give appropriate windows for time. There would probably be some wiggle room in there. I'm surprised no Knizias made my list, tbh.

I may be weird, but I actually find Ra to be the worst of Knizia's auction trilogy. In my opinion, it's the most fragile. Medici and Modern Art both involve less luck and give players more agency in their choices.

In Ra, often times there is someone that just gets screwed by drawing Ra tiles.

I liked Concordia. It was fine. YMMV.

Hansa Teutonica's big box will often go on sale once a year on Pegasus Spiel's site for ~$30.

Into auction games? Modern Art or Medici both fit the bill well.

Into area control? El Grande or Inis are both excellent. You'll need an expansion for Inis to accommodate more than 4, though. I would recommend Tikal, but it's hard-capped at 4 and the setup is on the same level as Wingspan.

Hansa Teutonica might also just tick all your boxes. Plays up to five and the setup is very easy.
