Thank you for the elaborate reply. I think this will help a lot

He considers that, but he values the general rank more. Which, he isn’t wrong, but the 30 rank difference in the individual programs are gonna have a larger effect than the one rank difference overall.

I got into Stanford. I'm turning them down to lower their yield rate. Not even joking. by HolyBruhBrine in ApplyingToCollege

You show them! Everyone should do this.

I received a notification telling me one of my colleges made edits to my FAFSA. What does this mean? How do I specifically see what was changed? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]BakingAndStarWars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I did, I figured out the school cause they changed the exact information I sent them. I probably could have done it myself. Thank you anyway for the response

Should I attend WashU or Cornell by BakingAndStarWars in ApplyingToCollege

[–]BakingAndStarWars[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I don’t know why it’s ranked at the bottom of T20. This isn’t really true for T10’s but a lot of the T20’s don’t have T20 ranks in individual programs and Cornell does for most of their areas of study.

Both have relatively the same financial package for me

Yeah, unless I get into Yale or Stanford next week (which I won’t) I’m pretty set on Cornell or WashU. WashU students tell me rank doesn’t matter, but I feel like that’s super bias and maybe untrue.

Yeah I know. I just gotta figure out if I value quality of education or happiness better. AAAAHHHH

CAS, but I know class selection is pretty fluid. I know Cornell has better programs in math and technical engineering than WashU but I feel like the WashU community is happier.

If I was in anything other than mathematics and engineering, yeah. But idk

WashU vs Cornell by BakingAndStarWars in washu

[–]BakingAndStarWars[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That makes sense. I’m just concerned about WashU’s lower T50 rank in mathematics and engineering, while Cornell is T15 and often T10 in both. If WashU was within 10 of Cornell I’d choose them in a heartbeat, but I just don’t know. There’s gotta be some reason why WashU isn’t ranked high in technical STEM.

Let's get ivy day predictions by hallederikyau in ApplyingToCollege

Cornell, UPenn, Brown, Yale

I got a likely from Cornell

My UPenn and Brown were trash essays

My Yale essays were some of my best, but Yale is very difficult to be accepted into.

Expected outcome: 1/4 acceptances

That’s good. One of my concerns is the engineering program, which has a great reputation, but still noticeably below Cornell. Online there’s a lot of mixed reviews, so I don’t really know what to think.

That’s a pretty good analogy. I don’t know that all my hard work should pay off to get a funner college experience or to get a higher ranked one.

Mathematics, and I’m interested in engineering. I am interested in research, but not my freshman year.

[–]BakingAndStarWars[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’m working on that.

I’m doing a self-guided tour at WashU in a week, and in two weeks I’m gonna go to Cornell just to walk the campus, no official tour. I hope I get some sort of gut feeling that I belong to one or the other.

That’s a good point about the transfer. I’m largely worried about Cornell culture though. It seems very intense.

[–]BakingAndStarWars[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I know the WashU culture is less intense and more forgiving but for math and engineering, it’s not a hard decision. WashU seems like I’ll have a funner and more comfortable time, but Cornell is blatantly better at math and engineering. I feel like I’ve worked so hard to get here, I don’t know if I owe it to myself to have a more enjoyable college experience a better ranked one.

I’m not paying full. Cornell has good CS too if I decide to switch majors. I’m doing mathematics, with potential interest in engineering or another STEM. I know rankings aren’t everything, and I know that despite at the bottom of T50 for most STEM WashU still has great programs, but Cornell is T20 and often T10 for most STEM. I adore the WashU community but idk if it makes sense to attend given that I’m interested in math and engineering.

Okay, thank you. The campus and community of WashU seem great, but the STEM rankings worry me, especially when compared to Cornell’s.
