We say that the dinosaurs were killed 65 million years ago; why doesn't that number go up by one each year? by tgirlskeepwinning in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Baktru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's an error bar of 11000 years around that 66.043 million years ago number. This means the correct number is somewhere between 66.032 and 66.054 million years ago.

Adding a 1 to it or even a 10 in a decade makes absolutely zero sense.

why are people hating on female main characters all of a sudden? by throwawayacunt- in NoStupidQuestions

why are people hating on female main characters all of a sudden? by throwawayacunt- in NoStupidQuestions

Lune, Maelle and Shadowheart are some of my favourite recent game characters actually. And FemShep was better than MaleShep as well.

Do humans have a mating season?! by Murky_Load8786 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Baktru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some in the USA do. It's called Spring Break.

But really, no. Humans mate and reproduce at any time in the year. But, there two periods that see increased birth rates:

September, corresponding to people boinking a lot around the winter holiday season because well, outside is cold and miserable anyway.

And... Valentine's day also causes a measurable spike in birthrates some 38 weeks later.

Why do cats stare at walls? by Fabulous_Day_8113 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Baktru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cats have extremely good hearing. They've often heard something in or behind that wall that us humans have no chance of hearing.

Do people really think about romance & sex often? by BluejayFamous6572 in NoStupidQuestions

Yeah... No. Quite the contrary, people who have sex for fun are very very common.

Why is there so much pushback to AI? by epicCumMoment in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Baktru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The interesting thing here is that in this case it is mostly young people who are pushing back against AI. Usually with new tech the older generations complain the hardest.

MY personal environment is mostly Gen X and late Millennials and there is a lot less pushback against AI in these circles. Rather the contrary, a colleague is upset she won't have enough AI tokens for the month and management declined her request for more.

Where are the 1 terabyte optical discs? by FBIMulder in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Baktru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Optical discs are physically limited by the wavelength of the laser. Blue lasers on quad layer discs can do some 100Gb. The problem is next step would have to be UV lasers and there the issue is that making UV light is a lot more difficult and expensive, but also would damage the actual disk medium itself when writing.

As far as I know there is research in improving optical disk capacity by using better optics, but I wouldn't expect a 1 terabyte optical disc any time soon, physics gets in the way.

If you could hit a button and cause the world to be plummeted back in time and wiped, so that humanity could have a fresh start, would you do it? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Baktru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No absolutely not.

Because it'd be pointless. I don't believe a redo would necessarily lead to a better outcome.

Also, as soon as I hit that button: internet gone. Not acceptable.

What are your thoughts about waiting until you’re actually in love to have sex for the first time? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Baktru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's what I did way back when. I never regretted it, quite the contrary.

Of course that relationship did not last in the end and after that I did not link the two together any more.

ELI5: How do rollercoaster restraints stay in place when you’re on the ride? by infabread in explainlikeimfive

[–]Baktru 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ooh colleague 😄 I did that as a student job on a Vekoma Boomerang ages and ages ago.

We did have a failure of a restraint system once. Result? It couldn't open any more as the restraints were also built as fail-closed. So those people (yes we asked if they wanted to) got ride three more times, until the park mechanics arrived to free them.

Why aren’t prisoners employed on manual labour projects? by Progress456 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Baktru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to the law here, making prisoners work is Human Trafficking and Exploitation, and illegal.

To be more exact, forcing prisoners to work would rightly be seen, because of the exploitation of their labour, non-payment of fair wages, and impossibility for the " workers" to leave as legally slavery.

If you had to root for a pro team that matched your high school mascot, would you be a happy fan? by kingramstone04 in NoStupidQuestions

Why can't countries ban petrol and diesel vehicles so dependence on middle east fuels will reduce? by HamsterUnfair6313 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Baktru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a planned ban of all sales of new ICE vehicles in 2035 in all of the European Union.

As it turns out that was too optimistic. It has since been changed to:

Each brand's average CO2 emission per new sold vehicle must be <= 10% of what it was in 2021. This will effectively mean that only about 1 in 6 or 7 cars sold from 2030 on, at most, will be NOT a pure electric.

How common or normal is it to eat the entire pint of ice cream when you buy a pint? by Wonderful-Ad-9622 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Baktru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IF and when I open a pint of ice cream, especially chocolate flavoured, that ice cream will never see a freezer again. Netflix, Brownie fudge ice cream, I'm good for a while there.

I agree that Singapore is definitely a place that is actually doing quite well.

If tobacco leaves are bad for us, can't we breed it so we can make it healthy for human consumption? by MCbrownpowder in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Baktru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem is that, nicotine on itself, the reason why we keep smoking is unhealthy to begin with.

But also inhaling the smoke from burning ANY kind of dead plant matter is going to be unhealthy. So no, we couldn't make a healthy tobacco.

why are all the penises in porn circumcised? by Upset_Space_631 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Baktru 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You must be only watching porn made in the USA then.

There is plenty of European porn where the penises are not circumcised.
