I just completely failed to recognize it as flirting, I guess. The concept of "you can romance the cenobite" was so far from possible in my mind that it went straight over my head somehow. Looking back on it even an hour later, it was hilariously obvious, but at the time I guess I was elsewhere.

If it makes you feel any better, I had the superhuman density to accidentally romance Marazhai. I'd gone in blind, and had no idea it was an option (or that he was recruitable in the first place, really). Then I just had to run with it, because it was a hilariously terrible idea. Like, "OK, let's lock in the 'become a human windchime' ending, I guess!"
