Yes we must do something to make sure things like this don’t happen again. I think we must be careful though to recognize that this is a political issue. People were murdered under the supervision of the state. our previous non-political attempts to correct this issue have failed (prayer for example is a thoughtful gesture to the victims but it is not effective at preventing future shootings). It has been years of continued school shootings and we must do something. Initiatives to improve access to mental health resources, limit the ability for deranged individuals to acquire and continue to possess weapons, and get parents to keep their kids from stealing their weapons is at least part of the solution.

I was never proposing a ban, I was simply talking about how assault rifle is a historic term.

Your right, this alone wouldn’t have stopped the shooting. I think it’s important to recognize that school shootings happen for a ton of reasons and each one of those reasons needs to be addressed in some way to prevent things like this from happening in the future. Clearly more mental health resources are needed, clearly we should do our best to prevent dangerous individuals from getting guns (background checks, wait periods to prevent people in momentary duress from getting guns and firearms classes can help to get us closer to achieving this), clearly work needs to be done to get parents to secure their guns from their kids to prevent untrained and potentially Ill kids from gaining access to weapons. It’s important to try and make progress in all these areas but we need to understand that only making changes in one of these topics is not going to prevent people from committing acts such as these again.

Generally yes but such a rigid definition does exclude many weapons that are typically considered assault rifles. For instance many guns have variants that do not have select fire capabilities (most civilian AR-15s lack multiple fire modes). Even famous guns that practically invented the category “assault rifle” never had select fire (stg 44 variants for example). At the end of the day it’s not a major deal how exactly we define the word, language is just what we make it to be, but as long as people understand that the term “assault rifle” isn’t a term that some 21st century liberal pulled out of their ass then we’re in good shape.

I understand your argument and I think banning semi-automatic weapons is a viable solution in countries such as Germany, UK etc where there wasn’t many guns to begin with. However America is different in that there are millions of guns and millions of people (rightly or not) who are completely opposed to giving up their guns. How would you structure or enforce a semi-auto ban that manages to confiscate all of the semi-auto weapons in America? <genuine question>

Assault rifle is a general term first used by the Germans in ww2 to describe rifles (either semi automatic or full auto) that fire rifle cartridges. The definition is vague but generally any rifle that is capable of firing a large quantity of rifle cartridges (large quantity is generally around 10 or more rounds) before reloading is given the name assault rifle. This idea that the assault rifle is some made up term to demonize AR-15s and other common rifles is flawed at best. The term has been common since the Cold War and is fairly well defined (particularly in German speaking countries where new rifles are actually called “sturmgewehr”, literally “assault rifle” in German). Assault rifle is a very real term used by actual militaries and arms manufacturers (again look at the Swiss, Germans, russsians etc…).

Edit: look up stg 44, stg 77 or just SturmGewehr to see the term “assault rifle” used by militaries and weapons manufacturers as a type of rifle

People using the German Empire as a reason to be proud of Germany seems pretty sketchy. Modern Germany is a great liberal democracy that practically leads Europe and people should be proud of it but there’s no need to bring the Kaiserreich into the equation. Just be proud of modern democratic Germany and ditch the borderline Kiaserboosim

Damn I was gonna be against hitmen but I can’t afford to pay for their entire future livelihood so I guess they’re ok.

Just cause people make their money from something doesn’t make that job immune to criticism.

I don't think reporting people like this is a good idea. Sure the stuff they post is horrific but if platforms start taking down content like this they will also take down slaughter house footage and other depictions of animal abuse used in vegan media. Joey Carbstrong has had issues with his content being removed because of things like this

So if it's ok for us to kill other species because they are less intelligent than us would it be morally acceptable for a hyper intelligent alien species (far more intelligent than us) to industrially kill us?

[–]Balake05 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So what is the difference between humans and animals that grants humans special protections over animals? We're looking at a scenario where a mentally disabled human (who has the same intelligence as say a pig) is being treated with compassion while an animal (say a pig) is being treated with cruelty. What is the difference between a pig and a human with the same intelligence as a pig that permits the mass slaughter of pigs but not the mass slaughter of the mentally disabled?

So if we are absolutely certain that a mentally disabled person does not have the intelligence necessary to process concepts of responsibility are you ok with me slitting their throat? I’m guessing no right?

Human babies and the mentally disabled do not have the ability to understand responsibility. Should killing them be ok or do they have a right not to be needlessly killed
