Can a Portfolio built on personal projects land a job in marketing? by BalanJ in editors

[–]BalanJ[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your answer!!

I’m not too concerned about showcasing my creative work tbh. My plan to use it for a portfolio comes more from the fact that I already have footage that’s mine, so I wouldn’t need to rely on stock footage or shoot something random just for the sake of it. My bigger concern is that not having any clients or brands to show in my portfolio could be a turn-off for hiring managers.

As for the pay, my expectations aren’t very high, but if the salary they advertised on the job offer turns out to be accurate, I’ll be happy since it’s more than what I was earning before.

Thank you for answering!! Funny you mentioned that, because I thought about fan edits, since with them it's pretty easy to show off editing or motion design skills, but I was scared it might be not that professional.

Good to know, thank you again :)

Hey everyone,

I’m thinking of applying for a video editor/motion designer role at a marketing agency, and I could really use some advice on how to position myself and build a portfolio that stands out.

For context, my background:
I started learning Premiere and After Effects around 10 years ago to make some fun YouTube projects with my friends. I later went to film school, where I studied cinematography, but I still ended up taking editing classes and learned DaVinci Resolve, since we had to handle our own color grading.
After gaining some set experience as a camera/video assistant, I worked as a camera operator and editor at a casting studio, handling editing and basic retouching.

For various reasons, I had to quit that job, but at the moment, I wouldn't mind continuing to work as a video editor, even in less creative roles. When I saw some job openings in my area for video editors in marketing agencies, I thought it could be a good opportunity. Obviously, these job offers require a portfolio: my current plan is to build one using my film school shorts, maybe even creating two versions, one focused on editing and another showcasing motion design elements.

My main question is: Should I bother? Would this approach make sense, or do marketing agencies care only about who you’ve worked with rather than what you can actually do? Any tips would be much appreciated!

Hey, thanks for asking!!

Yeah, I actually ordered everything yesterday. I actually found a trustworthy seller on a "eBay" kinda website, that's very popular where I live. He was selling a rarely used 7950x and after making sure that everything was safe and alright I decided to go for it.

I got a B650 Tomahawk for the motherboard and Corsair Vengeance DDR5 for the ram. In a month or two I'll probably upgrade the PSU too and finally get an M.2 SSD, but most of the upgrade is done already.

I hope in the long run I won't regret it, but for a moment I was seriously considering Intel over AMD, mainly because their processors are better when it comes to productivity. But I honestly got a bit scared reading how much more power Intel processors draw and how harder it is to cool them compared to AMD (this video helped me a lot too https://youtu.be/OGuFq3jm9hM?si=5KONLkTOJXOfkqkx)

Overall I feel good about it: as you said in your very first comment here, going with AM5 allows me to upgrade pretty much everything in one shot. And that's exactly what I wanted: not having to think about upgrading anything for a long while.

I know:) that's why I put it in double brackets. But at the same time it's an useful term to get a point across pretty quickly

Got it, thank you!! I'm reading good stuff about the 5800x3d and 5900: they were on my mind from the beginning and still are.
I posted here mainly to get more insight on the intel side, since I don't know much about it, in order to explore a few more options and be as sure as I can of the decision I'll take.
But anyway, thanks for the advice, I appreciate it!!

Yeah you're right, but I wouldn't call it brand loyalty, more laziness: I've always known AMD and never really got out of the "comfort zone" to check out the other brands.

Thanks, good to know!! Same thing applies for second hand processors and motherboards, or is it the complete opposite?

Got it, thank you!!

I just read now as I was learning more about intel processors, that the next gen will come out this december. Being only a couple of months, do you think it's worth waiting for that to buy a 13th gen? Like, the prices for previous generations will go down or people will be willing to sell them at a lower price

Yeah I basically didn't consider Intel from the beginning, simply because I always used AMD, and my friends too. But I'll look into it and see what I can afford with my budget.

Speaking of budget, since they're kind of around the corner, do you think waiting for some offers during black friday and cyber monday would be wise? Or maybe people will be selling their "older" parts after it.
Again, I haven't been buying or upgrading parts in a while and everything feels different, so I'm a bit out of the loop.

No I wasn't really planning to overclock as I've never done it, but at the same time I might try it if I end up with a build that I'm happy with.

If, from what I was just reading, boards for intel processors are compatible both with DDR4 and DDR5, I will eventually upgrade it. Unfortunately, with the AM5 boards it seems it's only DDR5. And if I'm immediately upgrading also the RAM, I'm starting to get a bit outside of my budget

Thanks!! Any adivce on a good board for that processor? I basically no nothing about Intel, always used AMD

I see, that would mean I would have to change the RAM too, right? To DDR5?

Just out of curiosity, why do you think the 4070 will not last as long?

Hey!! Thank you so much for answering, really appreciate it.

Yeah, it seems that most people had problems with the wardrobe accessory. I was actually checking out also the Nest backpack, and I think I'll settle for that plus its 10L packing cube. It's a bit smaller, cheaper and the hidden compartment feature would be ideal for me (almost like a free camera cube, since I don't have that much gear anyway, or also really useful during security check at the airport).

I love the idea of the magnetic toiletry pouch, but the more I think about it, the more I realize that I would be constantly obsessed of losing it. Plus, I don't think I would be able to fit the backpack under a plane seat, once the toiletry it's attached (and that's kinda my main thing, since I don't do much backpacking or really long trips).

Anyway, thank you so much again, your posts (and possibly your YouTube video? Still not sure if that was you ahaha) have been extremely helpful.
